Feel gool escapism at its finest
18 February 2023
This film is very old fashioned in the sense that it doesn't try to be edgy and different, but in a world of edgy movies it ends up feeling original and refreshing. Like the grand movies of the 40s and 50s, the sets are immaculate, the actors are beautiful and talented. The music was especially great!

It's full of all-American clichés and American values, it's over the top but it works, exactly because of that! In a way, it's less of a love story and more of a political statement, a long-form advert for conservatism. It made me think of the America we saw and admired from afar back in the 90s, the land of promise and integration despite differences. The American dream might be dead, but this movie lets you forget it and escape in a world where it is still exists.

I loved it... but could have ended up hating it just as well

I saw this movie at the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival, and I loved it!

In retrospect, I could have ended up hating it just as well!

Shinboru is a very odd situational comedy. It's silly yet artsy, thoughtful in parts, anarchic in its delivery and overall nuts. To this day, I have no idea what it was about, its meaning, what it's meant to *symbolize*.

I enjoyed it immensely, though, and found it especially hilarious with the geeky festival crowd commenting irreverently at the screen. It might not be as fun if you're watching it alone in your living room.
