Inside Man (II) (2022)
4/10
Predictable nonsense
19 June 2023
This doesn't know if it wants to be funny, like Inside Number Nine, or clever and chilling like Silence of The Lambs.

It's a preditable story with a poorly constructed plot, charactwra who make ridiculous lifw-changing decisions on a whim, and seems to be nothing more than an excuse for David Tennant to do some serious emoting in the hope of winning a Bafta or something.

You could have scrapped the entire American plot and it ends practically begging for a second season which I hope it does not get.

Do yourself a favour and watch something, anything, better. This will just irritate you, as it did me.

A fantastic way to 'end' the GOTG trilogy
3 May 2023
No spoilers from me, but this was a great movie and had a fantastic fight scene towards the end that needs repeated viewing.

All theee GOTG movies have had humour and heart with great music and this has made them stand out from the rest of the MCU.

There are some surprises, and some things that you may see coming but will cheer for when they arrive anyway.

If you're a fan of the MCU and the Guardians in particular, you should try to see this movie on the big screen because it looks gorgeous and some of the set design and FX stand-out as better than anything yet seen in a Marvel movie.

Are there some problems with it?

Sure. Name a film without them (ok, Jaws, but name another).

However, if you're willing to go on the journey you'll have a great time.

It's ok
14 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was ok.

It didn't do anything particularly new or interesting but moved the story along to where it needed to go.

It dragged in places and felt a little bloated (check that runtime!) and the climatic battle scene of a bunch of people fighting a bunch of people is something we've seen before in the MCU... the Avatar trailer with blue people in water did not help.

I liked Namor; he was changed from the comics but it didn't lose any of his petulance (and he kept the winger ankles and little green shorts) but when the film's best character was a man making gorilla noises you have to wonder why the heroine of the film didn't come across as more likeable.

Still, it was entertaining enough and is a fun way to spend a couple of hours if you're an MCU fan.

A hilarious episode
13 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode will be badly rated by many people who would happily have joined in the She-Hulk hating Intelligencia from the show itself, when in fact it's one of the best things Marvel has done in the entire MCU.

Sure, some of the cg is still ropey but that doesn't matter when the tone, comedy, performances and meta-plot is done so well.

The ending has a surprise that I'll not spoil but I very much look forward to seeing how they explain and address that (seeing as they have bypassed a big plot from the Hulk comics to do it).

All in all, the show has been exactly what it wanted to be; a lawyer comedy that addresses all the internet anger and kicks it in the shin.

Loved it.

Breaking Bad: Ozymandias (2013)
Season 5, Episode 14
Impeccable
11 August 2022
This is the greatest 48 minutes of television ever produced.

That's it.

That's the review.

Five seasons lead up to the events of this episode which, in turn, speeds towards the conclusion over the remaining two installments.

TV may never get this good again.

The perfect ending
11 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There was no other way this show could end; Walter's family are provided for, Jesse gets away to freedom from both Mr White and this lifestyle, and Walter himself goes out on his own terms.

In my opinion, Breaking Bad is without doubt the greatest tv show ever made.

Wow. Just... wow.
10 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What else can I say?

Everything comes together after six seasons of character development to get us to the most stressful heart-in-mouth cliffhanger I can remember.

The acting across the board in this episode was phenomenal and Rhea Seehorn deserves every award going.

HURRY UP, FINAL EPISODE!!

Prey (I) (2022)

As always, ignore ratings less than five or more than eight
6 August 2022
Prey, the latest in the Predator franchise, is good.

It's funny in places, has some great action scenes, and everything is very lean; everything moves forward. There is no filler or padding here.

If you don't mind the actors speaking with modern accents (because otherwise they'd have probably made terribly offensive aproximations of Native American accents that went out of fashion in John Wayne cowboy films AND you can watch it in Comanche with subtitles if you prefer) it's an entertaining little action film.

A minor quibble is in the 'predator vision' because you'd have thought it would have changed a little between this film and the original given 300 years passed but we can forgive them that; it's a staple of these movies after all!

I've seen a lot of complaints about 'How can a GIRL defeat the predtor when armed marines couldn't?' They tend to forget that 1) this isn't the same predator, and 2) Arnie defeates the original by bashing it over the head with logs and a rock

There is a lot of toxic nonsense in the reviews for this film saying it's dreadful and, in turn, a lot of rabid fans saying it's the greatest film ever.

In truth, it's just a good little sci-fi action movie.

Not as good as the original, of course, but easily one of the top three Predator films.

One guy against dozens? Yay!
3 August 2022
I'm a sucker for the one-man-army action movie from the 80's and this, which is basically John Wick (and which in itself is one of those movies) is exactly that.

Funny, over-the-top and thoroughly entertaining, there is probably a Better Call Saul pun to be made but I'm not smart enough!

It's a great fun action movie; if that's your bag, go watch it!

A great episode that says everything about the character of Saul
29 July 2022
After everything he went through, from BCS to BB, this flash forward episode shows that the character is and always will be that character - he can't help himself.

I thought it was a fantastic episode; tense, funny and brilliantly constructed and written.

I'm just sad that we're nearing the end of our time in the world.

More of the same, but done with style
2 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was as good a final episode to the season as we could expect; everyone had their moment to shine and Eleven found hidden reserves of power again.

However, my big issue?

Eddie's death was pointless.

His actions had no effect and he could have just remained in the trailer with Dustin instead of sacrificing himself.

Ah well.

I'm glad season five will be the final one.

Started as just ok, turned into bad pantomime
9 June 2022
This show had potential but after the first season it just got more and more silly and much less interesting.

The most recent seasons have been almost unwatchable (and I've only watched them just because by that point I'd committed myself to see this nonsense through to the end).

Watch season one and two and ignore the rest.

Ignore ratings either side of a six or seven.
27 May 2022
All the 1 to 3 star reviews are by entitled idiots (don't get me started on anyone who uses the word 'woke' about anything that gives a woman a speaking role).

All the 9 to 10 star reviews are by the rabid fans who would rate anything SW highly.

The first two episodes are fun and lead into a humdinger of a cliff hanger.

Ewan is Obi Wan.

Young Leia is the right side of bratty and shows how that character trait would turn into the Leia we know.

The fx are a bit shoddy at times and they don't like to explain what planet scenes are taking place on.

As a show, it is entertaining.

As a Star Wars show, it fills a gap between the shiny prequels and the more lived-in originals.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the full series turns out.

Big Boys (2022– )

First episode review
26 May 2022
Big Boys is about a shy kid going to uni and although it has (somewhat-typical for recent Channel Four comedy) Inbetweeners-style humour it has a bit more heart to it than that show and the two leads are allowed to both lean into the silly bawdy humour and yet still be emotionally honest and plausibly genuine.

I enjoyed episode one a lot and will look forward to binging the rest.

Astonishing
25 May 2022
Once again, they have written an astonishing piece of fiction that hits many bases and somehow only takes thirty minutes.

As always, darkly funny and both moving and thought-provoking with an ending that slams into the viewer unexpectedly.

Pemberton and. Shearsmith are national treasures, up there with Shakespeare and. Pinter.

A fun adventure movie
19 November 2021
This film is the slightly backwards love child of an afternoon tryst between Indiana Jones and the Fast and Furious and is a perfectly adequate fun brainless adventure movie.

That about covers it.

It's an enjoyable show, looking back at tales from Dwayne Johnson's life.

Some of the casting choices are spot-on for their real-life counterparts.

A fun 80's action movie
30 August 2021
Taking cues from Batman and Tarzan, and throwing in a little of The Warriors for good measure and then sprinkling a bit of The Crow on top, this is a thoroughly enjoyable vigilante fable set in a barely recognsible to modern eyes New York.

This is not Discworld.
27 August 2021
As a Discworld show, it was just wrong on so very many levels.

From writing to the set designs to the acting, it was all just awfully far away from the characters it was based on.

However, as a show, removed from Discworld, it was... watchable.

I watched it through that lense; ignored the Discworld connection and just tried to see if it was a good steampunk fantasy sci-fi show since we don't get many of those made for British tv.

As I said, it was watchable.

Nothing more.

It was NOT Discworld.

What If...? (2021– )

A great start to the new What If? series
11 August 2021
Firstly, ignore the negative reviews.

This is a great first episode, full of action and comedic beats that fits perfectly into the MCU yet still gives a great introduction, along with the Loki tv show, to the multiverse idea and acts as a warm-up for the new direction the MCU will take.

The voice acting is phenomenal and the old cast mixes well with the replacement voices. Once again, Ross Marquand excells.

I enjoyed it
31 July 2021
I am in two minds about this film.

On one hand, I really did enjoyed it well enough.

However, I'm in no rush to see it again and it was rather... dull... in places.

Not something I thought I'd ever say about a James Gunn movie.

The beginning is great fun, and I don't know where else they can take the Harley chatacter after this (other than maybe a prequel?), and there are plenty of funny moments with some great action beats.

It just felt a little... I don't know.

Maybe because Gunn was clearly let off the leash he didn't have to restrain himself and so moments that may have been handled with more care were allowed to simply explode?

There is a lot of blood and gore, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

As I said, I enjoyed it, and I will watch it again someday, I'm just in no big rush to revisit it.

A generous seven out of ten.

I've read the Suicide Squad and DC comics for a very long time, and all the low reviews with the 'restore the Snyderverse' hashtag can go away.

Time travel shenanigans
9 July 2021
As with all time travel movies, none of this makes sense BUT they do a good job of keeping it within the science of the movie itself and there are some great performances from Chris Pratt (when isn't he watchable?) and JK Simmons.

In every episode there are at least two moments that make me roll my eyes at the ridiculous behaviour of characters BUT this show is still entertaining and we looked forward to every episode, because it did keep you hanging on to see the outcome. Give it a try!
