Stupid excuse to make an epic film
19 March 2008
Basically this movie has a plot typical a romance epic genre. But I don't care much about the story. My only reason watching this flick is because Donnie Yen. The direction seriously damaged by lack of exploration by the filmmaker. This is not movie quality direction rather much like a TV series quality. Very disappointing. The pace is inconsistent, the romantic scenes very immature and lame, there no intensity on the battle scenes at all. The characterization on the bad guys very cheaply done. It's like they are yelling at the audience, "I'm the bad guy, look at my evil expressions, very bad ain't it". Overall this flick is very disappointing. 4/10

Banyu Biru (2005)

A surreal film that critics hated.
17 April 2006
Banyu Biru is the most underrated film because the film critics in Indonesia are narrow minded towards the art and surreal film.

Banyu Biru is a surreal-road movie about Banyu who (Tora) is looking for answer from his father (Slamet Raharjo). Tora Surido is playing a completely different role this time as Banyu. Tora seems don't understand about the role. Most of the time in the movie, we can see, that Tora seems don't know what he is doing. From "the making of" he does admitted that a day before the shoot, he still not able to find Banyu's character. Well, if we judge it from the movie, he never get the character. But for some reason it doesn't matter, in fact it helps the movie a lot since Banyu is "why do I live like this" kind of person.

The movie was very short for a feature film, only 70 minutes. Maybe this is one of the reason why people dislike it. But Banyu Biru still is a good movie because of it's very different compare to other Indonesia movie that were trapped in the world of teen and horror movies.

excellent intro, bad middle and end.
17 April 2006
Janji Joni is Joko Anwar first movie as director. He was known as movie critics who is famous for his bitchy comments. So, let see how well this "great" movie reviewer did his role as a film director.

The movie is about Joni who is a film reel delivery man. Since many cinemas in that town shares the reel, so they'd need a delivery man to pass them the reel on time so the movie can play till it finish, and that is Joni's job. The problem starts when he made promises to a woman that he will deliver the reel of the film that she want to watch on time. But this time isn't as easy as he thought, because he is trapped at "the wrong time and the wrong place" moment.

This movie was interesting in term of concept. Too bad it doesn't have good sub-plots to support it. At the first half of the movie, it start like the best Indonesian movie but the second half of it become less and less interesting and all over the place.

Swordsplay epic from Thailand
8 June 2004
I watched Suriyothai and Bang Rajan before and now I'm looking forward to see this film. Suriyothai was good while Bang Rajan was below average, so let see how was Khunsuk, shall we?

Khunsuk or Sema The Warrior of Ayudthaya is an epic film with a lot of sword fighting. But the problem was the sword was too big for them and to make things worst, they fights with 2 huge swords. The action lacks of impact and tension. The swords were too heavy and they hardly move.

As for the story, well...it something that we already heard before. A low class soldier falls in love with a higher class girl who suppose to marry an ambitious sergeant. The sergeant p*** off and want to destroy him and his family.

This movie is so bad, even Bang Rajan is much better that this. The direction was awful. Seriously, it was painful to watch.

Avoid! 2/10

Troy (2004)
Just watch the duel b/w Hector and Achilles then u can forget the rest of the movie...
22 May 2004
This movie is just another mediocre epic summer blockbuster. Brad Pitt was miss cast as Achilles. He is not a good actor for this type of role. Eric Bana did quite well as Hector though but not enough to save the movie. The duel b/w Hector and Achilles was nice. It was the best duel since 'Rob Roy'. It was brutal and realistic. But there also some 'kung fu style stance' for Mr. Pitt. And with some dynamic camera work, Mr. Pitt looks cool in this duel. Some people will think Pitt did a good job in this movie only because he was cool during the duel. As for the battle scene (the most important element for epic adventure), it was disappointing. The Last Samurai has away better battle scene than this.

Bad Acting
8 November 2003
Bad acting. That was the first thing that i noticed. Even Nicholas Lee looks very amateur in this movie. Maybe it was because the language. Many of the singapore actors/actresses has some problems acting with english. They more comfortable to speak chinese or 'singlish', because I see they acted better in those languages. The story was interesting enough but it was ruined by poor acting. Some of the jokes are very lame and looks really stupid. Overall I was very, very disappointed. 5/10

If you want to see a better film from s'pore, watch "15" instead.

"Not so" Amazing Spider-Man
26 October 2003
The first half of the movie was very good. Why? Because Amazing Fantasy #15 was one of the greatest stories from a comic book and the movie adapted it very well. The other half of it was just as standard as other (comic book) movies . This is a bad sign for the next movie!
