Fallout (2024)
This is what the standard should be
First of all, huge fan of the Fallout series. I was worried that the show wasn't going to be all that. This is exactly how a show based off a video game should be made. This is the best tv/movie based off a video game yet. Last of Us was good, but this whole show has been phenomenal from start to end. The attention to detal is fantastic. Hats off to everyone involved in making this. My girlfriend has never played, and has never heard of Fallout. The show does a great job in captivating audiences that know nothing about the franchise.
I love that they use music used in the games and for trailers for the games. I love everything about this show.
Billions (2016)
Stellar show
I started watching this show when it was still airing, and impatiently waited for the show to end so I could binge it all. I binged it entirely way too fast.
The first 4-5 season are some of the best tv you watch. The cat and mouse, the back and forth, and the intensity is fantastic. This is phenomenal television
It does start to fall off during seasons 6-7. Season 4 and 5 you can actually see how things are about to enfold, but you don't hate it because it's executed so well.
Seasons 6 and 7 almost feel like they transitioned to a "weekly conquest" show where every episode was a new challenge for them. I don't like those shows too much. Prefer the shows that has challenges lasting episodes or entire seasons, and you notice the difference like right away.
Still a fantastic show and I'd watch it again.
Obliterated (2023)
Hangover, meets 24, meets Futureman
Title seems weird right? Well it's the best way I can describe it. It's set in Vegas, they're all trashed off their ass, and they have a limited time to save the city from a nuke. Only they can save the city. Sounds familiar? Hangover meets 24. It has the humor and acting of Futureman. If you've watched Futureman, it was entertaining, but the acting was quite over the top and the humor seems entirely forced.
It's entertaining. I haven't finished it, I have 2 episodes left. It's not meant to be taken seriously. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I honestly thought it was a movie and threw it on one night for something mindless to watch and now I feel like I have the need to finish it because I got a few episodes in.
Foundation (2021)
I tried
I'm going to start off by saying I never read the books. I don't know the source material. I came in blind based off a recommendation that I'd enjoy it due to my love for The Expanse. First episode is really slow, brings you in at the very end but still felt like it wasn't enough to get me immersed into the show. After dedicating almost 6 episodes of watching, I can say that this isn't for me. Takes elements of Dune, Star Wars, and Bladerunner and basically brings them all together. Sometimes it feels like you're watching Galdiator. It may seem like it's the perfect watch, but it's far from that. I thought I was getting myself into a brilliant sci-fi with how many times this show has been recommended, but I've failed to find that 6 episodes in. I know it's hard to base a series off a few episodes, and a lot of great series start slow, but this isn't for me.
The Expanse (2015)
Best Sci Fi show I've watched
This show is fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. It starts off very slow because there's a lot to set up and develop. Probably took me like 4-5 tries to start it because the first few episodes make it difficult to draw you in. Once you stick with it, about half way through the first season and you'll get hooked. Seasons 2 and 3 were very strong and incredibly fun to watch. Amazon took over for seasons 4-6. I will admit, I had to pause and take a break during season 4. It was just so dramatically different from what the first few seasons were, but it was still entertaining. I was hesitant to dive into season 5, but I'd rate 5 up there with seasons 2 and 3. I did enjoy season 6, but everything felt so forced and rushed, trying to squeeze a grand finale in a 6 episode season. With that being said, I wish there were more shows like this. I can be very particular and overly critical on shows, especially sci-fi. Most shows in the genre have poor acting or really bad cgi, which often destroys a great concept. This show should be a staple for all sci-fi fans and set the bar really high for other shows in the genre.
Upgrade (2018)
I can't give half points so I rounded up.
My grade would be a 6.6/6.7 if I could give partial grades.
I went to Reddit looking for a cyber punk style movie and this was the most recommended (it is not close to that style). The movie has a great concept and has Terminator/Bladerunner feels at times, but the movie ultimately falls short with poor acting, and a very poor script in which you can see further into the future than the characters themselves. The movie has key points that just doesn't make sense, making you wonder if they struggled putting parts together or the writing was just that lazy. The only think holding this thing up was the concept. It's not a bad movie, but it's far from being what it's been hyped up to be. It's not a film I'd ever consider watching again.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
This movie is fantastic!
Ignore the Mario gatekeepers and negative Nancy reviews. The movie was fantastic. Such a fun experience all around. Plot lacked, but so does every Mario game if you're getting into the specifics. It was still an overall fun experience for old and new fans of the franchise/universe.
The Easter Eggs are everywhere. Jump man, DK country, Mario kart (rainbow road shortcut as well), Smash Bros..
I was worried about the voice acting going into it, but after watching I couldn't imagine anyone else doing those roles.
Make sure you wait through the credits, there are two extra scenes. One of them hinting at a possible sequel.
Full Swing (2023)
Not as advertised
It was advertised as a behind the scenes look into last season of the PGA tour, rather, each episode tends to follow one or two golfers on their biggest moment/moments in the year. I'm a big fan of golf, and I think LIV is good for the sport. It's allowing these professionals to act like what they are, independent contractors. If you're looking for what the PGA Tour advertised this would be, you'll be disappointed. Seems like a smear campaign to dog on those who left the tour. Brooks' body breaking down and not being the threat he used to, portraying Poulter as a selfish has been when the guy just wants to make sure his family is set up and that he can have more time with them. They try to highlight the glory and legacy of being on the PGA Tour, but it's often lost while trying to trash LIV. My biggest gripe with the PGA tour was that they own the professional's likeness. They can't post anything they do on tour, and they come out with this high and mighty mentality against LIV when some of the smaller tour affiliates and sponsors have accepted Saudi money as well.
I haven't finished the series. It's tough to finish. They did have a fun insight into Joel Dahmen's journey with the US Open and that was a fun underdog story to watch. Other than that, it's been false advertising.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
I have no idea why this episode is rated so low
This episode was phenomenal. The writing, beautiful, the story, beautiful. My only guess is that those that played the game didn't like that the story deviated. As someone who played the game, this story is incredible. Light in the darkness. It's emotionally charged.
Gives great backstory, gives insight into how this pandemic happened and spread, and is a great filler leading into this huge journey these two are going on. I heard great things about this episode, and it didn't disappoint in the slightest. Tugged on my heart strings. I'm probably going to watch it again tonight. This story on its own would win awards if it were a movie.
White Noise (2022)
Doesn't make sense.
It's all over the place. The first 30 minutes it sets up one thing, once the second chapter starts, it's almost trying to be a knock off Stranger Things. And then once you think it's going to be this post apocalyptic adventure, it jumps right back into the the original build up, like a hole hour of the movie didn't matter. The dialogue is hard to follow at times. I assumed that being top 10 trending on Netflix for a few weeks now would mean it's a decent movie, and now I just assume everyone is in the same position I am in, watching to find out why it's being shoved in our faces every time we log onto the app.
Spiderhead (2022)
Seems to be a trend on Netflix
Watched the trailer and saw the cast and I was immediately sold on watching it.
The thing that kept me watching was the concept. Unfortunately as you dive deeper and deeper into the movie, the quality of the movie deteriorates. The ending is god awful and the acting in the end is extremely terrible. The best moment was about 3/4 of the way in and then it spiraled out of control after.
It's getting 5 stars because of the concept and that 3/4 was decent.
Seems to be a trend with these Netflix movies. Grabs you in with the concept, seems like a decent movie and then turns out to be a painted turd.
The Most Hated Man on the Internet (2022)
A disgusting time for the internet
My friends told me this this was coming up. As someone who's nudes were also stolen (hacked), put on that website, and harassed through social media for months, the documentary did a very good job in recreating and showing the nightmare that many of us had to live through when he was up and going. People forget that back then, camera phones had limited memory. People also forget that early iPhones could only send media through email. There was no cloud and people stored photos in email.
IAU was all fun and games until you were on it. Your phone number, address, and social media linked. You were constantly flooded with messages to kill yourself.
Most people aren't familiar with how big this got.
Although I won't watch this again, I'd recommend this to watch so everyone can become familiar with one of the darkest times of the internet.
Changeland (2019)
Really wanted to like it
Browsing through Prime and came across this. Labeled as a comedy and Seth Green was directing/acting. Turned out to be a movie of two guys traveling Thailand. Nothing funny about it. Movie made me want to go to Thailand, that's about all I got from it.
StartUp (2016)
Binge worthy!
Fantastic show. Kept popping up on my Netflix, seemed interesting and I gave it a try. I couldn't stop watching. Great concept, great story. I can't believe only 3 seasons were made, or that Crackle picked this up. Loved it. Big fan. Highly recommend to all.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Really wanted to like this show.
Super hero show. Netflix. Thought I would enjoy it. But I caught myself only watching because I wanted to find out how they got their powers, and even that moment was lackluster.
The show has a lot of holes.
The acting.. absolutely atrocious. That and the awful writing and the whole show felt like I was watching a super hero soap opera.
Spoilers below so scroll at your own risk.
One of the stupidest moments in the show, when they finally get their own powers, the mysterious island disappears. The captain that took them on their voyage decides to try to turn the ship around, until they notice 6 people flying in the air, wearing their super hero costumes and capes... that they didn't have with them when they arrived. Plus they were transported to a different planet to obtain their powers. So we're to assume that when they obtained their powers, they automatically got put into their costumes and magically arrived back at the location after the island disappeared?
The best episode was the 8th episode, leaving a massive cliffhanger for the next season, if there is even one. If there is, I won't be watching.
