My Chemical Romance: The Black Parade Is Dead! (2008)
"The Black Parade is DEAD!!!!"
My Chemical Romance is my favourite band, and always will be. They sound just as good live as they do on the albums, and this concert is perfect. They know how to put on a good show, and how to give the audience a good time. It was filmed in Mexico, and I wish I'd been there. The band is spectacular and exceeded my expectations. Ray and Frankie play guitar amazingly as usual, and the now-departed Bob kills it on the drums (miss you Bob!). And Gerard is outstanding. His voice is so powerful and emotional, it just pulls the whole thing together. They also all look stunning in their black parade outfits, especially Gerard ;) The show is entertaining and theatrical to watch, and I'm very pleased I decided to buy it. 10/10 concert footage.
Great Expectations (2011)
Brilliant adaptation
Personally, this programme made my Christmas much better. I watched it with my family and it was just the kind of thing that was suitable for everyone. The actors were excellent, Gillian Anderson giving a very creepy yet sympathetic performance of Miss Havisham, and Harry Lloyd was pitched perfectly as the eccentric and loyal Herbert Pocket. Ray Winstone and Shaun Dooley were also heart breaking as the convict Magwitch and Pips kind brother-in-law Joe Gargery. But the person that stood out to me most was Douglas Booth as Pip. I'd only seen him before in Burberry magazines, and he is admittedly gorgeous and I'm now a fan :) but his acting ability far exceeded my expectations,he was very convincing and proved he is more than just a pretty- well, STUNNING face! The one thing that bothered me was Vanessa Kirby as Estella. It wasn't that she was bad, she just wasn't as good as everyone else. She's also supposed to be absolutely beautiful, but next to Douglas Booth she just looked plain and uninteresting, which isn't necessarily her fault. The scenery and setting were great, the young Pip and Estella were magical, and the whole thing was flawless, exceptional. There should have been more episodes because I felt very sad when it finished. Definitely recommended.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
Utterly haunting
I saw this film on YouTube yesterday, and it's not left my mind since. It certainly gives you a lot to think about. The acting was one of the best things in the film. The main boy Bruno is played by Asa Butterfield who gave a spectacularly innocent performance. I recently saw him in Hugo and he didn't disappoint in that either. He is a truly talented actor and I'm sure we'll see more of him in the future. The other little boy was very good too, and David Thwelis was utterly repulsive as the Nazi officer. I won't go into the story or the ending because I think everyone knows what happens but if you don't, then watch this movie. It was really good, though devastatingly sad, and I wouldn't recommend it for young children. I'm 14, and I've studied the Holocaust but I was in pieces. If you don't cry then there's something wrong with you. 8/10
Hugo (2011)
Best Film Of 2011
After seeing the trailers, reading positive reviews and acknowledging the hype, I had high expectations for 'Hugo'. I wasn't disappointed. Martin Scorsese has truly made a masterpiece, and I was thoroughly impressed and delighted by it. Everything about it is just perfect. The subtle understated story, the jaw-dropping setting and special effects are wonderful. The film is the most visually appealing I've seen in a long time. But the best thing by far is the acting. Asa Butterfield (Hugo) is destined to be a star. His performance was extraordinary, as he had to portray many different emotions and every one of them was convincing. The most memorable thing about him are his eyes, as they are so deep and soulful, and really got to me in the sad parts of the film. He was very appealing as Hugo, and I'm sure we will see more of him in the future. Chloe Moretz (Isabelle) was good as well, although her accent faltered slightly, and there were moments where she was a bit OTT. But she complimented Asa nicely as the companion. Ben Kingsley was very touching as the unappreciated film maker, and Sascha Baron Cohen gave a good comedic turn as the station master, though he was a bit scary in parts. I really liked the little clips of old films as well, because this gave the movie a nostalgic feel. One of the only problems I have is the fact it's made out to be a kids film, and I think it's too long for a child to sit through comfortably. In a way it starts off as a child's movie, what with the chase and everything. But then it descends into a more interesting and mature plot in the second half, and this was the point where I was satisfied my 3D ticket had been well worth the price. Best film of 2011; go see it.
Green Day: Awesome as F**K (2011)
The title says it all
I have recently become a fan of Green Day since purchasing American Idiot. I bought this CD/DVD set, and I love it!! Green Day are amazing, and quite simply, don't watch this if you don't like them. However, I think they're incredible, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the live concert footage from Japan. They play some of their most popular songs, such as Holiday, East Jesus Nowhere and Know Your Enemy, but also surprise us with a few old classics from earlier albums. They work the crowd so well, and you just want to go and see them live so bad when you watch this! Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt rocked the drums and bass as usual, and Billie Joe is so sexy! (and a great singer and guitarist as well). 10/10, outstanding.
Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Outstanding, but get the tissues ready!
We are studying Romeo and Juliet in English, and we had to watch and compare this version to the 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. I own the 1996 version because I am a huge Leo fan, but I must admit this version is much better. The best things about this film are the two outstanding teenage leads, expertly picked by Zeffirelli. 17-year-old Leonard Whiting is convincing and emotional as Romeo, not to mention very good looking, and 15-year old Olivia Hussey positively shines as the vulnerable Juliet. They have amazing chemistry and are really believable as the tragic star-crossed lovers. In the 1996 version, Leo is very very good as Romeo, but Claire Danes is underwhelming and the role is unsuited to her. However in this version the romance truly seems real and not wooden, and their portrayal of the doomed couple is out of this world. The other aspects of the film are excellent as well, such as the scenery, setting and costumes which stay true to Shakespeares original play. The supporting cast are brilliant, with Michael York as a chilling Tybalt, and a comedic turn from Pat Heywood as the nurse. In conclusion, this is a classic, and you must see it. Have your tissues ready for the end, you will need them.
Inception (2010)
Excellent film, a must see!
Firstly, I'll admit that I only went to see this because 1. Leo DiCaprio is in it, and I have a VERY soft spot for him :) and 2. My brother also wanted to see it. So I went along, expecting some nice Leo eye-candy and gun fights. Nothing more.
This film was AMAZING! I absolutely loved it. It had everything in it: outstanding acting, an excellent score, mind blowing special effects and a very intricate, detailed plot. There was exactly the right balance of drama/Leo and action/guns , making it an ideal film for either gender. The film was so clever, and I was absolutely glued to the screen the whole time. I was overwhelmed, because it was so much better than what I was expecting. In my opinion, this film is very underrated, and I believe that it is by far the best film of the decade, maybe even the century. The only bad thing that is if you're slow like me, you may need to watch it a few times to fully understand the plot, but I'm not complaining. I was also very disappointed that this didn't make the number 1 or 2 spot on the IMDb top 250, because it should be there. Absolutely.
So if you haven't seen it, make it your top priority, because this film is definitely a classic :)
Titanic (1997)
AMAZING!!! A must see!!!!
'Titanic' is my favourite film for many reasons. 1. It has Leo DiCaprio (hottie!)in it ;-D 2. It is one of the most romantic love stories ever made 3. It is the one of the only films that has ever made me laugh and cry. 4. It touches your heart more than you'd ever want to admit.
A lot of people dismiss this film, saying it's got rubbish acting, uninspired directing, overlong, whatever. I can guarantee that none of these things are true. Titanic truly is a masterpiece, a landmark in the history of film. I first saw this film last year. I'd heard about how good it was, but thought it might be a little disappointing. But honestly it was breathtaking. I won't say anymore, just go watch it. Watch. It. It is one of the best movies you will ever see. Maybe even the best. And be sure to watch it on it's re-release in 3-D in April 2012.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011)
Absolutely amazing, ignore the bad reviews!
Just before I start, I admit I am a belieber, and I'm proud of it too! Firstly, I went to see this film when it came out in the cinema, and although I am a massive fan, I didn't expect it to be incredible. How wrong I was. It tells the story of Justin Bieber's rise to fame in a very interesting way, and shows just how incredible it is that he went from being a normal kid to a global superstar in a matter of a couple of years. This film is a down-to-earth, true story which inspires many people, and was filmed very well. Justin isn't everyone's favourite person, and a lot of people put him down to being an over-hyped, teen heartthrob. However, this film shows him in his true colours; he is a genuinely talented person who can play guitar, drums and piano extremely well, and also has a breathtaking voice. So for all you haters: if you don't like him, just don't see it. But if you're not sure, then just give this film a go, because even if you don't like him personally, please appreciate the fact that he is a normal boy who made it big, and has extraordinary talent. Love you Justin, you're incredible and just keep doing what you're doing. Never Say Never ;-D
Outnumbered (2007)
Brilliant programme, don't miss it!
Ignore all the bad reviews, because 'Outnumbered' is amazing. It's so funny and realistic, and there's nothing I can fault it for, except the BBC never make enough episodes, and maybe series 4 hasn't been quite up to the same standard. Everything is exceptional, but the best thing by far are the children. Karen (Ramona Marquez) manages to be amusing, annoying and sweet all at once, Ben (Daniel Roche) is so mad and hilarious, and Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey) is very funny and sarcastic, and very good looking! So definitely don't overlook this brilliant programme, because there really is nothing like it. You won't be disappointed :-)
