The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
To watch this movie for the first time, at the theater, and completely alone...
When I was about 20 years old (two decades ago now), zapping one night, I came across "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I stopped for a few minutes, just to watch one of the most brutal scenes in the movie. I switched the channel. I watch more than 200 movies a year and a lot of them are horror movies. Of all times, of all nationalities... but I had not seen "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" until today. It's been on the big screen, and on top of that... completely alone in the theater. An authentic luxury and a whole experience. It took me too long to see it, but maybe because this was the way and the moment I had to watch it. I don't fit in my enthusiasm...
Nanfang chezhan de juhui (2019)
Gem? A gem of garbage is what this movie is.
I watch a movie every two days. That is, I watch about 180 movies a year. I watch movies from almost every country in the world. I watch movies from Korea, from Spain, from Iran, from Russia, from Chile, from France, from the United States, from Romania, from Greece, from Philippines... I watch mute movies and superhero movies. I love from Tarkovsky's "Stalker" to "Guardians of the Galaxy". And I have to say that "The Wild Goose Lake" is one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
It is extremily boring, disjoint and long. Do not think you guys that I don't like long movies: My favourite movie of 2019 is "La Flor", an argentinian movie that lasts more than...17 hours! But watching "The Wild Goose Lake" was for me like been there in front of the screen for years. Years and eons of doom in hell. Oh my god, have mercy with the foolish people like me who spend two hours of their lives watching this movie, packaged as a "visually stunning thriller", but empty and boring as hell...
The Lighthouse (2019)
Elevated Horror? A director's onanism.
Watching "The Lighthouse" you will watch several onanisms: Robert Pattinson's character onanisms and director's onanism: the movie itself.
Well crafted (nice photography and music), correct cinematography and well played by Pattinson and Dafoe, but soulless, boring and repetitive. This movie has the same problem than "Midsommar" and "Us", it is too self conscious, and the director likes himself a lot. All these films have great imagery, but you can't build a movie only with that. A good example: Mandy. A masterpiece with a fantastic imagery and with soul, a movie that leaves you with a deep impression and impact. If elevated horror are Eggers, Aster's Midsommar (Hereditary is great) and Peele, I will always be a prosaic horror guy.
The Bad Seed (1956)
Yes, the girl is impressive. But the script treat us like idiots...
Do you really like a movie where the screenwriter and the director explains you every action? What if, besides that explanations while the things are happening, there is another explanation before, for the same action? Two explanations. One before the action (they prepare your "stupid brain" for the things to come), and then the other one, so the numb mass that they think you have inside your head is capable of understanding things. That is what this movie does. And that is what makes this a really bad movie, with a bad script and a badly directed. We don't need that explanations because we aren't idiots. Besides, there are gestures and cinematographic language, there are enough cinematographic resources to make that explicit explanations unnecesary.
It is a shame, the little girl is really amazing (I rated the movie with two stars because of her acting) and the story had a lot of potential.
PS: the end credits are the height of preposterousness, the bad final joke. I can imagine the director saying: "oh my god, this movie, this end is too much for the audience. Let's introduce the characters, all of them smiling, just to let the people know that it was just a movie, that it wasn't real." And this bad joke starts with a voice saying to the audience "wait a minute!" and ends with a embarrassing spank...
Le regine (1970)
1h20m boring, good 7 last minutes. Is it worth it?
It coud have been a good short film, or an acceptable medium-length film, but it is one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.
Nothing happens in the movie before the last 7 minutes. There is no plot, no tension, no pace, no mood, it is not haunting, or trippy, or visually mesmerezing, or atmospheric. Nothing at all. And I am really into slow and long movies. I love low budget movies from the 70s, but I can not positively value a movie for having only a good final seven minutes.
Too Old to Die Young (2019)
A demolishing and terrifying criticism about the world we live in. And about what's ahead.
"Too Old to Die Young" is an horrific portrait of the 2019 human being. A devastating portrait of the political and social system where we live in. Ultra-violence, hedonism without frontiers, unleashed primal instincts, human moral values below zero, psychopathologies, alexithymia, the law of an eye for an eye...
It is about the sick global ecomomic and social order. That capitalism that has turned into wild neoliberalism which now is turning into a new form of fascism. That's what we have now: USA, Brazil, Italy... This system where the world has become a jungle, where (as Diana states at the end) only a few have everything and the rest have nothing.
The cinematography is amazing, and the music is one of the best Cliff Martinez's compositions. Characters and interpretations are superb. Amazing series... even though it leaves you bereaved and hopeless....
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
An experience that is much more than a surrealistic thriller.
Besides the obvious thriller-mystery-comedy style, I think this movie is more than that. It is about something that is explicitly mentioned: what if pop culture is just a vehicle to manipulate us, to alienate us, to keep us controlled and happy, not facing and fighting against the inequalities and the injustices? I think this movie is also about the present day youth, about the shallowness, about hedonism, about crazy conspiracy theories, about emptiness, about mythomania (yes, we all know that even rock stars are humans like we are, but we had never seen it so graphically, in such grotesque and so unpleasant way), about the rampant consume (Sam consumes girls. He "falls in love" with every girl he meets. He is not in love with Sarah, he is infatuated with her. Sarah is just a whim. He has to posses her, to consume her).
A lot of things in a surrealistic and hypnotic wrap.
Hereditary (2018)
How to screw up an almost perfect horror movie in the last minute.
Everything was going awesome. The acting. The ambience. The story. The music. Even the questionable horror orgy in the last ten minutes. -- SPOILERS-- But that final speech was absolutely unnecessary. What about to have shown how Peter goes up to the cabin in the tree, see what he sees and he is crowned without a single word of the worshippers? What about if we see that Peter's close- up and.... fade to black? It was all that we needed...
Midnight Special (2016)
Used to love Jeff Nichols...
I love "Mud". Great movie. I love more "Take Shelter". Amazing script. Amazing tone. I love even more "Shotgun Stories". Raw. Real. Genuine. But Jeff... seriously? What's this? A cheesy script. Some stills already seen in his previous movies. A predictable ending. A predictable everything. A big void. Plastic. Fake. Naive. The first 10 minutes are hopeful. Great music. A great but missed Sam Shepard. A missed but an unnecessary role. It appears only for a while (he is SAM SHEPARD for God's sake!!!) , only to justify the getaway. And then... the horror. Not even Michael Shannon deserves a good mention. Hope you will return to the path soon , Jeff!
