All of Us Strangers (2023)
Touching film that will bring you to tears
A seemingly low key film manages to leave you feeling very emotional and questioning your own relationships. The scenes with Adam's parents take you back to the 1980s (and reminded me of my childhood, and how things used to be for gay men in those days). The story is unusual but believable and more original than most.
The acting is excellent particularly Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal who deserve the highest awards, with super support from Claire Foy and Jamie Bell. The 1980s soundtrack is great and used effectively, especially to close the film.
If you don't leave the cinema feeling like you've been through the emotional wringer, then you've not watched it properly. This film leaves a mark.
Anne (2022)
Stunned
This account of the Hillsborough disaster and the impact on one family is devastating and stops you in your tracks from the start. Tragic and difficult to watch sometimes it is also inspirational and is therefore a must see.
Werewolves Within (2021)
Disappointing
Good title, idea and set up is let down by an odd, unfunny tone with no scares. The title promises more so this left me feeling disappointed unfortunately. Perhaps it can be remade with added horror, comic turns and good werewolf effects?
The Rental (2020)
Solid film
This is a good horror/thriller which kept me entertained to the very end. It uses a trusted formula and has decent performances that help create the tension. Makes you think twice about holiday homes!
The Invisible Man (2020)
On the edge of your seat...
This film was so intense to watch that it feels like you are living the same nightmare as the lead character. You are willing her on every step of the way, but understand why no-one believes her story. Some excellent set pieces and shocking moments makes this good horror/thriller entertainment and makes you realise there is so much potential to reimagine those classic horror monsters films.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
Missed opportunity
An interesting and good looking film seems to strike the wrong tone and leaves you confused.
Halloween (2018)
Nostalgic journey into horror
Halloween 2018 takes you on a nostalgic journey back to the original 1978 movie, acknowledging its best parts. And for this we are grateful, as Jamie Lee Curtis tries to bury her past once and for all with tense and action packed results. There are moments of creepiness but unfortunately also unnecessary moments of gore. Overall a solid horror film though for fans and new comers.
Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
Fast paced entertaining horror
This is the best Halloween movie since the original came out. It starts as it means to go on with action and nods to the past that will have horror fans glued. It's so fast paced it needs to almost slow down for a rest half way through before the thrilling climax. An excellent sequel.
The Nun (2018)
Mixed bag
Some atmospheric creepy moments are created, but there is little substance and overall it makes little sense.
