Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
They killed her!!?
This was a great movie. However, it lost a star from me for making the audience believe Ilsa is dead. They've spent two films building up Ilsa as being Ethan's equal, and hinted at an eventual romance. She's been able to fight off multiple men bare-handed yet she meets her demise by one guy when she has a sword? Then they brush past her death like it means nothing, only for her to be replaced by a new woman. I thought it was a huge disservice to the character.
I know Rebecca Ferguson is very busy so she might have asked to leave, but I'm hoping this isn't the end for my favorite character in these films. She deserves a happy ending, or at least a better death than the one she received in this movie. It really took me out of the rest of the film. Hopefully, we'll see her again in Part Two.
Malum (2023)
Watch Last Shift Instead
When LAST SHIFT (2014) came out, it was the first film I'd seen in a few years that unnerved me. It was creepy & gritty. It felt like they did a lot with a small amount of money. When I found out that MALUM was a "re-imagining" of LAST SHIFT with the daughter being race-swapped, I had concerns.
Right from the jump, the acting in this movie is awful. It had some positive things going for it because its the same filmmaker. Its shot pretty decently and there's some good special effects. It just doesn't have that grittiness like LAST SHIFT. It's by no means high polish, but its more polished than its predecessor. It felt like a tv movie that was done to push a more diverse main character. Very unnecessary film.
The Predator (2018)
So much potential... Wasted
I've loved the Predator most of my life and I had been waiting 8 years for this movie. I was so hopeful that Shane Black would do a great job, but this movie didn't know what it wanted to be. The characters never acted like they were in danger of being killed. There was no sense of urgency. The tension and suspense that are a big part of a Predator movie were nowhere to be found. I was entertained by the action sequences and jokes (of all things), but I left the theater disappointed cuz I don't know when I'll see my favorite movie character on screen again.
