Poor pacing and distracting CGI
28 January 2024
Overall the subject matter told, as well the period over which it is told works well.

The pacing is very much off though, quite a few moments where the story bumbles along unnecessarily, while the end felt overly rushed. As if the budget or running time ran out and scenes were cut. It could've used a bit more finesse to wrap the various storylines up.

Acting is decent, but nothing outstanding that would've helped the storytelling.

Completely forgivable if the drama was well done would've been the CGI and cinematography/editing.

The 3D CGI often felt like previs material used for the Final Cut, and the in camera effects were so poorly done that I think Thunderbirds might've done a better job.

Editing wise there were some distracting pans and cuts that broke dramatic tension or story flow.

All in all, this movie has so much potential, and because of it I did enjoy the movie to the end.

Animaniacs (2020–2023)
5/10
Nor here or there.
28 November 2020
The opening episode takes the mickey out cheap reboots. But it's a bit the kettle calling the pot black as Animaniacs 2020 is just that.

Where Ducktales 2020 stayed true to its original format but still made it contemporary, Animaniacs feels dated and not on format.

The jokes are not sharp and daring, the writing is lazy and the contemporization feels forced and off beat. The writing and comedy is not up to 2020 standards, and even lost the edge of its nineties version.

I really wanted this to work, but I've been let down.

A good ending, but doesn't stand on it's own
26 April 2019
The movie wraps up the series nicely, but as with many finales the movie doesn't really stand in it's own until half way through.

The first half is wrapping up all that happened before, and a lot has happened to so many different strong and complex characters. The hour and a half it takes to reach the real 'end game' feels both a bit shallow, and slow.

All in all, the movie does what it promises, end the series, but for those who are not die hard fans, might find the end result a bit uninspired and dutiful.

Ace Attorney (2012)

Best game adaption I've ever seen
30 January 2012
This movie by Miike Takashi is based on the game with the same name by Capcom for Nintendo consoles. These two preliminaries might scare some off, but I can truly say that this is movie is the best game adaption I've ever seen, and one of the most mainstream films by Takashi.

Takashi, sadly enough, known for its more violent films was attending the World Premiere screening at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and requested everyone to watch this movie with the heart of a child.

And yes, even though this movie is intended for adults, its well suitable for young teenager as well.

The fun mix of anime, game and cinema is working very well. Not just in visual style, but also in storytelling and humour. The story itself is well presented and the viewer receives clues and information so that it feels involved in the quest. For the quick thinkers amongst the viewers, this way of story telling might take a bit of the speed out of the movie, as all information gets presented step by step.

In the end, Ace Attorney is a fun and stylistic movie. Not just for Japanese cinema lovers, but for everyone who enjoys a bit of silliness and a good mystery.

Great story, awesome visuals and good acting. The main flaw is that it failed to keep up the pace for the whole duration of the movie, but still interesting enough to stay interested.

Great show, watch it with the whole family!

Waterworld (1995)

Like a 70s cop chase movie
16 July 2006
Hooo-boy, here we go. This is a movie I should dislike, but its the few "bad" movies I actually really enjoy watching, together with: "A Weekend With Bernies". When I saw the movie again on the BBC service, I felt like checking it out over here and I was overly surprised to see that this movie is from 1995. I expected it to be from at least mid 80s. The movie feels a bit like: "Espace from New York". The characters and the props would fit in the same category. The movie is very up tempo, but maybe a bit too stretchy, it just keeps going and there is not much of a story line, just that this guy has this nice boat, he tries to find this piece of land, and weird looking pirates on water scooters fire at him. Anyways, this is a fun movie to watch, it has these 70 style stunt moves with flying water scooters and enormous over the top explosions and over the top type castings. Also the props feel very low budget and the script is one written on a big stash of pot in one evening. But this makes the movie a lot of fun, it has this B movie cult feeling to it, it is so bad, it makes you laugh and actually enjoy it. You keep wondering what ridiculous thing will happen next...and I can promise you, it'll be more surprising than you could think off. Anyways, this is something to rent for a rainy Sunday, or maybe to catch on the TV and tape it to your TIVO.

Even worse than watching the grass grow.
12 November 2004
This movie is really bad. It has it's moments but it's another Dutch B-movie. Explicit sex and bad audio. The audio is not cync with the movie and the actors speak like they are performing a play in front of a large crowd. This makes it unnatural to hear. The acting is a bit stiff and slow, it had a good beginning but moves towards complete boringness. The story is okay, it's of course from a book written in the beginning of 1900's. But still this movie isn't there, directing is boring and standard, acting is boring and stiff. The only thing that is pretty big for a Dutch movie are the sets with lots of extras running around and some nice photographic shots.

This movie needs a remake.

Carmen (1984)

What you can expect from an opera on film.
2 March 2004
I want to comment on the review of Mike. The fact that he writes: "the vast armpit hair on Carmen" and that he finds the subtitles annoying doesn't make a movie awful. He watched the movie against his will at school. But if you do enjoy opera, and realise that in the time this movie is shot or represents the ladies didn't shave there armpits this is a pretty good movie. Good sets, deep, classic story and the camera work is okay but what can you aspect from an opera that is written to be watched from just 1 angle, the audience in front of the stage. This movie is a French classic with all the good singing of an opera, good sets, average camerawork and good stage acting. (An opera is always more body language because of the fact it used to be in a hard language to be understanded from the "normal" people.). So, enjoy this movie!

No real relation to the first movie.
1 January 2004
The sequel from the instant classic Battle Royale. In this movie 42 kids had to kill each other for there own survival. Nice action, good manga style and good story. But this new movie has no real relation to the first one. The only relation is that there are kids and that they have the neckbombs. But the mission now is that the kids have to find the winners from the first movie. But sadly enough, they get dropped on a beach where, you get a small Saving Private Ryan beachlanding. Then they arrive at the enemy's base. They make an alliance and they fight against the Japanse gouverment. This whole thing happends in one big line, without any real connection about kids having to kill eachother and the whole concept of killing your friends. Maybe the movie would be interresting if the kids really had to search a big place and that Nanahara (winner from the first movie) had to run for his live and had to kill the kids that where chasing him. Only cool thing was that the kids didn't where in couples, if one of the two was further away then 50 meters, the neckbomb would explode. Only this feature is only used once when a little girl is to affraid to leave her hiding location.

The movie starts of nice, had some nice features but the whole story is too blund and rapes the whole concept. Sad.

Another crime movie, but still allright
24 December 2003
This movie is another crime movie, about the police, betrayal and sex. And of course some cockfights between the ego's of the criminals. Acting is allright, story is good. The only bad thing of this movie is that it isn't any special. Don't go see it in the cinema but rent it, or maybe buy it in the budget section.
