Armageddon (1998)
far fetched, over the top, funny. i like it!
*minor spoilers* This film follows the basic asteroid going to hit earth plot. They find out about the asteroid, some brave souls are sent to destroy it, they get into problems, and one has to die to save the planet. With one major twist. Does NASA send a group of highly trained astronauts to save the earth from destruction? No. instead they call on Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his gang of oil drilling misfits. This happy gang are rounded up from a strip club, casino and various other hideouts, to save the world.
This makes from a many laughs and eventually a "happy ending". If you want a serious film about saving the planet, don't watch this. Its way to far fetched, and has far too many funny moments to be taken seriously. This is great entertainment. For example when the mad Russian astronaut hits the space shuttles engine with a spanner to get it started! Hilarious. Steve Buscemi's character provides some of the films funniest moments. The acting's OK and the special effects are great.
If you want a far fetched, over the top, voyage into space with the strangest bunch of astronauts around, watch this film. Don't take it seriously, don't expect it to be realistic, just sit back and watch it.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
A fairy tale vibe
I wasn't sure what to make of this film at first, the opening scenes didn't really grab my attention, then there were a couple of scenes in the Moulin rouge theatre, these were great, I did wonder at one point after several minutes of demented clown like things when teen spirit started to play what I was watching.
The film is bit surreal, with a fairy tale type vibe running through it. I liked the scene in the elephant when Satine is trying to hide Christian, that made me laugh.
I have seen Romeo and Juliet and it is clear that these two films are both by Luhrmann, they have the same feel to them.
This film was quiet different from what I expected, but was still good. The acting was good, there could maybe have been a bit less singing, but then it is a musical. Overalll this is an enjoyable film.
American Pie 2 (2001)
funny, amusing, hilarious and over the top.
This film was on TV the other night. And having nothing better to do I watched it. It's funny in the same way that scary movie is funny. Over the top, rude humor. It's hilarious in places. I haven't watched the first film or the third, so I didn't no any history or story from the first film, but it didn't matter it was pretty easy to pick up what had gone on.
The acting isn't great and neither was the story, it's predictable, but that doesn't matter. This is one of those films you can just watch, for the jokes. It's aimed at teenagers and if you like the humor in the scary movie series I would defiantly recommend this. I don't know if I'll be rushing out to rent the other films, but it was worth watching.
Open Water (2003)
Cut the first hour the last 20 mins is the only bit worth watching
Advertised as Blair Witch meets Jaws. I simply couldn't see how this film could be bad.
The Blair Witch element gained from using hand held camera shots, looked more like a home movie than a blockbuster movie, something open water defiantly was not. And jaws only because the story has sharks in.
Basically for an hour of this film, all you see are a couple having a domestic in the water.
Until the sharks appear, at which point things get marginally more interesting. For about 20 minutes. As you watch the couple muddle through the shark attack, it becomes increasingly obvious how the story will end. However there is a small twist at the end, but at best this is disappointing.
During the film, you do not get to know the two main characters; you merely seem to be watching from a distance, the lack of chances to get to know the characters is one of the main flaws with this film, as you have no chance to become involved. Dodgy camera angles, lack of character development and a long boring first hour are just a few of these films problems.
However on the plus side we got free chocolate bars on our way out of the cinema!
This film is watch able. But I'm not convinced, the last 20 minutes worth the boring wait.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
A horror film, with a comedy element, perfect for late night viewing.
After reading the reviews for this film, I didn't know whether or not it would be worth watching. But I watched it on TV the other night, and was pleasantly surprised. This would be the type of thing you would think of when someone says horror film. Dark lonely road, to teenagers scared out of their minds, mysterious, scary monster, and the good old chase scenes.
The film can be split into two parts, the first 40 minutes before the creeper is revealed which will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time, and was brilliant. And the last hour, which had a few scary moments but does not really compare to the opening 40 minutes. The creeper being revealed half way through the film ruined it, it would have been better to reveal the creeper nearer the end of the film.
I didn't think this film was that gory, but that's just my opinion. It did get a bit far fetched at times, but I think that just added to the film, and helped to make it funny. This film did have quiet a few funny moments, such as the end scene, which helped lighten the dark plot.
There were a few moments where the characters seemed to state the obvious, like `You know the part in horror movies when somebody does something really stupid, and everybody hates him for it? This is it.' This didn't really need saying.
My favorite thing about this film has to be the look of utter terror on Darry's face practically throughout the whole film.
I didn't really get the psychic, she confused me, coz what she said didn't come true, the telephone call was ok, but did she really need to reappear at the end of the film?
I enjoyed this film, it's worth a look, the simple plot and scary moments make it perfect to watch with a group of friends late one night, because the plot is easy to follow and won't confuse. The only thing I did find slightly disappointing was the lack of conclusion, it was just left. Why was the creeper there? But then I suppose that's for the sequel!
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
The best teen movie ever.
This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time, and by far the best teen movie around. It's the kind of film you can just sit, watch and be entertained without having to do too much thinking. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I watch this film, it always makes me laugh. The best bit of this film has to be when Patrick and Joey are arguing about taking cat out on a date in the corridor and Patrick does a cheesy grin. That is one of many hilarious parts in this film that will guarantee to get you smiling. This is a feel good film to watch when you're feeling sad. And even if you don't like the story it's worth watching for the brilliant soundtrack.
The Prince & Me (2004)
Not the greatest film I've ever seen.
***slight spoiler***
Basically a modern fairy tale, I found this film amusing in parts, but mostly predictable, even the attempt at an unexpected twist failed. This is aimed at 8 - 12 year old girls, who dream of a handsome prince to Wisk them off there feet and give them their happy ending. And for anyone outside that age bracket it is miscible. And given the choice I would not have paid ₤4 to see this and will not be rushing out to buy the video. If you want a romantic comedy I would recommend watching 10 things I hate about you rather than this. The good, I guess that Luke Mably's prince was relatively convincible and it did have a few amusing moments as I mentioned earlier. The highlights (few and far between) lawnmower racing, and the princes minder getting hooked on the X-box. The bad, cheesy lines, predictable fairy tale ending, and mainly its ability to make me go to sleep. I would not recommend this film unless you are a 12 year old girl! Having said that it some how managed to make 2 of my friends cry at the `happy' ending and they're 16!!!
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000)
the pain, the screaming pain
my little sister dragged me off to see this film
i can quiet honestly say it is the biggest load of rubbish i have ever seen and it pains me to admit i actually paid money to see this trash.
save yourself the money and the pain and don't see this film. i fell asleep in the cinema for the first time during this film, the storyline was rubbish, it wasn't remotely funny or interesting.
please please please do yourself a favour and keep as far away from this trash as possible, i doubt even your children will like it.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
new improved formula
I thought this was by far the best of the three Potter films. The last two were distinctly average and while they remained true to the books in practically every way, I felt they did not do justice to the stories. This film took a different approach which worked much better.
This film as with the book has a slightly darker tone; it takes a slightly less child like approach than the last two films, with less cheesy lines and much improved acting from Daniel Radcliffe among others.
I thought the new layout for Hogwarts was much better than the fairy story perfect school of before, the over grown grounds and steep hills were much more how I pictured the school to be.
Cuaron has taken the films that Columbus started and in a sense made it grow up, I especially loved the way in which the shots were connected by showing the time passing either through the clock or by the Womping willow tree.
The special effects used in this film were great, the Hippogriff Buckbeak was particularly good, and I loved the scene where it flew over the great lake with Harry. The Dementors were also good, providing the film with a scary darker element than previously.
the only bad points that I could find with this film was that for die hard potter fans who know the books inside out there were several storylines which were left out. Secondly the scene after Harry's found out about Sirius "betraying" his parents where he is crying brought the memories of the previous films screaming back.
Overall Cuaron has made a much improved version of Harry Potter, taking a slightly darker approach than before, this film seemed to flow much better than the first two, and while still providing the fun element of the first films. Provided a more mature approach from both the actors and the way in which the film was presented. I was a bit annoyed that several storylines and characters e.g. Oliver wood from the books got the chop, but the main story remained the same.
For die hard Potter fans looking for the book to be played out exactly down to the last detail on screen you will be slightly disappointed. But this potter film holds much more for teenagers and adults than the last two. Cuaron deserved a round of applause for this film. I'm looking forward to seeing what the 2005 installment has in store for us.
Troy (2004)
Not the best but still ok
With so many big names in the credits and a good trailer, I was expecting more from troy but I wasn't too disappointed, I found an entertaining film which was good even if it wasn't the best I've seen. I didn't find the length of this film a problem; it didn't drag on and managed to remain entertaining right up until the closing credits.
The good
The main character played by Eric Bana, Brad Pitt and Orlando bloom were played well. The storylines were good and kept me entertained, and probably the most obvious Orlando Bloom and brad Pitt need I say more!
The bad
The special effects were good but have been seen before in films such as lord of the rings, there were a lot of battle scenes which got a bit repetitive.
Whether you're male or female, teenager or adult I think this film will entertain, whether you like big battles, a love story or just Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt there's something there for everyone. Go and be entertained.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Brilliant
**slight spoiler**
I loved this film; it had me sat on the edge of my seat for the whole two hours. The acting was good although a couple of the lines were a bit tacky; all the main characters played their parts well. The Storylines were good as well.
The special effects were one of the main reasons I went to see this film and I was not disappointed, they were great, the bit where the Hollywood sign got destroyed was a bit over the top but who cares its a film. The best bit was when all the buildings were freezing up when they were in the center of the storm.
I would defiantly recommend this film to anybody, if you're going to see it go to a showing in a big screen because it makes the special effects even better. I though rely enjoyed this film, it's even worth a second viewing.
Friends (1994)
The end of an era
I only really started watching friends a couple of years ago but since then I've been a massive fan, it never fails to make me laugh.
I don't have favorite episode just lots of favorite moments, like when Joey gets locked in the cabinet by the burglar and when he gets the turkey stuck on his head, then when Rachel and Ross get locked out of the apartment and Rachel starts worrying about Emma. I haven't got a favorite character, I just love the way the cast react to one another and work together to make the show funny.
The last episode made me cry when they all left their keys on the side. Now it's time to collect the DVD's and relive all the classic moments from a great show.
Even though there will never be another new episode the show will never get old, people wont get tired of watching repeats. Friends will remain as funny as ever.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Weirdly brilliant
Donnie Darko's a great film, its a bit like a dream where your not really sure what's happening this weird rabbit thing (Frank) appears and tells Donnie to do all this stuff. That's part of the reason its so amazing because it's confusing, normally that would be annoying but here it just adds to the film. You don't have to understand it to enjoy it, Donnie doesn't understand and neither do you. I sat for the whole film with my eyes glued to the screen, wondering how this whole thing would unravel. The music is another reason I like this film; it's present from beginning to end and adds a lot to it.
I read something somewhere that seed a "wonderful beautifully twisted masterpiece' that sums this film up. You don't understand it but you don't need to, watch it once and be confused.
The best bit: 6 foot guy in a rabbit costume.
Almost Famous (2000)
great film
***spoilers***
This is a feel-good funny film, its about a boy (William) raised by his school teacher mother, who gets offered a deal to write for a magazine, he tours with the band (still water) and ends up writing a piece for rolling stones.
I loved the party scenes where Russell gets high and jumps off the roof, then starts talking to the flower. This is just a really fun film, I'd recommend it to almost any one, I don't no much about live music from this time but they made it look real, the atmosphere created when the band performed was brilliant, and it wasn't all good, the arguments and bad things were in there too which made it even better. The only downside was the way the William/ penny lane thing was left up in the air at the end, which was annoying, because the will they wont they thing had been running for quiet a while, and also the airplane thing at the end, not good, it looked really fake, but apart from that a great film.
I loved this film, I didn't want it to end, it makes you smile and want to dance around the room like a mad thing, if you want a great film, with a good sound track and a few laughs this is the film. Watch it just once and see.
The O.C. (2003)
like Dawson's Creek, Love this!
I used to watch Dawson's Creek when it was on TV the other summer, and thought this looked similar, it was better, the whole perfect Californian beautiful people, sunny weather and parties has a definite feel good factor to it, especially when you see the perfect people don't have nearly as great lives as they appear to have.
As a teenage drama, this has to be one of the best I've seen, I love everything about this show, right down to the worlds best ever theme tune. And find myself tuning in not just to watch the Sunday evening first showing but the repeat the next Saturday as well, if you love the summer, like Dawson's creek and addictive shows you'll love this.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Worth a look
as a teenage girl I suppose I was the target audience, I thought this film was worth a look, the special effects when the ships in the harbor were being attacked were good, even if the story was too run of the mill love story for my liking, but saying that I did find myself crying towards the end when the planes crashed. the first hour is worth skipping and doesn't really add anything to the story, its basically just back ground which I don't think you really need, it basically says these guys are friends and he's going out with her, he goes away. The interesting bits don't actually start till they arrive at Pearl Harbor. I hated Ben Afflecks performance, josh Harnett was way better, Affleck was too "look at me I'm so good" for my liking.
Overall opinion, worth a look if you like a bit of action, and if your a teenage girl.
Hidalgo (2004)
Give the horse an Oscar
Having become a fan of Viggo Mortensen due to the lord of the rings trilogy, i set out to see this film with high expectations, and was a bit let down.
Being a "horsey" person, I did find the film entertaining, but the plot did get lost in the middle and it was quiet slow to get started, However the main race sequences were enjoyable, and the connection between horse and rider was clear, making the film moving when Hidalgo has a brush with death. The horse should get an Oscar for his performance as he was the best actor in the film.
If you like horses I would go to see this film, purely to see Hidalgo's performance. But otherwise give it a miss.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
A simple story line turned brilliant by actors, and set design
--A few possible spoilers--
I saw this film on C4 last night.
I was expecting a "hide behind a cushion" scary, horror film, but was pleasantly surprised to find Sleepy Hollow was completely watchable, without being boring, and still having a few great look away moments.
Yet again Depp gives a stunning performance this time as Constable Ichabod Crane, brought to Sleepy Hollow to find a logical explanation for several murders which locals believe were committed by a headless horseman, determined not to believe the horseman rumours he sets about trying to solve the mystery.
The mysterious, ghost-like, misty atmosphere give the perfect setting for this story. Combine this with some fairytale elements and a few funny moments (my favourite of which has to be either Ichabod's regular fainting or the expression on his face when he's hiding on his bed after realizing the horseman is real), makes this a very entertaining film.
This would be a great film to watch if your looking for something that is not too serious or scary, which still contains an element of fun. Perfect for a Halloween night with friends.
Watch this film if you like films which are a bit scary but still contain an element of fun. But be warned it does contain quiet a few gory moments.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
happy.confusing. brilliance
*small spoilers*
if you like the confusing, not quiet sure whats happening factor of films such as Donnie Darko this films for you.
The film centers around Joel (Carrey) who after discovering his girlfriend Clementine (Winslet) has erased him from her memory, attempts to erase all memory of her from his mind, but as his memories begin to disappear he finds himself rediscovering his love for her, leading to a race through his memories in an attempt to hide Clementine and stop her disappearing from his life forever.
The film did have quiet a lot of flashbacks from various times in Joel's life which did get confusing sometimes, and it was a bit slow at the beginning.
However if you are looking for a film thats fun and a bit different, this could be what your looking for. You may need to see it twice to understand it.
The title sums up this film, happy, confusing and brilliant.
