Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016)
A brilliant wee series.
Well what can I say. Having watched the British version I was expecting anything too much but WOW!. It was everything I could want from a detective series. Witty, quirky and addictive. SOOOO addictive. Just binged watched the lot. The lead characters are just wonderful and so evidently watchable even the mad psycho 'assassin'. Dirk Gently is eminently likeable and just weird enough to keep you on your toes. Plenty of blood and gore but not gratuitous violence and mad mad mad. But in the nicest possible way. I really hope they pick this up again and Im distraught at there only being 2 series. I loved it.
Ragnarok (2020)
Brilliant
I absolutely loved this. Did not expect anything and was prepared to give a Norwegian production with English subtitles a go. Wow! And I'm so glad I did. The story builds slowly but by the 2nd series I'm completely hooked. The appearance of each god is like a detective story leading up to their unveiling and so far, I've got them all right. Loki is just wonderful as we watch his descent in God like madness. Only 12 episodes long I really hope Netflix puts out for more. It's main attraction for me is the calm like normality of the action, a total contrast to the Marvel and its high tec and special effects. 10 out of 10 for me.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Awful
Well I made it to the end, well I mean it was on but I found a million things to do while it was on, waiting for some bit to engage me, and I can honestly say, that episode 6, and the middle white tall baddie, were the only 2 bits that I actually paid attention to. (I have no idea who the tall white people were as the previous bits bored the life out of me). The lead characters were awful. Galadriel had the soul of a bottle of shampoo, all glossy but of no other use, Elrond . Well......I got to the stage I couldnt even look at him, with his raggy hair and squashed in face, he was just NOT Elrond. The hobbity people were annoying, pointless and given far too much screen time, and as for their songs......agggg, shut them up please..... Gandalf ( I assume it was Gandalf) says "I'm good" which made me cringe...after him talking like a toddler for 7 episodes. The master elf craftsman was smug and needed a good slap on the chops. The man elf was hopeless with even less expressions than Galadriel, looking permanently in a complete daze wondering what the hell was going on. I had been so excited for this and now im completely deflated thinking. Oh god how much of my money are they going to spend on the next 4 series of this drivel. Yes there are incredibly rude, easy to please 10 star reviewers who talk about anyone who finds fault as trolls, (my previous review having been deleted) but honestly it made a wonderful story into the most boring, dull and self-righteous piece of nonsense I've ever seen on the tv.
Life of Brian (1979)
Absolute brilliance
This film, made over 50 years ago predicts the trials of modern-day society to a T. It is so ahead of its time that it makes uncomfortable viewing for many of today's viewers. It tackles many subjects from religious intolerance to gender transience. Watching it today it is as funny and even more pertinent than when it was first shown and banned all those years ago. I'm glad that it still upsets some people, whose unyielding views on life are otherwise feted. To me it symbolises rebellion against societal norms, which unfortunately has been knocked out of many of today's populace. I love it and will continue to watch it over and over again.
The Boys (2019)
WOW!! A different Kind of Superhero Series and its Great!
Just loved this. It takes the superhero genre and stick a bomb right up your preconceptions and turns it wildly upside down. It's a binge fest... Look out for Bobby Singer and Soldier Boy from Supernatural with more surprises in store. A bunch of commercial superheroes fighting to keep their 'brand name' from being destroyed by some really 'peed off' anti superheroes. Funny, graphic and above all adult its got everything in just the right amounts. Karl Urban and Anthony Starr are just phenomenal as the lead protagonists, .. Both of them grab your hearts, then kick it out to touch, while at the same time have you grinning like a Cheshire cat. I loved it.
300 (2006)
Not a film for the cancel culture
I decided to watch this film after visiting Thermopoli and actually feeling the sense of history in the surrounding countryside. To see and stand on the mound where the Persian army shot dead those 300 plus a few more with the 40000 arrows was emotionally inspiring.
The film itself glorified, quite rightly these soldiers whose lives were completely focussed on defending their culture. Gerard Butler was a magnificent Leonidas, brooding, tough and immensely loyal to those who have put their lives under his command. The moody and dark dramatic graphics added depth and atmosphere. I loved it.
All those who are whining about the films brutality cannot ever comprehend the actual horrific reality of war. Yes these 300 did hold back a 70,000 strong army for 3 days. Yes there was stabbing and maiming and blood, gore and death. No they ultimately did not win but that was not in question. These men willingly gave their lives for a few days respite for the Athenians but more than that they gave hope.
The Witcher (2019)
Loved it especially Season 2
Absolutely brilliant. Everything about this program grabbed me. The first season seemed a bit bitty piecey but the second really was brilliant. There was a flow this season which was missing in the first. Keep going!!
The Time Traveler's Wife (2022)
wow!
Having heard of the book, I thought I would give this a go and my goodness Im glad I did....... Binge watched the whole of the first series this afternoon and absolutely loved it.. so did my partner and thats a first... no browsing on his mobile phone at all...... cant wait to see more.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
it may not be the original star wars but I liked it
Ok so it wasnt Harrison Ford but come on, who is. I thought it was good and had me gripped from second episode. I am glad they made it as it did fill in a gap, and I thought it was a pretty decent attempt.
The Lost City (2022)
No Chemistry
The first half of the film was really good. The characters were fun and I thought 'great' . However after Brad Pitt was ceremoniously splattered I felt the film lost its glamour, lost its edge and specifically lost its humour. Tatum Channing had absolutely no chemistry either with the audience or Sandra Bullock. She was great and tried her best but without an equal and opposite stand out leading man it began to feel laboured and the last half hour dragged on and on and on..... Daniel Radcliff felt as though he was trying out his newest acting lessons and in no way was the commanding presence of an arch villain. Im giving it 5 as the first half was pretty good.
Jurassic Island (2022)
ahem what can i say?
Ahem, what can I say.... it was so bad I watched it through to the end actually hoping that none of them got off the island. Ham acting all around especially the zombie with the wiggling tongue. I wondered if they meant it to be this bad.....so bad it was watchable. As previous reviewer said, if they had run with the idea that this is a spoof, they might have got away with it as there were some out loud laughs due to the direction. The dinosaurs were spectacularly awful, I think it brought to mind graphics from the 1980s, and the lack of detail to the background continuation was shameful. However if they only had a £100 to spend I suppose its not bad (the price of hiring a huge maritime sail boat and an cornucopian hip flask)
The King's Man (2021)
Not one for the Scots
Hm if there ever was a film designed to show imperialism and English dominance through their intelligence, bravery and just all round superiority, this was it........Everything that happened at the beginning of the 20th century was entirely due a manic Scotsman with a dodgy accent who had the cheek to demand Scottish Independence and would achieve this through the destruction of Europe in World War 1 using every known 'baddie' our history books can find. I found it offensive and degrading to us Scots and it might have been written by Westminster in order to demean our desire for freedom by contrasting this mans maniacal behaviour with the 'good and righteous' quintessential Englishman.........total spin doctoring rubbish......... very disappointed.
Derry Girls (2018)
For anyone who still remembers their childhood
I have binged watched this series many, many times and its still as fresh and funny as the first time. I've read some reviews and I realise there's all sorts in this world but I truly love it. The girls are spot on....... Michelle strikes a very strong accord with me....but I disagree that they 'look older than the teachers' as someone put it. They are 'Derry Girls' and what they have been through might put a few lines on their faces..... I'm from Glasgow and i've seen a more than a few 'older' looking teenagers.....must be the common genes or the cold and wet.
Sliding Doors (1998)
One of my favourite films ever
Theres no doubt about it, I love this film. I used to have it on video and hadnt watched it since then (probably about 15 years) but on a whim decided to watch it and wow! I remembered why I loved it. First of all Gwyneth is looking wonderful ( especially with the Brad Pitt haircut). Second I had forgotten how funny Clive is as the go to man in the pub. He finds the poor Gerry's predicaments hilarious and his laugh is ever so infectious. John Hannah is just adorable as the hero and overall the film hasnt aged one bit. It could still have been made last week. I am so glad I returned to this and will definitely be watching it again and again.
Flashback (2021)
A great little comedy
Absolutely loved this little french film, once I found the online subtitles, it made it even better. It was funny, pertinent and informative and I watched it twice. An absolute gem.
Don't Look Up (2021)
too clever and deep for the majority of viewers to understand.
Very clever, deep, witty and dry. It will unfortunately be derided by the very people it was written to demonstrate. A sad but ironically funny satire of the trivial and inane fascination with media personalities and multi billion dollar industries and the people who would put their lives in their grasping hands, through ignorance and stupidity. It is also deeply disturbing as we realise just how knowingly and willingly controlled we are by these psychopathic maniacs in charge of the world business and politics. Those with no understanding of the aims of the film will whitter on about the acting or the lack of obvious comedy, but anyone with a hint of knowledge would realise and despair at the underlying message. I loved it, warts and all.
Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
Great up to season 7
Rory, Constantiine, Sarah, Nora Ava, Ray, AmayaNate, Zari and the 'Cool' guy are great. In fact most of the early seasons, although mad, bring fun, adventure and life to this series, but this last season with the overwhelming of psychotic females, especially the tediously annoying Astra has deteriorated rapidly. However, it was spike to see all the past legends try to save Gideon. (I would have saved her and left Astra).
The Great (2020)
Huzzah!
Oh dear according to one critic, maybe a relative of the original Peter the 'great ideas' himself, I should have an IQ of under 80. Unfortunately his 'theory' is rather off, being a registered member of MENSA, as is his review of this satirical witty and completely politically incorrect wonderful series. Not only have I binged watched the whole of season 1 but am compelled to read about the 'true' Catherine. Killing 2 birds of being thoroughly entertained and also learning factual history. What more can I ask of a series? Huzzah!!
The King (2019)
Absolute must
This film was well made, brilliantly cast and an absolute joy to watch. The leading cast performers were brilliant and time just flew in. I am not concerned by total historical accuracy as long as the film keeps you actively engaged which it did for the whole 2 hours. I loved it .....
Special Correspondents (2016)
Full of dry british humour
Didnt have a clue what to expect but Im so glad I did. The story line was unexpected and a fantastically original. There was many laugh out loud bits especially when they started their broadcasting from the apartment. Subtle yet obvious I absolutely loved it and havent laughed as much since the remake of Jumanji. Well done all
Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back) (2018)
A little gem
Must admit find it hard to find films I like but I'm glad I went for this. Funny, poignant, and completely watchable I loved this little gem. Well done on this entirely british film, full of dark comedy and daft enough to grab your attention.
Lucifer (2016)
Cancelled No way!!
I rarely watch the tv but this was one show I absolutely adored. Tom Ellis is sheer perfection in this comedy/drama and I have a soft spot for Doctor Linda and Maze. Every one of the actors brought their own special 'something' to a great show. OK so sometimes it was a bit farcical that but was what brought it its magic. I've seen fans from all over the world proclaim their love for this show and if someone doesn't pick it up it was be put down as one of the lost gems of the entertainment industry,. Whoever put it forward for cancellation should be sacked.
