Longmire (2012)
Filled with Action, Drama, Beautiful Landscapes and Great Characters
Longmire provides a great story and exposes one to the native American cultures. The series builds believable and lifelike characters. Each episode includes stunning landscapes. It has provided me with many hours of pleasurable viewing.
This show really deserves a 10/10 rating but for one major flaw. Each season ends with a cliff hangar. What a pity that a show of this caliber finds it necessary to end with a cliff hangar to ensure viewers watch the next season. I have always found that poor entertainment relied on that tactic.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
Fight, fight, fight and fight some more
This movies received a high user rating and on the strength of that I went to see the movie. The movie starts with a lengthy car chase and is followed by a lengthy fight scene and then another lengthy fight scene and then another lengthy fight scene and so on. And it has a very weak story line. Nothing more to say, that's the movie in 30 seconds.
Cape Town (2015)
Enjoyable with Bad Accents
An enjoyable "who-done-it" series with a range of plots and sub plots to make the story interesting. Pity about the very poor South African accents by Boris Kodjoe (Santus Snook) and Trond Espen Seim (Mat Joubert). Often I could not understand what they were saying. South Africa is such a melting pot of accents, they could have easily woven their true accents into the ancestor of their characters leaving the audience with a more authentic experience. The local talent was most enjoyable and authentic in the range of characters found in South Africa. Deon Meyer writes entertaining stories that depict many aspects of South African life.
Dexter (2006)
What differentiates a superb series from other good series
"Dexter" is a superb series and beats most of its competition with other series for one main reason. The final episode in a season does not result in a soap-opera-type ending. A soap-opera-type ending gives lots of hype but no closure leaving you only with a promise of answers in the next season. For example I enjoyed "Prison Break" Season One until the last episode where it leaves one with no answers. Dexter cleverly tells a complete story across the season and still leaves one with something to think about for the next season. Nothing happens by accident and nothing is held back; nor is there a pretence of possible excitement and closure in the future. Instead it delivers with perfect timing each time. In fact, each episode tells a complete story of it's own - a rare trait in TV series.
The Iron Lady (2011)
Well-made but an injustice to Margaret Thatcher
I think that the movie was well made and well acted. I was fascinated to learn about Margaret Thatcher's phenomenal career in an almost all-male political world. I think they did Margaret Thatcher an injustice with regard to spending so much of the film focusing on her illness. Perhaps a little less focus on her illness and a bit more on her unusual successes would have been more realistic and have resulted in a more rewarding film. Meryl Streep plays a credible role throughout her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher both in the prime of her political career to her portrayal during her illness. I also enjoyed the exposure to both her political and personal life.
