The Maus (2017)
If you're looking for standard friday thrills then skip, but if you want tragic, thought provoking "elevated horror" then this is for you.
Please don't be put off by the low rating and disgruntled reviews. Many of them are ridiculously emphatic.
I blame this on the way Netflix markets the film. The tag "creature feature" also made me think I was in for a significantly different film, but unlike my fellow reviewers, I was pleasantly surprised with the film I got.
The film is a feast for the eyes, pulling off shots that will have you wondering "how did they do that??" without ever feeling gimmicky and gratuitous.
The actors slay here. There ability to channel pain, tragedy, and terror had me wondering "Who hurt y'all?"
The film has a lot to say about things that we would rather not think about. Themes of dog eat dog mentality in times of war and the inability of the privileged to empathise with the traumatized. I get the feeling that the film would greatly be bolstered with knowledge of war crimes committed in Bosnia, however, going in with little to no knowledge will not hurt your experience as it tells a universal story.
I cannot recommend this enough to viewers looking for more than a popcorn film.
