It Happened at Lakewood Manor (1977)
Buggin' 70s Camp
This one is just for fun. It didn't break any real new ground, but I don't think that was ever the intention. And let's face it, you know if this is going to be your kind of movie from the title. But for those of us that embrace the campy, silly, and low budget, it'll fill the bill just fine.
With a cast that is just random enough to make you do a double-take, the actors aren't sleepwalking through by any means. The insects attacking movies were well enough established by the late 70s so everyone is in on the joke and willing to go for it anyway.
The ants may be regular size, but that just leans credit to all the shots of them swarming. Some might actually make your skin crawl.
The Island (2005)
What a rush!
This Island is definitely a ride. The beginning shots set the tone for a fast paced movie. Since the plot is centered around the two main characters escaping their utopian type society and being hunted down, there are obviously going to be a huge number of chase sequences. The really cool ones are done with different vehicles and result in lots of explosions and destruction of the city.
Humor is also nicely inserted into the movie. Its usually centered around the clones not knowing much about the world, (understandable since they haven't been exposed to most of it) but its low key insertions make them funny.
While the basic premise has been done, The Island is very very good. As long as you go for a fun ride, and don't plan to pick at the movie for meaning and scientific accuracy.
Lorenzo (2004)
Disney got a little freaky on this one
I saw this short film before 'Raising Helen", and was quite surprised by it.
The animation combined with CG like movements from background to background is really good, but the storyline leaves something to be desired. An obnoxious cat, gets a spell put on his tail, by a odd mystical black cat, so it comes alive and starts to tango with him. And after a while i was starting to get a little freaked out by what all this cat was trying to do to his tail to make it stop. (running it over with a train, drowning it, electrocuting it, and ultimately wanting to take a knife to it) This cartoon is defiantly a different direction for Disney, and is not for everybody.
Peter Pan (2003)
wonderful and colorful retelling!!
Ever since I saw Disney's adaptation of this classic tale, i was hooked. But it always upset me that none of the movies stayed closer to the book. Well after waiting for several years it finally happened.
This one has it all. Great kid actors (Jeremy Sumpter is so cute). Special effects that really make you feel your flying through the clouds (which look like cotton candy once your in Neverland). And music that really helped with the atmosphere too.
So 'brace yourselves lads' it is a powerful thing.
