The Mighty B! (2008)
Little girls can't be gross?
When shows starring little boys or animal boy... things. Like Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, heck, even Crayon Shin-chan. They're treated as classic pieces of subversive animation. And if you don't like it, you're a prim and proper, an anime nerd, or awful girly thing. And the shows always seem to star little boys of some sort, targeted at little boys.
And honestly, it's kinda sexist. "Snips and snails and puppy dog tails" and "sugar, spice, and everything nice". Every girl is a cloud of perfume that never has to use the bathroom. And boys are a collection of hardcore toxic waste. How banal has the gross out comedy become, not because it's a gross out comedy, but because it focuses on males being gross.
Bessie Higgenbottom of the Mighty B! is here to set things right. With an absolute hoot of a comedy of the veins of Ren & Stimpy. But even more refreshing. And it's easy to see how, as many reviewers are targeting this show for being "gross and vapid" in a way they'd never target the boys shows.
Clearly our culture has some work to do when so many people are freaked out by a little girl picking her nose. Bless Bessie Higgenbottom, we need more of her kind.
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (2010)
One of the greatest pieces of animation out of the America and the Western world in years.
Bar none, this show is excellence. Very few flaws, and a great many things done exceedingly well. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a championed cult hit for a reason.
Also, it is perhaps the greatest achievement in flash animation at all to date. It truly shows what flash animation is capable of.
To expound upon this, one of the obvious reasons that My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is so lauded, is because the because the animation is so smooth and vibrant. Pretty much everything that can be animated, has been animated. Even just the eyes of characters is paid lots of attention to.
Another, absolutely excellent thing not touched upon enough when writing reviews of this show, is the amazing music. Even just the musicals are an achievement of music in animation. Equal to the most high budget Disney animation with musical numbers, it's hard to come away from Winter Wrap Wrap Up without a smile.
If only I could write 8,000 words detailing the excellence of this show.
