Alaskan Bush People (2014– )

Could have been great but they blew it.
8 May 2024
In the first episode a family of 9 (supposedly down to their last dime) heads to alaska to build a log cabin and live off the land. They get there and decide the trees are too small (!!!!), so they go to a lumberyard and buy $10,000 worth of beautiful pre-cut lumber!!

That sets the tone for what follows. I like movies about off-the-gridders but these clowns are not really what they seem. I really loathed the 5 sons who acted so macho and brash but were in fact losers. The boys (grown men in their 20s and 30s) were always talking to the film crew but had nothing to say.

The father Billy Brown was the only like-able person in the movie and even he seemed lost most of the time.

Was it all staged?. Some of.it was of course. You can't go into a doctor's office with a film crew and expect everyone there to act normal. They had to be coached. But i suppose they really were a family living in alaska and so that much was true.

Extremely good movie until the horrible WOKE ending
31 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Aubrey Plaza plays a dumb girl who has student debt of $60,000 because she wasted her college years on liberal arts subjects of no value. Now she can't get a decent job. I loved the job interview scene where the HR clown offered her an UNPAID 5 month internship after which they MIGHT hire her.

Needless to say, emily exploded and stormed out.

So she hooks up with these people into credit card fraud and makes big money, though all of it illegal.

Really great movie until the ending when emily's boyfriend gets robbed and all of a sudden the men turn into wimps and emily becomes super-girl and beats up the robbers to get the money back. I was gonna give this a 10 but the ending forced me into 6.

Aubrey Plaza is great as emily. She is really cute.

Horrible movie
4 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I like action/adventure movies and this sounded like a good one but not so. Berenger plays this tough guy loner who is irritated by this brassy female anthropologist . Naturally they fall for in love at the end. In between they find a tribe of pre-americans who have been living in this rocky mountain valley for 100 years undetected!!! Preposterous since the area is breathtakingly beautiful and has a magnificent 200 foot high waterfall. A place like that would have been turned into a national park long ago. Naturally the pre-americans are portrayed as wonderful people, in contrast to the horrible white people.

Only good thing in the movie is the dog Zip. A mangy mutt but super smart.

Way ahead of its time.
12 December 2023
The 1950s were the era of the really clunky low budget scifi movies. That changed in 1968 with 2001, but this was 12 years earlier and is really outstanding for its era. A super-civilization called the Krell lived on planet altair-5 and the story is about what killed them off. The answer is quite interesting.

Leslie Neilsen is the star and it's jarring to see him back then when he was extremely handsome and dignified-looking. Walter Pigeon co-stars as the mad scientist. Also co-starring is robby the robot; the robot with a sense of humor. I've often wondered if Leonard Nimoy modeled his Spock character on robby.

Good show from a pre-woke disney
7 September 2023
This was made in 1982 so they left out the liberal propaganda and just told the story of some people making a hot air balloon in the hope of flying over the wall separating poor and communist east germany from free and capitalist west.

The families involved made two balloons and that brings up a weakness in the flik. The balloons did not look homemade at all. They looked like commercial balloons you buy from companies selling such things. They were big and beautiful.

This is very much a family movie but that's ok. It's an exciting story and despite there being two families involved, there was not much focus on personal relationships. This movie moved.

Fairly good but two big problems
29 August 2023
This is all about the Roswell incident and what happened the next 50 years to three families involved . Good news is this was made 20 years ago so we don't get a bunch of woke propaganda. No female warriors or brilliant black scientists in this. They just told the story.

The first problem is the series is confusing. Lots of characters in the movie as men and women are replaced by sons and daughters who are then themselves replaced by sons and daughters. Since all three families are white it is tough to keep track of who is who. I don't like diversity, but this movie needed it. Should have been a white family and an asian one and maybe a hispanic one.

The other problem is the kid who narrates the movie and later becomes a character in the movie. She is played by Dakota Fanning and we're supposed to love her because she is cute and talks with a cute lisp. I don't like kids in movies, esp cute ones.

Didn't care for the ending either.

Great first st 3 hours. Rest just OK
29 July 2023
This 21 hour mini-series starts with the story of a french fur trader played by Robert Conrad. He is excellent as a small but super-tough man's man. His sidekick is played by the skinny pretty boy Richard Chamberlain who was miscast.

After that the series turned into a soap opera with lots of talking and a focus on relationships. At least we didn't get a bunch of woke PC liberal propaganda. This was made 45 years ago so we didn't have to endure female warriors or black scientists. Unfortunately, they did get woke on the indians and made them out to be saints. In fact indian culture was built around torture. Of both white men and other indians. A terrible people.

Lots of famous actors in this series though they''re mostly dead now. The great NFL tackle Alex Karras had a big part. Usually men like that are cast as brutes or thugs but Alex was cast as just a farmer. He had a big part and he was surprisingly good.

Richard Crenna was a memorable villain as a militia "colonel" who massacred a village of unarmed indians. The townspeople cheered him and he said "I take no credit. I am merely the humble right arm of God."

Last couple hours were very poor. No action - just talk about legal and environmental issues.

Disappointing
20 April 2023
Big problem is austin butler does NOT look like elvis. He's too skinny and has a real wimpish look to him. The real elvis looked surly and always had a sneer on his lips. He looked rebellious just standing there. Butler is just some pretty boy who died his hair jet black ( as did elvis, whose real hair color was brown) and claims he's the great elvis. Butler also portrayed elvis as a moody troubled woe-is-me type and that's not elvis either.

Tom Hanks had a big part as colonel tom parker and he was an ok villain though he looked grotesque. He wore a fat suit and had plastic jowls on his face that weighed like 20 pounds apiece.

Of course the music was great and i wish there had been more of it. Lots more. It sounded just like elvis and i suppose it was. I don't think butler sang the songs himself though the studio probably says he did.

Pretty good but a box office bomb.
1 April 2023
According to IMDB the world wide gross was a measly $300,000!! It's a somewhat boring but decent show about a teen getting an abortion. Plays almost like a documentary. Fortunately they left out the politics. It is not pro-choice or pro-life.

Sidney Flanigan is the star and it's hard to imagine anyone doing a better job of playing the part. She was 22 years old at the time and a beauty but they chose to portray her as just an ordinary moderately cute 17 year old who just wants her problem solved.

She is shuttled from agency to agency and forced to deal with a bunch of social workers who are kind and polite but asked a lot of nosy questions like "Does your boy friend beat you". She has to choose from the four choices that are the title of this movie. The red tape goes on and on kid just wants the ordeal to end.

In the middle of the movie the girl and her cousin visit an arcade that has a chicken that can play tic tac toe!!! I thought that can't be true, but an internet search says there are such birds.

The Day After (1983 TV Movie)

Unrelenting grimness
21 October 2022
Saw this when it was first shown and will always remember the scene of people driving along the freeway and seeing the mushroom clouds forming 5-10 miles away. What a scene.

Very important movie just like Doctor Stranglove but in an opposite way. Strangelove was a COMEDY about nuclear war but it made people think about how crazy it is to have all these nukes in the world . OTOH "The Day After" is no comedy - not by a long shot. Extremely serious movie that also makes people think.

Jason Robards was great as an ordinary guy trying to deal with all the mayhem. No heroes in this movie. Everybody knew they were going to die.

Most boring movie in history
9 August 2022
No action here as father tries to get his daughter out of a french prison. That's it. I should have rated it at 1 but i gave it a 4 because at least the movie is not WOKE.

I was sure it would be since damon is a super lib and a white-hating racist and man-hating sexist and america-hating scumball and gun-hating fascist (though he makes a fortune off the jason bourne series that glorifies gun violence.)

But i could see no lib propaganda in this film. In fact a little bit of the opposite. In one scene involving some arabs, they are portrayed as thugs. And damon's redneck character is portrayed as an ok guy.

Gee - I didn't know 100 pound girls can beat up 340 pound men
2 November 2020
More of the lame woke BS from hollywood. Towards the end this little girl is pounding the crap out of enormous bautista. We're not allowed to think men are in any way superior to the weaker sex!!! HAHAHA. 20 years from now people will laugh at films like this.

Best thing about the movie is bautista. He'a a huge man and makes a good action hero. Pierce brosnan seems to have two separate roles in the movie and they are unrelated. It's looks like they started out with one story and then changed it halfway thru. Makes no sense.

No story. A character study and pretty good
20 September 2020
Adam Sandler is fantastic playing big-mouth jewish con-man Howard Ratner, a loser with a gambling problem and a shrewish wife and tons of debt. Every time the debt collectors catch him you expect he'll get his legs broken but he talks , meaning lies, his way out of it. "Hey guys - I'll have your money on friday. No problem. It's a sure thing. It's me howard - you've known me for years."

He has chutzpah and bad luck and is actually kind of likeable. A real tour de force for Sandler and he deserved an oscar. He also has a girl friend who is gorgeous and she added to the movie. Very good up to the ending which made little sense. to me.

A BLACK police chief in France 1810? More liberal propaganda
14 August 2020
Other than that this is a very good telling of a story that has been done many times. I've seen maybe 5 versions of this and this is one of the best. Dominic West makes a good valjean though he's kind of small for playing the strongest man in the world. Liam Neeson, a very big man who played the part 20 years ago, is still the best valjean.

WOW - a movie that is NOT politically correct
14 August 2020
All the mexicans are evil creeps and the women are helpless. If you want to see 100 pound women beating up 300 pound men , this is not the movie for you. No liberal propaganda here.

The movie is ok - all about vengeance. You have to give stallone credit. Even at 73 he is still believable as an action star.

Very disappointed
20 July 2020
I expected a movie about the evil genius Joker of the batman movies but this was just about some pitiful loser. Phoenix did a fantastic job as the title character but people don't watch movies to see great acting. They want a great story and interesting characters. This had neither.

Good first year. Second year is liberal propaganda
13 July 2020
I really liked the first year but the following season i gave up after one hour. The series got WOKE and made all the men into simpering weaklings and all the women were strong assertive types like you never see in the real world. Women are the weaker sex - men are bigger and stronger and more aggressive and more confident and of course smarter - at least in technical fields which is the only kind of intelligence that counts. Men will always be the leaders in business and science while women will be the social workers and english teachers. I don't think even liberals like being fed this outrageous propaganda..

Near perfect documentary
7 January 2019
If this film was made today half of it would be some harvard elites sitting in chairs and blabbing about what it all means. More PC propaganda to make sure the peasants don't have improper thoughts.

But this was made in 1977 and it's 150 minutes of archival footage about hitler and his germany. No talking heads though there is of course a narrator to describe what we are looking at. Many many scenes of Hitler giving actual speeches. He speaks in german but there are subtitles. It's really cool to watch and hear this outrageous figure from the past.

Silly feminist propaganda
25 July 2018
This could have been a good show but the brits always have to preach the liberal hogwash to us. All the software wizards here are female even though in real life only around 10% of coders are female and they are mostly low-level and got the job thru affirmative action. The father of the family is portrayed as a loser who can't keep a job and his son is a moron while the daughter is a great software engineer!! HAHAHA

Other than that the show is ok as the robots are gaining consciousness and the humans are getting scared.

Surprisingly sympathetic view of white supremacists.
9 December 2017
Expected to see them portrayed as monsters but that was not the case at all. Most of them came across as good guys genuinely fighting for their country and their race and who can fault them for that. Hey - Abraham Lincoln was a white supremacist too and all his adult life he fought for returning blacks to Africa.

The story in the movie as not that good though. The FBI is trying to track down some canisters of radioactive material before the white nationalists use the stuff in a bomb. The FBI agent is played by a mousy little guy and his boss is some transgendered freak. Both are very unlikable.

The Dallas Wolf character is a thinly disguised Rush Limbaugh. "Hey, i'm just an entertainer."

Sensational
12 April 2017
How do you make an 8 hour movie where everyone knows the ending and NOT bore the audience? They did it here with this first rate production.

This is based on the book by Toobin that i read years ago and they stuck with the book and did not take sides. Simpson is neither monster nor martyr in this movie. Gooding plays him as a rather dim-witted man who may or may not have done it.

Everyone was excellent but esp the guy who played judge Ito. He physically looked just like him and also behaved just like the Ito i remember from 20 years ago. At the end of the movie, they said Ito never wrote a book about this case while everyone else in the case did.

Outstanding paranoia movie ----- mild spoiler
3 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Movie is set in a fictitious England in the late 20th century where most people live over 100 years. This is possible because the state has grown millions of human clones whose organs are harvested when they reach their 20s. If a normal person gets cancer or loses a leg or eye in a car crash, the state goes thru its genetic database for the clones and finds a good match to donate the needed organ. After 3 or 4 donations, the clone has lost too much and "complete" meaning die.

The clones are treated well in their short lives and given a good education and lead physically active lives. That may seem a waste of money but the state believes a healthy happy clone provides the best organs.

The movie follows three clones from the age of 10 to their late 20s. Two young women and the young man they both love. Like all the clones, they are rather placid about their lot in life and don't object as much as one would expect. Towards the end of the movie two of the clones get the nerve to ask about the ethics of this program and are bluntly told "If you ask the public to return to the dark ages, to lung cancer and breast cancer and motor-neuron diseases, they will simply say no." Most people will judge this a very depressing movie, but i liked it a lot.

Photographed stage play but pretty good
13 February 2012
Robert Powell plays jude, a self-educated young man who can't escape the role of stone mason in class-conscious england in the 1800s. He falls for his cousin Sue, a beautiful strong-willed woman played by Fiona Walker. The ups and downs of their romance make up most of the movie.

This is a 4 1/2 hour BBC soap and i don't like soaps but this one was OK. Fiona is a very attractive woman and added immensely to the movie. No action and not a very exciting film but i did get caught up in this sad story. In the last hour, an extremely disturbing thing happens. I didn't see it coming at all and it really knocked me over.

Good but simple-minded movie
24 June 2010
Of course the special effects are mind-blowing even on the little 16 inch computer screen i saw this film on. But the story is very much by the numbers. Another good guys versus bad guys story with no shades of gray. The Navi are all good and just about all the humans are bad. It reminds me of Star Wars from 30 years ago in how the story just doesn't grab you.

Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver have big parts but i didn't care for either of them. Both came across as boring liberal do-gooders. Steven Lang is great as the bad guy colonel. The girl who played Trudy was a real pain. Why does every action movie have to have a girl who tries to be just as macho as the men? Just more feminist propaganda and very irritating.

Still i did enjoy the movie.

Outstanding movie
29 October 2009
This came out the same time as Matrix and follows the same theme of simulated reality but this is much better. Not as much action but a more interesting story. Like all such movies it can get a little confusing so the viewer has to pay attention.

The movie is set in 1999 but much of the action occurs in a computer- simulated world of 1937. Craig Bierko is the star but really there are 4 co-stars in this film and they're all good. Bierko was great as Max Baer in the movie "Cinderella Man" and he's very good here too. The director tacks on a silly love story as usual and that bogs the movie down, but not terribly so.
