Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
Classic Trek
Alright, so I see there is quite a bit of a division on this one.
Some will like it, some will not. This is obviously a homage to TNG holodeck episodes. Where actors are given some free space to play out of character. Actually I'm pretty sure this was originally Patrick Stewards idea but anyway.
Some deliver good performances here, some do not. I especially liked Christina Chong, unfortunately she doesn't have much screen time on this one.
Doctor looked the least convincing. But I think this episode went well for the actor. Now that he is resolved, I hope we can see a better, more assured Doctor in the future. I think he is just getting into the 'Trek' mindset. This will be a good experience for him.
Looking forward to newer episodes !
The Wheel of Time (2021)
So far, so good
I just watched the first three episodes. The CGI and general action scene choreography was below my expectations. But other than that, they seem to have done a good job with the source material. The acting is good/ok, the writing is good enough. Some of younger cast will need some time to fit in, but it seems to be going in a good direction.
Other than that, will this be a game of thrones ? No. It's been a long time since I've read the source material, but as fas as I remember, it doesn't have characters like Tyrion who we pitied, but held at utmost respect, or Jaime, who we hated at first, but then marveled at his redemption, or Cercei, who we loved to hate. From what I remember, most characters in this series were one dimensional. It will be interesting to see if they will add some extra character development. Maybe someone in the white army ? We will see. Nice job Amazon !
Messiah (2020)
Definitely worth watching
If you have slightest interest in religions and history, this will captivate you. From the moment it begins. Until it ends you can not make up if the messiah is real or a charlatan. Is he the messenger of God ? Or a Russian agent ? There are explanations to everything he does. but the timings are uncanny. And he is very good at playing the messenger of God.
I hope Netflix continues this. This is the best thing they have done in recent years. Normally I would give this 8-9, but I will give it 10 due to cancelling and the unfair back leash it received due to its context.
The Wheel (2019)
Interesting plot, terrible screen writing
A lot of people have mentioned bad acting in the reviews, but I think the main problem with this movie is the terrible dialogues. After all, an actor can do just as much as hes given. Lead actor shows a lot of promise, David Arquette shows the worst performance, but to his defense he's been handled the most ridiculous lines. I think this can be worth to give a shot if you are into dystopian movies.
Another Life (2019)
Cringe cringe cringe
First Contact ! BSG vibes ! Interspace travel !
I was very hyped when I got the notification for this. But unfortunately it seems it will be frustrating. I am just 30 mins into the first episode and I am not sure if I will be able to go on.
First of all, the team which is sent to space to represent Earth is consisting of a bunch whiny hot blooded kids which doesn't know up from down. Then they put an experienced officer over their regular leader and instantly they get a mutiny in their hands. (I am not sure if counts as a spoiler because all this happens in the first 30 mins of the first episode). This is just unbelievable. The show takes a flexible approach to some scientific impossibilities, FTL travel, instant communication between relativistic distances, artificial gravity, etc which I am comfortable with. But their extreme mess up with the crew selection, casual atmosphere breaks the immersion. I mean, they are going for interspace travel they don't even chairs in the command room ? Except for the hammock in the lounge where some useless teen b*tch-mouths everyone on the ship.
Anyway, I will continue for the sake of Starbucks and will update this review if necessary.
