Soldier's Girl (2003)
Beautiful Love Story
Since Soldier's Girl is based on true story, I was very shocked about the storyline. I could not believe Calvin killed Barry, and he did not show any sense of regret. Also, there are some issues in this film need the society to focus on. I think this film is trying to tell people that do not discriminate homosexual in the society. Since Sarah is transgender, Barry's sexuality is being questioned. Nobody can really know what Barry's sexuality is, and he accepts Sarah as a woman. I think the army should not discriminate homosexual, so the tragedy will not happen in Barry's case. This make-up of this film is fantastic since Sarah's breast was made by cosmetic. I think it is definitely deserve for the Best Make-up Award. This film is only appealing for adult because there are some violent scenes in the end, so it is too scary for kid to watch it.
Princesa (2001)
The Touching Love Story
Since Princesa is based on true story, I could understand how transgender is struggle in the society. I think European film is quite different from the other American films that I have watched, and European is likely to focus on sexual scenes. Since Fernanda is prostitute, the mood of the film is dark. The relationship between Fernanda and Gianni is quite touching although it is an affair. Their love story adds the brightness for the plot. It is interesting to see Gianni regards Fernanda as a "real" woman even though Gianni discovers Fernanda is physically male. I think it is amazing for a straight man to love transgender woman in this deep way. In my opinion, the theme of the film is not to discriminate transgender people in the society. If the society will not judge the people such as Fernanda, they could have more opportunity to find a normal job to earn money for their need. I think this film is appealing for only adult since there are too many sexual scenes. It is not appropriate for kids to watch it.
Normal (2003)
Love is the Power
The storyline of Normal is innovative, and it is certainly a good film. The acting is fantastic, so I could enjoy watching the film. I think this film is different from other genre's film since acting is vivid and the storyline is unique. Although the issue in the film is a little heavy, some of the scenes in the film use a lighter way to portray it. The way of how Ruth tells his co-worker that he is going do the sex operation is amusing; therefore, mood of the film is consider not too heavy. Also, the make- up and costumes of Ruth is very natural for me. Ruth might be considering as transvestite before doing the sex-change operation; however, Ruth's make- up and costume is not too exaggerated. As a result, the film deserved the Emmy Award (Make Up). In my opinion, the theme of the film is love, and people can overcome many difficult situations by the power of love. Also, family stands an extremely important influence in everyone's life. Irma's love and support for Ruth illustrates love can actually overcome the difficulties in your life. I think this film is appealing to everyone since the mood in the film is light.
Beautiful Boxer (2003)
The Beautiful Trans-gender Film
Beautiful boxer is a great trans-gender film, and I enjoy watching the film very much. Since it is based on true story, I can understand trans-gender people's mind and behavior more. The way of the film portrays is amazing, and Toom has perfectly shows his struggle of being a professional boxer or a "real" woman. Toom has wanted to become a girl since he was young, and it is surprised to see that he could play boxing in such a professional level. Since boxing is extremely manly sport, it is hard to imagine a man who is feminine in the ring. However, Toom does not care how other people's point of view and decide to wear make-up in the ring. In addition, he has become a famous boxer in Thai. The film is trying to tell people that do not give up easily for your dream and desire. In addition; society should respect trans-gender people's ability and right. This film is recommended for everyone since the film is based on true story, and people should learn how to accept and respect the people such as Toom in the society.
Just Like a Woman (1992)
Great Transvestite Film
Just like a Woman is a comedy drama, and I like this film very much. The storyline is very interesting and unique. It is my first time to watch transvestite movie, and some of the scenes touches me. I love when Gerald tells Monica that he actually enjoy wearing girls make up and clothes. The relationship between them also impressed me a lot. It shows the tolerance of their love. The concept in this film might reflect part of the society nowadays since we can see many transvestites' artists and people in the TV show. This film proves that the transvestite people are not weird, and Gerald actually reveals his great ability in his career. It is interesting to see that Gerald seems happier when he is wearing woman's costume and make up. However, he is not bisexual or homosexual. The message in the film clear reach to the audience that there might be many transvestite people around us. Since they dress normal outfit in the day time, people cannot judge by their appearance to tell if they are transvestite. I admire how Monica encourages Gerald to go out with his women outfit, and it illustrates that there love is deep and different from other couple. Overall, I recommend that everyone should watch this film; Adrian Pasdar shows his best acting in the character.
Gazon maudit (1995)
Exciting Lesbian Film
French Twist is a French comedy film in 1995. I enjoy watching the film, and I think some of the scenes in the films are innovative compare to similar films. The film deserved some of the award such as best actor and best director since the main characters acting is vivid and entertaining. The idea of the story is interesting and deep. I think the director have a unique way to show emotions between Marijo and Loli. There is one scene when Marijo and Loli taking bath together, and this scene reveals the intense love of lesbian. Also, Laurent's emotions and attitude towards Loli is quite complex after Marijo involve in their relationship. Especially when Laurent agree to have sex with Marijo while Loli is away, I think that scene is a little exaggerated and awkward. At that moment, I feel sympathy for Marijo because no matter how much she wanted to become a man, however, physically she cannot win Laurent. It shows that man and woman are still very different in many ways. Overall, this film is trying to tell audience that love does not against sex, and love is the most powerful thing in the world. Since this film is comedy, this gender issue is also interesting. I think this type movie will appeal both to heterosexual and homosexual.
