It's hard to say which of The Nun and The Nun II that is the best or worst. Both are okay horror movies. The biggest flaw with The Nun II is that the film does not build up excitement and horror very well. You get to see Valak (the nun/demon) from the very first scene in that church, and that was one of the best parts. After that it's just horror scene after horror scene after horror scene, with slim to none build up... The pacing is just all over the place. The acting was okey. The atmosphere was also okey.
In this movie, Valak can possess people, which made the movie less scary, because then the focus landed on those possessions instead, and you saw less of the actual demon Valak as the nun. The people that got possessed looked more like zombies, and was not as interesting. Valak is a very creepy and terrifying demon, but they don't seem to know how to use the nun properly. They show way too much way too fast, with a lot of horror cliches. Valak was perfectly used in The Conjuring 2, and only in some scenes in The Nun and The Nun II.
In the third act the movie transitions to more action with less tension and horror. We get introduced to the actual Devil as well, and not in a particularly good or terrifying way. The Devil felt like a mix of a goat and a monkey, and was not scary at all. It did not create much chaos and suffering either, and just felt very weak and stupid before it disappeared. The ending was also a bit disappointing and cliche in my opinion, and the movie indicates that there will be a third movie. I did enjoy this movie though, and got scared a couple of times (by jump scares), but I was not impressed. I hope that the third movie will be better.
