A French Mistress (1960)
One of my favourite rainy Sunday afternoon films
This used to be on TV quite often on weekends when I was younger. It never appears now because it's in b&w. It's a lovely gentle but cheeky comedy in the traditional of The Lavender Hill Mob and Passport to Pimlico, with many familiar faces, including James Robertson Justice and Cecil Parker. It has a rather racy proposition that appears part way through the film, which might have been quite shocking for audiences at the time and might still be shocking for some people today, if it were true.
The only casting issue is Ian Bannen as the romantic lead. A bit strange. But it still doesn't detract from this lovely little film which is a real joy.
Only Connect: Lapsed Psychologists v Country Walkers (2008)
Steve Lamb on Only Connect
Steve Lamb was my A level English teacher. He always was a bit of a bighead. I was pleased to see that his team lost in the quarter finals as I always thought he was a was a rubbish teacher.
Hey Steve! You always ignored me in class because you didn't think I was one of the clever ones, but I answered more questions than you. So who's clever now?!
Apart from that, i really enjoy the programme. There are no flashing lights and gimmicks. You just have to pit your wits against the teams. There are not enough intelligent quizzes on TV. Most just ask questions about celebrities or TV and film, and whilst these can be entertaining too, you sometimes need something more to exercise "ze little grey cells".
