The Act (2019)
Too long, but interesting series
I'm not a person who normally likes true crime but this case is so fascinating that i had to watch The Act.
The series went into a lot of details about the case. But I have no idea what is real and what is fake. Is something that happens in the series...is it real or artificial.,? Who knows. They have this disclaimer on the episode "While, this program is based on real events, some scenes and characters have been dramatized or fictionalized."
The series was too long. There were many slow sections of the series that were there to reinforce what happened. But it got redundant. The series should have been five or six episodes, not eight.
The acting with superb.
Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee was wonderful. She was a constant, ominous presence that was overpowering.
Joey King as Gypsy Rose was stellar. She captured the essence of a young woman trapped in circumstances out of her control.
Chloë Sevigny as the neighbor Mel was a perfect stand-in for the viewer. Her skepticism was reasonable at first and she doubted Dee Dee's honesty, just like we would. Her body language was excellent. From the start, standing there, with her arms crossed in front of her we knew exactly what she was thinking.
But then she became more trusting, and more gullible, just like everyone surrounding the Blanchard family did.
This was a decent series. I just wish it was three hours shorter!
The Jane Mysteries: Inheritance Lost (2023)
A bit below average for a Hallmark movie.
The acting, the script, the directing- all miss the mark.
I wanted to like this. I watched it in January. I was burned out on two months of Hallmark Christmas movies and was looking forward to a good mystery. Unfortunately this wasn't it.
This wasn't cringe-worthy it just wasn't good enough to hold my attention.
The acting seemed stilted. It was wooden and lacked commitment. Perhaps if there was better directing the director could have gotten better performances from the actors.
I wonder why they greenlit this project because the script is slow moving.
It wasn't the worst Hallmark movie I've seen, it just wasn't very interesting.
Found (2023)
A disappointing thriller that isn't very thrilling.
I really wanted to like this show, but it falls short.
The show is a procedural. Each week there is a missing person the team tries to locate. And the series has an ongoing story about the man who originally abducted the protagonist when she was a high schooler.
The missing person of the week premise would have been enough. It's a shame that they stuck storyline of the man who abducted Gabi when she was a child. That turned an interesting crime of the week into an interesting series.
I normally enjoy Kelli Williams, but she seems wasted in this series. Her back story is interesting but it just hangs there.
I'm a Mark-Paul Gosselaar fan and he's good in this. He's chilling as a criminal. But that's just not enough to carry this show.
The rest of the team who help find the missing people don't add anything to the series. That isn't due to the acting. The writing just doesn't give them anything interesting to contribute.
This show is a miss.
Tell Me Lies (2022)
A Gen Z soap opera
I was so bored with this show. I gave up after 4 episodes. I don't see why some people give it decent ratings and reviews.
The characters are horrible and it was impossible to care what happened to any of them. They cast very attractive actors in this but good looking actors does not make a difference when the plot drags on and on...
Is this how college students actually act? If so, the nation is doomed as they graduate college and take their place in society.
This wasn't engaging at all. I suspect the writers realized that so they kept throwing in sex scenes to distract from how sloooow moving the plot was.
So, where do I go to get that time back I wasted on this show?
Culprits (2023)
This is a waste of time, find something better to watch.
Do not waste your time on this dribble. This story was tedious and felt like it would never end. There was not enough plot to sustain eight episodes. It should've been done in three or four episodes.
The story was told in two separate timelines. That was completely unnecessary. That's been done before and it's been done much better.
I believe the main issue was with the script. Whoever green lit this should have their head examined..
The acting was deadpan and I felt sorry that the director didn't require more from the actors.
I'm quite annoyed at myself for hanging in there because it just didn't get better. And the ending was completely a waste of time.
Magic in Mistletoe (2023)
Slow moving Christmas romance
The movie was rather slow moving. But it was your typical Hallmark Christmas romance film so that's to be expected.
Most of the acting was average-Except the woman who played April. She was very good. It never felt like she was "acting."
Once again, there is a Hallmark movie in a small town with some Christmas festival going on. I don't know why they came up. Can't come up with better plot lines.
And it sure was slow moving. I wished I could fast forward.
It had your typical sappy ending. All is well with the world in a Hallmark movie. The drama from the conflict is insignificant in these movies. But it doesn't matter. This is like drinking a cup of hot cocoa in a small town in December. Soothing, comfortable, and basically unimportant.
Christmas on My Mind (2019)
A good premise but slow moving plot
I like the idea of a sort of "While You Were Sleeping" plot. But the story was slow moving.
It had all the elements of a Hallmark Christmas movie- winter festival, small town, attractive people, children that tug on your heartstrings.
But it seemed to drag.
The conflict is that Lucy wake up with no memory, she ends up in the small town where she grew up, of course when the town is having a week-long winter festival.
Her ex-fiancé is there and there is a "mystery" of why she broke of the engagement two years ago.
The make things interesting Lucy has a current beau and a high-powered life in the big city,
All the elements that should make for a fun romp through the winter wonderland of a Christmas romance. But something about it is flat. It just seems to drag.
The Santa Summit (2023)
A missed connections Christmas romance
This is a typical Hallmark Christmas movie. It's a simple romance that is set during the Christmas season. The plot was a little thin, and a bit repetitive as the characters looked for the lost connection, but the acting was better than many of these Christmas romance films.
The script showcased female friendship with clever conversations that moved the plot forward. A simple plot might become tedious. But the witty lines fom the characters moved the film along and prevented boredom.
The characters were likable and the plot of the search for love was the typical Hallmark plot. It wasn't a challenging film; it had a safe feel to it. It was like a comfy warm sweater on a cold, snowy afternoon. One thing it's didn't include was characters drinking hot cocoa or cider. That was a relief.
The Christmas Detective (2023)
Stiff acting detracts from the movie.
I really wanted to like this. It combines two things I enjoy, detective mysteries and Christmas. But the acting, especially by the supporting cast, was so bad it was distracting.
I saw it on the Oprah Winfrey Network channel.
The mystery was a good idea. The plot was okay. But the writing was obvious and the acting left a lot to be desired.
Christmas movies on Hallmark, Lifetime and OWN are usually pretty much all the same. That's why it's fun with they mix the Christmas romance story with a mystery. The plot mostly did that. But the very stiff acting (esp by the actor who played the Gunner role) detracted from the movie.
Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time (2017)
Good documentary, but about 20 minutes too long
I won't comment on the politics that other reviewers did. That belongs on Facebook, not here.
This captures the excitement of the campaign. I love how they used music to heighten the drama. The film captured how angry half of America was. And the end captured the poignant sadness that the democrats had at the outcome and the joy that Trump voters had.
The only thing I'd change would be to cut some of the middle part which showed the long campaign. That was repetitive and probable only interesting to political wonks.
I watched the series The Circus. This is a nice ending to that series. It wraps up the crazy election.
