Something in the Water (2024)
Here we go again
Surly if your a film maker you would have watched other films of this ilk. Either because you like those sort of movies and it inspired you to try something different or you've done some research by watching or reading stories about being stranded with sharks. But alas it's the same old trope.
To be honest, it's fairly limited using this sub-genre. But with some clever thinking you could add some twists or tricks and you could make it a bit more interesting. For example they did have some basic equipment that they could have used in a clever way, but it is quickly forgotten and never mentioned or used again.
The research on the behaviour of sharks is wholly inadequate and inaccurate. Again, with a bit of thinking you could have applied real world experiences and observations in to the story, but nothing.
This movie ended up being a bit of a.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Refreshing!
This is probably the best horror movie I've seen for a while, especially in the found footage sub-genre.
Saying that, it's far from perfect. What it does get right is the era framing, 70's feel. Or at least how I imagine 70's US late night light entertainment.
It's does seem to get a bit confused on what it wants to be, campy, serious, horror drama. Dastmalchian is great as the lead character, along with Auteri chewing the scenery in places. The others are so so, especially Bazzi and whilst he caps it's up, his acting is a bit hit or miss, especially his Australian, American and 'foreign' accent.
I wish we had more of Lilly who came across innocent/unhinged before going full on.
Overall this is a good movie but just feels a little, unfinished, a little unpolished.
Arthur the King (2024)
If you know, you know
If you've ever had a dog and you've had a profound, unspoken bond and you'll know if you know, you will connect with this movie, especially if you've been through all the trials of life with him/her.
Yes, it's tropey, yes it's predictable and yes you've seen it before but it does have enough of a difference to enjoy and relate
Don't go in to this movie thinking it's unique or particularly thrilling, more light drama with some chuckles and a single scene that's a bit trope bending but nice and surprising to see.
The acting is pretty generic but convincing, especially marks chats with Arthur.
The growth in the 'family' dynamic is obvious but nice.
If you want something accessible, non threatening then this probably won't be a waste of time for you, especially if you've had that unspoken bond with your best friend.
Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)
If you are having trouble sleeping...
.... Watch this.
I actually fell asleep, during the table scene.
Both movies are incredibly formulaic and tropey.
There are some nice visuals but it feels like an incredible waste of vision.
I like thinking about the details of movies but for the love of me I don't get this back to basics life style of the farming, using manual labour except for the anti gravity carts.
And when did that lady have a chance to crochet for each of the heroes especially after a full day of farming.
So much of the story doesn't make any sense, even when attempting to cookie cutter from other movies.
It's like they copy/pasted and then let a cat walk across the keyboard.
Damaged (2024)
Miss opportunity
Wow, what a disappointment. I was expecting something like Insomnia or Se7en and got a Scottish Miami Vice.
Such potential, amazing scenery, great accents, diverse and different culture, Sam' Jack'. Non of those used
This movie wastes all those potentials as well as being badly written, the way the Scottish police works is massively misrepresented (detectives don't carry guns for a start), lack of pathos, very little character development/building.
The story doesn't make any sense, the reactions to bloody, grim murders is limp wristed, no matter how used to it you are, you would still balk at seeing it.
The over zealous reactions to potential suspects is uncalled for and without reason. There's no back story to why either. The red herrings are bland and obvious. I don't feel any connection between the murders and the killer.
I'm pretty sure an American cop could not or would not just pop over to Scotland if there is potential evidence that leads them their, especially with a gun. And then meet up with an old partner that just seems to be working over there. A real 'oh, hi Mark' moment
Again, another awesome foreign actor Vincent Cassel, under utilised with a crappy part. And you could tell his heart wasn't in it, he seemed relived when it was all over. Come to think of it, Sam too. I'm guessing he does really like golf and he was in the UK in 2001 for the bellow par The 51st State and decided 'I've not played golf in the UK for 23 years, time for a production company to pay me for a golf holiday. 'Ching
Back to the movie.....
Very few establishing shots, great Scottish actors, under used and not given anything to do really. No exploration of the Scottish culture, not even an obligatory, stereo typical, conversation on whisky/scotch, fried mars bars, driving on the wrong side, Scottish not liking the English. This list goes on and I know it's very trope, but you could get clever with it, just nothing. Och Aey.
Just, by the numbers, not clever, schlock
What the hell is going on?
#float (2022)
These guys are definitely 'floaters' 🌊🛶 💩
Being a horror movie following the tropes of this genre there's an understandable formula of hating some characters and liking some others.
But this movie breaks this formula by making you hate everyone, literally, no one has and redeeming features.
The enjoyment is gained from everyone getting some sort of comeuppance.
No one seems to really care for anyone else.
.. Kid goes missing, no one really cares, except for the god awful 'parents'
... friend disappeared under water accompanied with a pool of blood, oh well, let's keep floating and chatting and drinking.
The pacing is weird, audio awful almost like it's all done in ADR, acting is passable but made worse with the awful dialogue.
Whilst the production quality is reasonable, don't let this deceive you in to thinking it's an average film, it's just not.
One this is for sure, everyone of them are certainly 'floaters' 🌊 💩
Sam & Kate (2022)
Lovely, Simple
No expectations, no trailer, little information, romantic comedy.
This movie just popped up, usually I have no interest in this sort of movie and the only draw to it was DH.
For a slow burner the pacing was nice, Goldilocks even.
It's a simple story that would reflect many audience members lives or if not, would have a familiar ring to it for at least one of its story threads.
It doesn't batter you over the head with its themes or narrative and thankfully let's you fill in the blanks and work out the context and conclusions.
The actors are gentle the dialogue is light and witty. Don't expect head thrown back laughter but chuckles and titters, in a good way.
I have done no research but I would be surprised if this didn't come from a small book or short story, possibly an off broadway or festival play. Though I'm probably wrong!
For a lazy warm Sunday afternoon go watch and have a glass of wine!
The Porter: The Untold Story at Everest (2020)
Pretty but empty
Really wanted to love this documentary going in to it and whilst the scenery was lovely and the general idea that a porters life is a hard one, nothing new was really discovered.
I understand the idea was for the young white western man to challenge himself, I found the experience a bit empty.
More frank, open discussions with the native porters and their families would have been eye opening I'm sure, along the lines of the old timer he spoke to and how they where treated 10 or so years back by the local populace.
I'm hoping he donated his earnings to the other porters and didn't remove the opportunity for a local porter to earn some money for the season.
I can see potential and I hope this inspires more from this team, just with a bit more content and interest in local culture and work life.
Blair Witch (2016)
You have to ask yourself.....
..... why..... why does this movie about nothing.... exist?
I've struggled with the story and the logic. Don't get me wrong, it's a horror movie and logic is not supposed to surpass the very basic premise. But this movie really does take the p!ss and I want a refund on my brain cells.
