Mail Order Wife (2004)
You guys do know this movie is a MOCK-umentary, right?
I've read some comments here that seem to suggest the authors thought this movie was a documentary. But it isn't. It's a brazen, ballsy comedy DISGUISED as a documentary.
I found this movie to be outrageously, wickedly funny and in the vein of the TV series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Also, it has an unexpected amount of intelligence in its statements about American life versus life in the rest of the world, relationships, sex, and love(or lack thereof).
Beware all those who are easily offended: This movie is NOT for you. For those of you who like your comedy darker than a cup of black coffee, enjoy!
The Mangler Reborn (2005)
"Mangler" Sequel Genuinely Works Some of the Time
This movie unsettled and creeped me out a little, in spite of its problems.
I find it more challenging to appreciate a movie than to make fun of it. I save that for special occasions, like the "Omen" remake. So, briefly, here are the problems I had with the film: Some of the dialogue, makeup effects and sound effects in this film are hokey. But apart from that and I found no other major problems with the film, and I think it did its job.
Here was what I liked about "The Mangler Reborn": It has a genuinely claustrophobic setting, a creepy soundtrack, and a nasty attitude. Also of note, a majority of its blood, gore and dialogue is effective. The acting is even pretty good for a direct to video feature. Plus, Reggie Bannister's in it, and damn it, I like him.
6 stars out of 10. You might like it.
Duck! The Carbine High Massacre (1999)
Great movie to watch with sick and twisted friends
I was, at first, reluctant to show this movie to my friends. i was afraid they'd think it was a tasteless, shoddily made, horrible movie (Which it is, but more on that later). then, once i told them about it, they were very eager to see it. So i showed it to them, and we laughed our asses off.
This movie is very cheaply made (On sub-porno quality video), with some of the worst acting i've ever seen. It's cheap, crude, and not at all slick. but that's the only way i can imagine a project like this working. it wouldn't be funny at all if it were slickly made. That is the true beauty of this film. My one gripe: the carnage comes too late in the film. but up to that point there are numerous comic gems, so this movie is still worth seeing.
The Convent (2000)
A Great Bad Movie
If you rented this movie expecting scares, you made a big mistake (I know the trailer is misleading). It is NOT MEANT TO BE SCARY. However, this film IS possibly the best splatter comedy to be released in years; it politically incorrect, irreverent, outrageous, contains gobs of gore (including one of the most outrageous openings i've ever seen), and makes fun of EVERYONE (cheerleaders, jocks, frat rats, pledges, cops, nuns, priests, and pretentious goths). Granted, the effects are cheap, but in a good way, and the performances are off the wall, but also in a good way. It works almost like a retro 80's horror comedy. how could i not endorse this movie? it is fun, required viewing for fans of gory horror comedies.
Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
In the film's defense... (WARNING: SPOILERS)
...it could have been a lot worse. sure, i've heard the reviews, and some of it is true: ashley lawrence is barely seen, and the plot summary on the box does not match the actual film at all. The first three quarters of the film hardly contain pinhead, and are, for the most part, hallucinations.
But what some other reviews failed to acknowledge. For one, that "hellseeker" is (for me a rather welcome) departure from the usual formula of the series. Let's face it, guys, the first four "hellraiser" films (i can't say the same for "inferno," as i have not seen it yet) are basically the same; pinhead is resurrected, lots of people get ripped to shreds and/or are exposed to profoundly disturbing physical and psychological tortures. after a while, doesn't this get a bit predictable? i know i was actually interested to see what was going on when kirsty, our heroine, disappeared very early on in the film. She was the main actor advertised, and they made her go away so the story could go move a new dirction. This is not the first film to use this deceptive rechnique (remember janet leigh in "psycho"?). Now, don't get me wrong. "Psycho" was an absolute masterpiece, and i am by no means elevating "hellseeker" to its level, it is merely something to think about.
Also, i enjoyed many of the hallucination sequences and found them to be alternately eerie, horrific, and tantalizing. this film toys with reality in a very interesting way; it is structured like a waking nightmare, where lines of dreams and reality are blurred, and anything is possible. as though someone mixed "hellraiser" with "last year at marienbad," only easier to sit through.
