Fun in Acapulco (1963)
Typical Elvis movie.
Light hearted happy go lucky but troubled womanizer, trapeze artist & singer turned cliff diver? It's fun to see these movies 50 years later. I understand that Elvis got very tired of this formula & wanted more serious roles. It's also easy to understand why the movie executives were reluctant to do that. Boy like looks & THE Voice. As usual, they stick with what worked & what was safe. One hit song from the otherwise forgettable sound track. Although I found this to be a very silly movie, to be fair it was a very different era & you have to consider who the target audience was. As always, pretty girls abound. Include a fight scene with a bad guy who becomes a friend Later & cut, print it. Next very similar script please. That's entertainment 60's style.
McLintock! (1963)
On my top 10 Corny list.
Got nothing else to do so let's make a comedy, drama, Shake-a-Speer rip off western on the cheep so we can recoup some of the money we lost from the Alamo disaster. Some great film making came out of this era but this one is not to be taken seriously. So light hearted & slap stick, it just struck me as stupid. Were the audiences so pedestrian back then that they bought the John Wayne as the most high, all wise Character he portrays. There is nothing to like about Maureen O'Hara's character either. In fact, I couldn't find any likable characters. I did feel sorry for those Indian extra's. They looked really bored. The good guys always win but sometimes the audience looses. But just stick in a happy ending, wait I missed the ending. Had to do fold laundry or something like that.
Bus Stop (1956)
Not the way I want to remember Monroe.
Just saw this Movie for the first time a few days ago. All the yelling gave me a headache. Marilyn looked bloated and unhealthy, especially in the bus when she sat down next to the younger Hope Lange who had a normal looking complexion. All that white makeup made her look like a ghost. After all the film is almost 60 years old. The culture has changed a lot. The boorish but likable hooligan is not exactly in vogue these days. Did I say likable. There's nothing likable about this cowboy. Its just too unbelievable even for 1957. In my opinion, the sweet last scene in this movie is not enough to save the painful 95% of the time taken up but the unbelievable over the top acting & lousy screen play. Sorry but I was not entertained.
Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940)
Hollywood at it's best.
1940 was a hard year. The great depression was at it's Zenith. 25% unemployed. This is a story of a truly good man. In fact, A.L. is always rated in the top 5 presidents. I believe he was one of the top 5 greatest men of all time despite the lives lost in the Civil war (The War between the States). Of course there is artistic license here, but this is story telling. Story telling at it's finest.Film making, Acting and production, Magnificent. With no car chases, special effects, Digital renderings, Blood, Sex or Aliens! This film, when it was released gave people hope for the future. I'm 49 and I still get emotional when I watch it. It was a momentous time in Human history when it was happening. Then as now America, remains the last greatest hope for freedom in the world. Is there another? I don't think so. He was elected by the people. He did not Murder his way to power. He upheld the constitution not overthrow it. How could Abe Lincoln know the Nation he would go to war to save and free a people in the process be the lone super power in the world some day. A Nation of laws not men. Think of that when you see this film. It may move you as well. LWA
