Remembrance (2011)
10/10
Beautiful, Sorrowful, and Stunning
21 May 2014
I stumbled across this gem of a film on Netflix, and it had four out of five stars, so I figured I would give it a shot. I am so glad I took the time to watch it. The storyline is nothing short of amazing, and after viewing the movie, I did some research, and found that it is based on a true story. Visually stunning, with a beautiful score to match, Remembrance kept me hypnotized for two hours solid. Considering I am a bit of a critic when it comes to love stories, I was shocked by how powerfully moving this one was. It broke my heart in two. I won't go into details about the plot, because frankly, I think this is one of those works of art that should be experienced and not described. I will just say, watch it for yourself. It is well worth the time.

Amazing Story of Growth and Human Spirit
9 March 2014
I absolutely loved this movie. I am always attracted to films that chronicle characters who go through dramatic personal growth, and Dallas Buyers club delivered in a way that was both touching and heartbreaking. A man starts out with not a single care for his own well being, let alone that of others, and when he is faced with the very epitome of the human condition, and by baby steps that begin with selfish motivations, he grows into something so much more to so many people. In fighting his own battle, helps others to fight theirs, and eventually he becomes a better man. Mathew's acting is brilliant, as well as Jared Leto's portrayal of an emotionally damaged, hard-shelled transgender person living with AIDS. I literally did not see Jared Leto at all while watching the movie, because he quite literally became the character. In a day and age where movies can equal big bucks, and some are produced just for that purpose, whether they are quality films or not, I was caught off guard by how great Dallas Buyers Club was. I was especially skeptical going in, considering that so many just plain strange films have won the major categories at the Oscars in the last decade or so. Violence for the sake of violence, gimmicky film making, and surreal, shallow plot lines have ruled at the Academy Awards in past years...Django Unchained being one prime example, in my opinion. But, this film gave me what I like best, which is a great story that gripped my emotions and made me think!

Dracula (2013–2014)
9/10
Great "Steampunk" Re-imagining of a Classic
20 January 2014
Dracula started out slow, building the character's history, and steadily building several elaborate plot lines together. But, the drama and vampy violence also continued to grow along with the well developed characters. So, now I am totally hooked on this show. I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dracula. He is absolutely brilliant in those emotionally unstable roles, so flying from a complete and bloody rage, right into the soft, tender moments he has with Mina feels natural and real. I highly suggest this show, even though it apparently had some bad viewership ratings for a while there. I have heard rumors that it may not be coming back for a second season, but I certainly hope that isn't the case. The season finale had me poised and "dying" for more.

Excellent, Imaginative Ode to the World of Middle Earth *spoiler alert*
17 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely LOVED this movie. The Hobbit is and always has been my favorite book, and I am a total nerd over the 1977 animated version. So, I have been on my toes waiting for Desolation to come out. Needless to say, I was not at all disappointed. Jackson made brilliant decisions about what to add to, and what to skim over in the film. The scene where Gandalf confronts the Necromancer, and his true identity is revealed through a succession of a never ending eyes within the great eye made my hair stand on end. Benedict Cumberbatch was a perfect choice as Smaug. His booming, growling voice really impressed Smaug's ego to the audience. And, Weta absolutely blew me away with their design for Smaug. He was enormous and frightening, yet beautifully so at the same time. I saw the movie on Imax 3D, and it was beyond impressive. My husband and I left grinning from ear to ear, and wishing the next installment of the trilogy was already available. As a fan, I honestly could not wish for more. It was funny, scary, romantic, adventurous, and packed with thrilling and fun action scenes. It was well worth the 18 dollar ticket costs, and I will happily line up and pay the same for the next film.

Warm Bodies (2013)
8/10
Surprisingly Refreshing, Funny, and Heartfelt
29 June 2013
When I first heard the premise of Warm Bodies, I thought that it could be a serious flop. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my initial thoughts were completely wrong. This film has a refreshing plot that is really quite different than anything else I have seen. Not only is it quirky and extremely funny it places, but it also carries a great message of open-mindedness and acceptance. It has a romantic storyline that keeps the viewer rooting for the two lead roles the entire movie, who both happen to have great chemistry together. They keep the romance quite lively (hardy har har). Strange as it feels at first, you find yourself hoping the zombie gets his girl.I found Warm Bodies to be very entertaining, and quite charming.

Da Vinci's Demons (2013–2015)
9/10
Very Entertaining Fantasy Series
14 June 2013
I am absolutely convinced that the negative reviews on here are all from a group of maybe three people, and those people have an anus the size of a pinhole. I say this because the negative reviews I have read stated the author either gave up after the first ten minutes (obviously not enough time to gauge the quality) of the show, or were page long rants about historical accuracy.I myself am a huge history buff. I enjoy a film that sticks to the facts, if that is what it set out to do to begin with. But, Da Vinci's Demon's never claimed to be a historical documentary, and I never expected it to be. It is a fantasy series, fantasy being the key word. So, though the real Da Vinci is obviously the inspiration, the Leonardo of the show is not a historical carbon copy. The characters' motivations are logical, and they are believable, so it is really not important in this case that the show sticks to the exact history. Plenty of movies stray from exact history and still manage to be engaging and well done. That is the beauty of artistic license. Since, I have rebutted the argument that historical inaccuracies make Da Vinci's Demons a "bad" series, I want to talk about my feelings on the show itself. The characters are engaging, especially Leonardo. His need to love his father is offset by his hatred for his father's conservative beliefs and his bitter feelings toward his son. Tom Riley does a great job of portraying the genius artist who often verges on insanity. Though his intimate group of friends are loyal beyond reason, one always feels the vast space Leonardo's unbelievable intellect creates between him and those he loves. The writers make him feel human by giving him a brilliant sense of humor, and a somewhat self deprecating personality. In other words, while the writers make it clear he is an exceptional individual and above the norm, they also make him relatable. Check the show out! I've been a huge fan of The Tudors and Game of Thrones, and I would put Da Vinci's Demons at that level....and it is nice to watch a lighter show to take a break from every character I love dying horribly. :)

Bag of Bones (2011– )
7/10
Well Done Adaptation of King
18 February 2012
I am an avid King fan. I have read a majority of his novels, and I have always loved his TV and Screen adaptations, even the cheesy older ones. King himself has always had a tongue-and-cheek view of many his screen plays, and I have always approached them the same way. After all, the horror genre is suppose to be fun. So, I think critics of this, and his other TV mini series have lost a lot of the fun of the thing. I myself thought A&E's version of Bag of Bones was well done and entertaining. It follows the book pretty closely, though as usual, some changes has been made. I enjoyed Pierce Brosnon as Noonan, and He was believable as the widowed writer. Overall it was a positive watching experience. The only thing I didn't enjoy were all the commercial interruptions, so If you can T-vo it, or if the eventually release it on DVD, catch it that way.

Well acted, riveting story that revives love for Shakespeare...
16 February 2012
I enjoyed this movie immensely. If you are looking for exact historical accuracy, it will probably not be your cup of tea. But, if you want to watch a film with breathtaking sets, costumes, and a story line that reminds the viewer of why Shakespeare's works are some of the most touching and compelling human stories of all time, then Anonymous will be as enjoyable for you as it was for me. I feel like those viewer's who concentrated so heavily on the question of who actually wrote his works missed the over all theme and message of the movie. Though the movie does follow a somewhat popular theory that Shakespeare himself did not right the volume of work attributed him, the main theme is based around the works themselves, and how they have the power to influence not only the people who read and view them, but politics also. Anonymous is a great work of fiction that will leave you with a picture of just how human we all are, and how the works of one very special man can touch us all, regardless of who that man really was.

Classic Haunted House Story is a Pleaser for This Horror Lover
8 February 2012
I really enjoyed this movie. After several years of badly done horror movies (with the exception of Insidious), I can honestly say I go into the theater with very few expectations. I usually leave disappointed after an hour of plot-less, cheap hacking and slashing. The Woman in Black however, was a pleasant surprise. This creepy haunted house story set in a desolate marsh during the turn of the century, built suspense throughout the movie, giving you just enough glimpses of "the woman" to keep the audience on the edge of their seat until the truth is revealed. The costumes and set are very well done, and the acting is excellent. I suggest this film to any true horror fan.
