Six Feet Under (2001)
Best Series Ever
I just finished watching the final four episodes of the final season of Six Feet Under. I had started watching the show on HBO's On Demand last year, and immediately became addicted to it. I eagerly awaited the new episodes to arrive and before I knew it, I was viewing the final 4 episodes tonight. The series finale, especially the final 5 to 10 minutes,is without question, the most incredibly emotional moments I've ever witnessed for any television show either network or cable. The soundtrack tied to the final moments of this episode fit just perfectly. It was simply overwhelming. After viewing the series finale, and regaining my composure, I came to the conclusion that what I had just finished watching was the best show I'd ever seen on T.V. I doubt that I will ever see anything that could approach the impact that this series provided. The only downside to Six Feet Under is that it is over.
Paths of Glory (1957)
An excellent war film!
The end sequence is beautifully symbolic. The soldiers in the bar watch as a frightened German girl is brought before them. As the poor lass struggles to sing her song (it really doesn't matter what song), they begin to realize that this hapless creature is enduring what their three executed comrades had endured themselves. Their three comrades were brought before the military tribunal as a formality before their execution. Now these soldiers are the tribunal for this pitiful girl who now stands before them awaiting their judgment. But unlike the cold inhuman justice that the French military machine has dealt to their compatriots, they watch intently as this German girl strives to sing in spite of all their cat calls and hoots and hollers, realizing that she is trying her best in spite of overwhelming opposition, just as they and their three dead friends had tried in attacking the ant hill. They cry because they see themselves up there on the stage.........a poor frightened soul that finds themselves in a situation they'd rather not face but is compelled to do so. Colonel Dax realizes this and allows this brief respite of humanity to engulf the troops before they are sent back to face the horrors of the war. This film is indeed one of the best war films ever made it simply overpowers the viewer with emotion.
Shane (1953)
A great western film
Shane is one of the great western films there is. The production took great pains to portray realistic details such as the layout of the town and the homesteads of the settlers. All shot against the majestic settings of the Grand Tetons of Wyoming. Some of the sequences are shot during dusk, with the cobalt blue sky shimmering through. It gives an eerie moon-glow type of effect. Alan Ladd, Van Heflin and Jack Palance are excellent in their roles. The sound tracks and music are also very good. The scene where Cory is shot down in the muddy street and the shoot out between Shane and Wilson are spectacular. The ending with a wounded Shane riding off, makes you wonder if he will live to see another day. A truly great effort by director Stevens and a fine western to watch and enjoy.
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
The finest film I have ever viewed.
The "Best Years of Our Lives" is without doubt the finest film ever made. The acting of all the cast members is just incredible. I cannot imagine a remake of the film being made these days(or probably anytime else for that matter)simply because the talent does not exist to remotely approach the brilliance of the original. I have viewed countless films which are excellent, both domestic and international, but none had the absolutely sheer emotional impact as this film held for me. I found Harold Russell's role as Homer especially stunning. A man who has lost both hands in the war, yet exhibits the exhuberance for life few of us could ever hope to emulate under similar circumstances was unbelievable. Yet even as Homer struggles through with his disability with a cheerful demeanor, his profound insecurity regarding his relationship with his girlfiend Wilma and the scene where he relates to her how difficult a simple task such as butttoning his pajama top and her lovingly, tender response that leaves him, as well as the viewer in tears . An absolutely, incredible film which you will never forget.
