One Day (2024)
Should have left it with episode 12
At the end of episode 12 I told myself I was finished and didn't need to go on. That was enough for me. I feel like I should have stayed true to my gut. Those last two episodes I didn't need. All they managed to do were gut me. I will forever feel sorry for that poor fool Dexter. He just never seemed to get the timing right on anything. This entire series shows how painfully we squander time. Especially, the time in our youth. You can never get that time back. I understand that they had to grow into the people they did to really appreciate the love later on but the whole thing just guts me and I don't feel like anyone was happy in the end. It begs the question of what was the point in all the living if everyone was so miserable in the end?
Barbie (2023)
So perfectly casted
I'm so happy with the casting that I can look past some other issues. It wasn't as nostalgic as I would have wanted it to be but this is definitely a new generations barbie movie. It really checked all the boxes with me. Fun costumes and great performances. It was fantasy and also very real. I can't think of anyone that could ever be better as Barbie than Margot Robbie. This was the perfects storm and it was a long time coming. Greta Gerwig's directing was fun and the script was inspiring. This movie won't be for everyone for sure but as a long time barbie fan I'm pleased. They left the movie in the perfect place and I don't need more. One and done and I'm ok with it.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
I really gave it a fair shake but...
Seriously, I gave this show a fair shake and an open mind. I started out hating it. It just felt hollow and empty and just not what I was expecting at all. Around episode 6 it got better but I still didn't care about any of the characters. They all could have burned in the volcano and I would have been like "cool can we start over with new characters?" After the last episode of season 1 I feel like this show is fine but still mediocre. You can't even call the twist a twist really. It's just a reveal that's like "yeah I get that". Not totally shocking or anything. I guess I feel like I'll watch another season but the fact that we have to wait till 2024 or later makes me feel like I'll forget about this show completely. I won't forget that I never want to watch season 1 again though.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Very different format but in a good way.
I wasn't so sure about this show at first. The switching back and forth between being a sitcom and a drama was very odd. I thought it would just be the first episode but it continued all through the season. Over time you get attached to these characters but at no point do you really care about Kevin. He's pretty abysmal and that's probably why it works. I'm intrigued and curious to see what they have for season 2 especially since it will be the final season.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Who cares about Anna Delvey? Not me.
I only watched this show because it was nominated for Emmy's and I'm seriously regretting my choice and the Emmy's taste. At no point did I EVER root for Anna Delvey. She's a vapid, narcissistic, selfish character that only cared about herself. What's to root for? Sure she was a woman trying to "build" something but she didn't earn any of it! During the whole trial no one ever asked what she would do if she wasn't convicted because we all know she would do it again. No flipping burgers for Anna. Nope, I know this is a true story but I didn't get anything from this series that I couldn't have gotten from Anna Sorokin's wiki page.
Endless Love (1981)
Obsess much?
I know there's a beautiful love story somewhere in this movie but I'm struggling to find it. Sure yeah their love is very sweet and it takes you back to your first love, all the tingles, all the butterflies. Then it takes a turn and I do hope that our first love stories don't end with arson.
I think the story conveyed the intensity in first love but this guy seems to take it to the next level. It's like no one was around to say "there's something very very wrong about this situation." I was waiting the entire movie for guy to murder that girl. I don't think that was the emotion the creators were trying to convey.
I'm the end this movie doesn't terribly stand up in 2022 and I do hope that people today don't settle for their first love.
Amy Schumer's Parental Advisory (2022)
I should have read some reviews before watching
Amy was funny but the rest was just eh. I know it's hard for stand up comics now because everything is off limits but this was truly rough. I could have skipped this.
Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022)
Cooper Raiff is the new Cameron Crowe
Long have we awaited a writer and director that can deliver heartfelt and relatable coming of age stories like Cameron Crowe. Cooper taps into that part of us that just wants to be young again but then again we don't. He shows the fun but also the torturous side of growing up. It almost hurts to watch this movie but in such a good way. Shithouse showed us the brutality of college but also the importance of the experience. Cha Cha has shown us a more grown up Cooper Raiff that's still figuring life out. He's showing us a more mature emotional man and we don't see that often in film. He's a STAR and I can't wait to see what he does next. This movie epitomizes the struggle of being young and meeting new people on the path of life.
The King's Man (2021)
This isn't a traditional Kingan movie but that doesn't make it bad.
I'm really perplexed by the vast Buber of 1 star reviews for this flick. I saw this in the theater and enjoyed it very much and watched it again on HBO and again enjoyed it. I guess this was just made for me. The time period i retests me for sure and the action sequences were different and inspiring.
I guess if you're expecting a traditional Kingsman movie then yeah this orange it, but I don't feel like it should be discounted for that. It's a good movie in its own right and it's highly entertaining. There's plenty of garbage in the world but this is to Enid them. Just give it a chance and I feel like anyone would be able tog eat behind the story. It takes us out of our mundane everyday lives. That's all we can really ask for.
Eternals (2021)
Eternally regretful.....
You know when something sounds too good to be true and it usually is? Well, this is that. There wasn't just one Moment that went all wrong. It was a culmination of many things. It started decent but about half way through you realize that we aren't any closer to seeing where the plot is going than we were an hour before. I'm not going to beat a dead horse about the run time but seriously it's too long. There are too many words and yet not enough at the same time. I think I'll just wipe this one from existence. Most of these actors are too good to be tainted by this film. I seriously feel the worst for the Chloe Zhao. She fell for the Oscar curse. I hope she can survive this.
Aladdin (2019)
Why Guy Ritchie? Why?
Literally the only reason I watched this flick was for Guy Ritchie. I was hoping he would bring his own brand of special to this remake but I hardly saw him at all. The only part that even remotely felt like him was when Aladdin fell into the water tied to the chair. Everything else was just typical Disney fluff. I know this is just another bad review in a string of bad reviews but I expected more. Disney really got their hooks in. I'm glad he got that money so he can move on and get back to what he's good at. I'm sure it hurts him as much as it hurts us.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Arthur and Excalibur made into a "Buddy Flick"
If you're NOT a Guy Ritchie fan then please move on. If you are then this is the Arthur/Excalibur film we've always been waiting for. No one does "Buddy Flicks" better than Guy Ritchie so why would anyone expect anything less this time? This movie got a lot of heat for whatever reason but as a Ritchie fan I don't see why. It offers up everything we love about his films in a story we love to hear. Ritchie didn't bother us with a ton of backstory on a story we have heard time and time again. He got straight to the point with an amazing cast and bad ass special effects. What more could you want?
