Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
The charm of sci fi movies circa 2000
Sure, it's not a masterpiece, nor something that i will remember in 10 years.
Sure, i could write a lengthy review about everything wrong with this movie.
But i like this movie a lot all the same.
It has the charm, the vibe, the smell, of the cheesy action sci fi movies of the early 2000s. It reminds me of the 2000 Pitch black and other subsequent Riddick movies, of Princess of Mars and subsequent John Carter movies. From the scenario to the way its filmed via the way its acted via the sound, this movie is an addition to an old school sci fi fantasy sub genre that certainly won't please most, but will still please many fans of sci fi.
It reminds me of dusty 80's sci fi fantasy books you dig out at the back of a barely surviving bookshop, it has a style that nobody uses nowadays, it's nothing you haven't already seen before, but it's still an entertaining read.
It transported me to another world and it made me smile.
Just because it's not among the "best" doesn't mean it's not enjoyable all the same.
Napoleon (2023)
Fantasy movie
There was genuinely room to make a good movie if Ridley Scott had taken the time to read some respected Historians biographies of Napoleon.
As it is, it seems that Ridley Scott filmed some imaginary alternative reality fantasy version based at best on ramblings he overheard from a drunkard in a British pub.
The again, when Ridley Scott was confronted about the historical innacuracy, he answered "Were you there?" It says everything there is to say about him not even attenpting to read a History book before making his fantasy movie.
Do yourself a favor and skip it, this isn't worth your money or your time.
Dune (2021)
Worthy of the name
While of course not as good as the book, nor the original movie, this remake has surprised me positively. Maybe it's because my expectations for this remake to reach the heights of both masterpieces were low, but despite it, i have found the movie to be visually beautiful, and to manage to transmit the soul of Dune, something most remakes fail. Some important scenes from the book are of course missing, I hope some will be shown in a director's cut. Overall a good surprise, and worthy of the Dune name.
