The Shepherd of the Hills (1941)
Wayne and Field are terrific in period piece/ not a western
A film about a time and place long gone. This would be as foreign to youngsters as a film in a foreign language. Still the humanity and the fine performances of Wayne and Field and a great fight with Great character actor Ward Bond makes it approachable.
I knocked it down a few points because of a rather ludicrous subplot although The was the witch really a witch or did she think she was a witch was interesting if grossly overacted.
Recommended for history buffs and for Wayne( if you think he can't act???, come on man the guys fantastic at his craft) and Field's performances.
Hunter: Allegra (1987)

Mackintosh and T.J. (1975)
Great adult western
This is a very good, modern, adult western.Roy Rogers and Clay O'Brien give excellent understated performances. The film exudes conservative beliefs but they arise from the characterizations,it's never preachy. Slowly paced, well acted, sad, tragic and finally life and family affirming ,the film left me wishing Roy Rogers had done more adult westerns late in his life.We would have all benefited. Still this "1" is as good as Will Penny,The Cowboy's and better than Buck Taylor's recent similarly plotted Truce. The film features fine back -up performances by James Hampton,Dennis Fimple, and Joan Hackett.(Remember this really ,really is not for kids as it contains cursing, a peeping Tom, and a murder and a suicide. Whew!)
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007)
Two dissenters,we liked it?!
Look this is not a great film .But my daughter and I enjoyed it on a rainy afternoon.Great actors:Perlman,Reynolds,Liotta, and a true action star in Jason Statham.Yes ,the movie is derivative, but so are most films.Yes, the action scenes are a bit repetitive but not nearly as repetitive as the way overlong Lord of The Rings flicks . Furthermore, some of the dialog doesn't work but a lot of it is intentionally laugh outload funny. The stunts are often terrific especially the one where Statham fights while riding under a horse. It is as good as legendary stuntman Yakama Kannuk in a old Three Mesquiteers western.Wow! We enjoyed this flick.Uneven? Indeed .3 out of 10? Not on a rainy afternoon!!Go in with low expectations, like you would have for an old B western and have a real good time.
