Quiet little masterpiece
30 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Through flashbacks we get to see the life of Mr Chipping, dedicated teacher at an all boys school in England. He's a kind man and at first the boys seriously test him. But he perseveres and becomes very popular. He lives for his job and when he's asked to come on a trip to the mountain in Europe he doesn't want to. But he's overruled and goes along. By than he's already a little older. On a mountain he meets the love of his life. He gets married but sadly tragedy strikes and he loses her. In wartime he finally gets to be headmaster for some time. Yes its sentimental but in the most wonderful way. All the actors young and old are great. But naturally Greer Carson and Ronald Colman excel. Especially the latter having created one of the most lovable movie characters ever.

Grizzly Man (2005)

So you think bears love you?
28 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
We meet Timothy Treadwell failed actor and lover of bears. In fact he loved bears, specifically grizzly bears, hence the title, so much he spent many m weeks among them. In fact, he truly seemed to have believed, the Alaska grizzly's viewed him as an alpha male bear, we see clips of him explaining his attitude towards other grizzlys. Now I truly believe he cared for those animals. But, in my view he was more than a little mad. Worse, he encouraged his girlfriend to come and join him. All it took was one grizzly not playing along with Treadwell's delusions. This happened in the spring of 2003. Treadwell and his girlfriend were attacked while camping. the attack was actually caught on tape ( only sounds) director Herzog gets to hear it. It completely shocks him and he agrees it should never, ever be made public. Herzog has made a rather brilliant documentary. He tries to understand the motives of our protagonist. I thoroughly disliked the man, but thats just my opinion. Also, ever after watching this you will not catch me near bears, like, ever.

Kodachrome (2017)
8/10
enjoyable and touching
23 April 2018
A man out of luck in his job at a recordlabel is surprised at work by his father's nurse. She tells him his father is dying and wants to take one last trip to Kansas to get his remaining kodachrome photo's developed. Needless to say the son is less than excited to go on a trip with his bad-tempered dad but he does it anyway. Though fairly predictable this is an enjoyable movie. The leads, Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris and Elisabeth Olsen give fine performances. Especially Sudeikis excells in a role you don't really expect from him. The movie has a nice soundtrack and is nicely shot. Recommended

okay'ish sf movie
5 April 2018
So this movie kept me interested for most of the time. And than it ended and I literally went WTF? It would have benefitted hugely from a better storyline and a more satisfying ending. Lee Pace makes for a decent action hero. Maybe the movie just took itself a bit too seriously. You could do worse watching it. If you don't mind vague movie-endings

Okja (2017)
8/10
wonderful movie
30 June 2017
A beautifully shot movie that kinda starts like a fairy-tale than turns slowly more dark. A company develops a new kind of super-pig. Ten piglets are chosen to be raised carefully. Until it's time for the company to reveal their new product, modified meat from those same super-pigs. One pig named Okja lands in South Korea and is raised by a small family. The girl that takes care of the animal grows up with it. Than it is time for the company to call back it's investment. The cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful. There is a very clear message too. You might want to skip your meat after you see this. No actor really stands out except for Tilda Swinton. It's a good ensemble. Only Jake Gyllenthaal goes quite over the top for me. Only because the message is a little pushy does it not get 10 stars. I hope Netflix will continue making such fantastic movies

The Passion (I) (2016 TV Movie)
8/10
heartfelt portrait of Jesus' last night
9 April 2016
The Passion is an annual event in Holland. It started of small but has by now become quite the event. It depicts the last days of Jesus Christ from his arrival in Jerusalem until his (mercifully never shown) crucification and resurrection. The Passion features pop-songs which are appropriate for the scenes in which they are sung. Most acting scenes are pre-recorded. There is a large stage with a big choir and musicians who perform the songs live. The storyteller introduces the scenes and the singer who portrays Mary sings her songs live from the stage. I remember the first time it came on in Holland it was really modest and really....not that good. I thought this first US attempt situated in New Orleans was rather good. I liked the song-choices. Trisha Yearwood, Seal and Chris Daughtry were excellent. I never heard of JenCarlos Canela and to be sure he isn't a stereotype kind of Jesus. But he does portray a gentle and vulnerable Jesus. And Tyler Perry was an excellent story-teller. Big thumbs up for all involved

Good thriller...questionable morale
8 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
OK so this is a rather intense thriller with Gerard Butler as the victim of a heinous crime turning him into a blind vengeful and dangerous murderer. And Jamie Foxx as a district-attorney trying to stop the murders. Well I have mixed feelings about this one. It's a passable thriller which will keep you engaged until the end. But the end may please some but it doesn't make it right... And yes Gerard Butler's character has been through hell, losing his family but does that justify his vicious murders? And believe me some deaths are pretty horrific. Jamie Foxx is excellent as the mostly rational d.a. trying to prevent worse....but in the end he ends up being Charles Bronson...and Gerard Butler...we get what he's been through...but his character is INTENSLY despicable. So a good watch...but there's some food for thought afterward

hangover part 3 my review
3 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Hangover movies always had a mean/dark streak to them.( I mean the way Alan treats his mum isn't nice to say the least) The 3rd one is no exception. As usual it's Alan and Leslie Chow who are the instigators. Phil, Stu and Doug have moved on with their happy uneventful lives. Alan has gone overboard not taking his medicines which makes him even more unpredictable and mean that ever before. After a freak-accident with a giraffe, his father confronts him which doesn't end well for him because he dies immediately after-wards. On the funeral the Wolfpack reunites and after seeing some of Alans antics they decide to stage an intervention. So they get on their way to New Horizons which is supposed to make Alan a changed man. They never get there of course, because they get run of the road by a gang of thugs led by a guy called Marshall played by John Goodman. He lost a lot of money because of Leslie Chow and he figures the wolfpack has the best chance of finding this oddball. He takes poor Doug hostage and forces the others on their way to find Chow and his money. While it's true that the gags are scarce that doesn't mean the movie isn't funny. Also a lot of loose ends from the first movie get a fitting end. Especially seeing Jade doing really well is kinda gratifying. There's a very nice cameo by Melissa Mc Carthy who turns out to be the one for Alan. So while this isn't laughs all the way through it's still fun to watch and nowhere near as dull as the reviews had made me believe. Don't go away after it ends...there's one after credits scene which has to be seen to be believed.

The Avengers (2012)
10/10
the big and the bold and the awesome
30 April 2012
In the last few Marvel movies ( Iron Man 1 and 2, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor) was an after-credits scene which referred to this coming movie The Avengers. Small scenes which were just enough to wetten the appetite for the planned movie. Well the movie has arrived here in Europe. Story is simple enough. Loki, adopted brother of Thor has his eyes set on conquering the world and subjugating it's people. ( Freedom is overrated according to Loki) In the first scene he manages to steal something from the very secret S.H.I.E.L.D facility. That's when Nick Fury assembles his dream-team. The earnest Captain America, the one and only Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man, Thor himself, Dr Banner ( the Hulk, played by a wonderful, wonderful Mark Ruffalo who's just right for the role) Natasha Romanov and after a short trip to the dark side Hawkeye. Of course there's friction between these strong characters, but in the end they work pretty good together. The Avengers is everything I dreamed of and more. It's big on action, no doubt about it. It looks plain awesome. It's never boring. The chemistry between the actors is obvious and at times the movie is very funny. ( the way the Hulk fights Loki had me almost wetting my pants) It's serious when it needs to be..and when I left the movietheatre I had a big smile on my face. That doesn't happen to me that often. I think this movie is best enjoyed if you've seen at least some of the movies that preceded it most notably Iron Man and Thor. Very highly recommended!
