The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Self indulgence at it's absolute pinnacle
This is the worst movie I have seen in 2017.
The acting is genuinely, hilariously bad with the exception of the main protagonist (who has the potential to be much more, in my opinion). Not a single character shows any facial expression during the entire run time of the film. The delivery of lines that are supposed to be serious is stilted and awkward, like the characters are toddlers, struggling to speak English for the first time in their lives.
The only thing worse than said acting was the writing, I won't 'spoil' the end for you but let's just say, it takes whatever hope you had of the movie ending with any kind of dignity and waffle stomps that sh*t down the shower drain. The characters make dumb, nonsensical decisions at all parts of the movie and are seemingly impervious to common sense. Everything is so painfully awkward I wonder if anyone involved in production has had a human interaction before...
I'm onto you, Mr. Director. Google AI has finally learned to write scripts
Resolution (2012)
God awful
If you want to be scared, watch another movie, because I guarantee this will not scare you. Anyone who said this was horror is a total pansy, and the trailer is completely misleading. It's an existential thriller at best, but don't expect any suspense, or any kind of real explanation, just the kind that artsy people pretend to understand.
This movie is guilty of being boring as hell, and unfulfilling. At least the acting is not bad.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Like terminator on steroids!
This movie had everything I personally like in it. Dark humor, action, science fiction elements, and suspense. The characters are well developed and play off each other, so you actually care what happens to them. This film says more the unspoken shots than the actual dialogue, which is a testament to the actors. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt nailed their parts! Tom being an understandably shaken man with major PTSD issues, and Emily striking a pose as a larger than life bad*ss hero.
Onto the awesome stuff. The soldiers are all equipped to battle in exosuits making them super humanly strong and fast. But that's not where it stops, they have rear mounted shoulder cannons and wrist guns, even wielding swords with ruthless efficiency. If that isn't cool, I don't know what is. However their enemies are no slouches either, resembling the machines from the matrix, they're whirlwinds of death. The eye grabbing style of the surroundings commands attention, resembling real life Halo but with some takeaways from anime.
This is something you have to pay attention to, but trust me you won't want to look away. 9.5/10
Shock Value (2014)
The darkest of all comedy, and it was amazing.
I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this film. The pacing goes quite well between the bloody confrontations and "Oh Sh*t" drama between the characters. They take their time fully developing a few characters so that you actually care about what happens to them, while giving them ample flaws so that their terrible choices don't come out of left field. Getting to know the serial killer was especially intriguing, humanizing him somewhat when he's not in his element, the awkward real-life situations were a good parallel to the menacing silhouette that terrorizes innocent couples.
The comedy, on the other hand, was low key and sometimes very clever. There are a lot of asides to other famous horror movies and some very meta humor if you get all the references. One scene in particular starts at the end of filming the movie in the movie, then transitions into famous scenes from other horror movies before coming full circle. Mind. Blasted.
It's not that scary, it's not outwardly hilarious, but it is THOROUGHLY ENTERTAINING and a good *ss time.
