The Daily Show (1996)
It's time to replace Trevor Noah (SOLVED)
Last year I wrote the review below, but a lot has changed since.
I must say Trevor Noah is doing a stellar job, and I was wrong and impatient. I think I wanted Jon Stewart back, but there is only one Jon Stewart. Which doesn't mean nobody else would be able to do a great job.
I also loved Noah's new Netflix stand-up show! He is seriously 5- star funny!
***************************************************
Look, it's not that we have to be stuck with Noah. I mean, in every business it's like this: if you are not competent you get fired.
Noah is not smart enough, also pointed out by him saying things like 'I didn't expect there would be so much journalism involved', he brings down the ratings, and he is by far less funny than any single member of the old crew. The constant laughing about his own jokes doesn't help either.
Yes, nobody can replace Stewart, but at least do your best to find someone who *understands* the concept. Do your due diligence before making such a big move.
Comedy Central really screwed the pooch by not considering/ignoring/letting Samantha Bee leave. She was the perfect choice. Just look at her current ratings. By the way, she brought with her the two head writers from Stewart's team.
And about the old crew, look at the new crew. Someone like Trevor Noah attracts mediocre talent, mediocre writers and a mediocre production. That is why Jessica Williams is leaving this week.
There are enough smart not-too-young women and men who can do a much better job. But if they don't make me laugh out loud to begin with, then don't even bother.
The Good Wife (2009)
The best TV series I have ever seen
Having watched this show for so many years now, I have to say it's the best I've seen so far.
I've grown so fond of the characters, they have so much depth because of the acting, writing and directing. I'm afraid it will be difficult in the end to lose them when the series come to a closing eventually.
I cried so much when Will died, and having to miss Josh Charles' character is still a loss, although every other character is the show is so perfectly played and put together.
There is so much variation in the writing, many times it's almost as if each episode has a new format, as if you're watching a fresh new series. But there are certainly main themes that come and go throughout the seasons that make the series stick with you.
What is really strange for me is that I sometimes watch episodes twice. There is just more than enough to pick up a second time around. I don't do that with any other series, except that I do a season binge watch a year later or so with a few other series.
My sincere gratitude goes out to the whole cast and crew, you are the best of the best.
Togetherness (2015)
Annoying, uninteresting dramedy
First of all, I don't ever have to see another glance of Melanie Lynskey's bosom. The director seems to want to throw that in every 2 minutes. It is inappropriate and has nothing to do with the story, only seems there to bump ratings.
Second, what is Amanda Peet doing in a mediocre TV series like this? Apart from having much more star power her character is not very plausible. She gets dumped in the first episode by some loser schmuck although - with a better makeup artist - she is still a stunning woman that can have her pick of any man she wants.
Then finally, the story arch's are not interesting. I don't care about these people and there little problems. Producers: please stop wasting money on bad scripts and show runners that want to make a quick buck.
The After (2014)
Implausible and forced script
Setting aside the high expectations when Chris Carter starts a new TV series, I was disappointed with the first episode of The After.
Things like the implausible get together of this group of people just before 'it' happens, the unnecessary panic in the underground garage, the very unnecessary nudity at the pool (which producer insisted on that?) especially combined with the 'philosophical' text for the girl, the questionable casting, badly timed dialogue and poor directing.
I'm not triggered in any way, I'm not stimulated in any way whatsoever to watch the second episode.
But I will watch it only because Chris Carter made it and he deserves a chance because he brought us the X Files.
But frankly I really don't understand any of this...
Ground Floor (2013)
One of two comedy series that makes me laugh out loud: hilarious!
I'm at episode s01e04 now and Ground Floor is SO funny, I can't believe it! I'm so jealous of these writers, well done!!
Just like with Scrubs there is a perfect balance between comedy and drama.
A lot of other (new) comedy series lack a good bit of drama and that makes them shallow and flat very quickly.
The casting is great and there's a wonderful sexy chemistry between Briga Heelan and Skylar Astin that creates a good base for every storyline.
Also Rory Scovel deserves 10 stars as the crazy-jealous weirdo, and veteran John McGinley's character is certainly no copy of his alter ego in Scrubs and is again very, very funny.
Back then I got bored with the last season of Scrubs, but now it's impressive to see how Bill Lawrence has managed to bring a fresh new comedy that is in my opinion the funniest on TV right now.
Just invest a few episodes in the characters in Ground Floor and you'll be rewarded!
Touch (2012)
Good idea for a movie, not for a TV series
Unlike most people here I watch several episodes before I make up my mind about a TV series or movie.
But with Touch it's very clear: the concept so brilliantly presented in the first episode already falls apart in the second episode.
The magic and the big surprise from episode 1 are gone in episode 2. We already know that the kid has some special power to link people and locations together to help someone by the end of the episode.
And where this concept was presented delicately in episode 1, it has been done over the top in episode 2. Martin Bohm only seems to be shouting at his son: 'What do you mean with this? What do you mean with that?'
You already know that you have to just sit and wait for the end result at the end, you already know that most of the characters you start with in the beginning will be connected, yada yada yada. There will be no surprise, so it's utterly boring.
Another (lesser) mistake in episode 2 is the role of Clea Hopkins (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). Yes, she is still really pretty, but she doesn't add anything to the story and could have been easily replaced by anyone else. So no character building there.
Furthermore, in the first episode Clea Hopkins understood the kid special situation in the end, so why take ten steps back and be the annoying woman from child protective services?
And then the kid. I believed him in the first episode, but in the second he just looks and acts too much like a normal kid. It doesn't help that he talks to the audience in a voice over at the beginning of the episode. So he can talk?! And he knows it's strange that he never said a word?! So basically there is no reason for him not to speak? Urgh.
The concept for Touch's episode 1 is great, brilliant even, but is only suitable for a movie. If Tim Kring keeps repeating this same formula for every next episode he will be in for a treat.
The right thing to do here is to simply create new concepts within the magical universe of episode 1. Surprise me.
