American Dad! (2005)
I love this show :)
In my opinion, American Dad is a lot more funny and intelligent than Family Guy is. I can't figure out how this show has a lower rating than Family Guy does on this site. I'm guessing it's because one came before the other, and some people can't appreciate this show enough for what it is because in reality, it's better. Or they don't have the right sense of humor- the fun kind. But then how did they even enjoy Family Guy in the first place? The animation is similar to Family Guy and so is the humor. It's definitely made me laugh out loud because of some unexpected, silly moments while Family Guy has that dry sort of silent humor that gets cut off by flashbacks most of the time. The lines are delivered the same way though. The funny parts just tend to be darker- funnier and more complex.
Stan is an over the top CIA agent that obsesses over what he believes is right while being incredibly close minded towards other peoples' beliefs. Dramatic, spontaneous, and self-centered, he seems to believe everyone should think the way he does or simply denies his own true feelings to feel superior, and will go to extreme lengths to prove a point.
Compared to Lois, I find Stan's wife Francine less annoying and more realistic. There's more character interaction and development in this series so naturally I find some characters better. She comes across as silly, troubled, and sometimes attention seeking and wants her husband to be more open and sensitive. We learn that she used to be a crazy, impulsive, party girl growing up and was adopted.
Klaus is a perverted German who's body was made to be a fish by the CIA. He appears depressed and attention seeking at times and has a disturbing crush on Francine.
Roger the alien is the most obnoxious, dramatic, and careless character on this show. He's a druggie, alcoholic, cross-dresser that loves acting and pretending to be other people. He comes off as more feminine than masculine and literally has to complain and insult others to survive. It's said he arrived to their world when he crashed in Roswell, and influenced history up to the point he ended up with Stan to hide from the CIA.
Stan and Roger have some intimate moments in at least two episodes that I've seen. Both being sexual. Roger reveals to Stan that he was his "first" after spending a night of drinking and regrets with him. In the other episode they make out and proceed to get into a provocative position on stage while an audience gasps. That gets cut off and they then sit in a police car together talking about how good their acting was, seeing it as just that.
Moving on to kids, Hayley is Stan's rebellious, pro-life, weed loving daughter. She constantly questions authority and goes out of her way to shove her beliefs onto her father, seeing them as right. She comes off as a promiscuous daredevil and it's suggested multiple times that she has some sort of sexually transmitted disease.
Her brother, Steve is a nerd with a high pitched voice, bad luck, and a misunderstood sex drive. His biggest goal in life so far being to be liked and get with a girl just once. Almost like Meg's emphasis on being an outcast only Steve is shown doing more while Meg constantly gets emotionally abused and stays depressed.
Recently, there was an episode of Family Guy all about how Meg felt about how she was treated by her family. She stands up for herself and this really surprised me because it was the first serious, sincere moment I ever saw on that show and honestly I was tired of the humor with her being, "Haha, she sucks, has hair, is weird, and ugly." And, why do you exist? Almost like they advocated bullying.
Seeing Peter stupidly curled up in a closet after being faced with their problems was a little pleasing and funny in itself.
Anyway, American Dad has its high points. It may go to extremes in regards to comedy and entertainment but that's what makes it interesting, fun to watch, and possibly more realistic. No matter how this might have made it sound, if you like comedy you will enjoy this. If you really like Family Guy, you will enjoy this also. If not, stop watching Family Guy.
10/10
Mad (2010)
Ha.
One of the more interesting things Cartoon Network has shown, Mad is ridiculous enough to be funny. Nothing about this show is that bad. It is bad in a silly, amusing way. It could be a poorly designed, purely kiddie cartoon instead but I don't think too many people like over the top kiddie stuff either. Will we ever be happy?
I never heard about the magazine before seeing this.
The humor can be crap at times but that's the best part. There are worse shows that are actually popular and watched by tons of people, because they agree more with what they see. Maybe there's a lack in originality here but it's maintaining it's difference by standing out.
You can't take everything you watch that seriously and this is one of those things that's so random it just makes me laugh.
It gets a 10/10 for not being incredibly horrible, or crowd pleasing either.
Perfect.
MAD.
The Roommate (2011)
Not Enjoyable
It seems like there are a ton of movies that are supposed to scare you because there's someone who isn't emotionally or mentally okay. And that's not okay because that's not entirely realistic. Younger people might like something like this because it shows that someone who acts different or creepy or crazy IS, and WILL be like the "crazy" girl in this movie.
The climax, Sara discovering her roommate was medicated. Of course she had never heard of the medication before so she had to do a search on the internet for it. *Suspense*
There's also the fact that Rebecca automatically gets made out to be the bad one. Everyone is supposed to be glad she's dead by the end of the movie. No one must have cared enough to support her properly or encourage her because she was as bad as bad gets in her case. She could have been okay if someone understood her and talked to her more.
The problem is the lack of insight other people have not the problems almost any person is guaranteed to have at some point themselves.
But, hey, just make a movie out of it.
Besides seeing this as offensive and wasteful it can be liked by someone who doesn't care as much about the things mentioned above.
1/10 Enjoy.
Johnny Test (2005)
No.
This show is awful. There's absolutely nothing to like about it and you'd have to be bored or mindless to enjoy spending your time watching it.
The characters aren't likable. I'm not sure why they exist. The animation IS bad, and hard to look at. Other, older shows DID look better. This doesn't remind me of anything from my childhood it just makes me feel bad that someone might relate it to something that was fun to watch and "original." I never saw it before last year. I thought it was something Cartoon Network made up to fill in for the things that are missing now that were better. It isn't filling in much.
Johnny's a cheesy, obnoxious character who's nose goes up to the top of his forehead. That much is annoying. It doesn't seem like there are many variations in the episodes, how are there more than a few episodes? Jimmy Neutron, Dexter's Laboratory, the Fairly Oddparents, Spongebob, sure they were all good shows but even Spongebob is getting bad, and Nickelodean still hasn't come up with any other cartoons that are good enough substitutes for what's gone from there.
As Told By Ginger was also good, and different. People need to start coming up with better ideas for a television series because this is extremely disappointing.
