Faa ho yuet yuen (2004)
FUN FUN COMEDY
This is a fun comedy about an emperor in an ancient kingdom with 12 princes and now is overjoyed at the birth of a daughter. (geesh, his wife must be happy too!) However...she is stricken with a strange affliction-an overpowering horrible body order. (the baby princess is so cute) Well, the emperor tries to find a cure to help this lovely princess, the wonderful Miriam Yeung. = I watched this aboard SINGAPORE AIRLINES (incredible list of films to watch...over 60...many international). I had to catch myself several times for I was laughing out loud over the fun antics. The beginning of the first half of the film is a stunning comedy. It does slow down a bit in the middle, thank goodness, then has a very nice ending, though predictable. due to the absolute fun trip, one is totally forgiving to the predictable ending. = The cast was great...Ms. Yeung was incredible. Perfect timing and just lovely. It seemed the whole cast must of had a blast making this film. The 'bloopers' at the end of the film were not translated, and they would of been enjoyed by those who loved the film. = Lots of silliness, enjoyable and visually beautiful. Costumes and settings were stunning.
La mala educación (2004)
Mala film...
OK. As most hard-core cinema folks, we have come to love the director and his wild films which are truly bent in a different direction than most. One is not expecting anything American as a Bruce Willis film with Pedro. The different take on politics, religion, and sex are all what one goes to see in Pedro's movies. He does not do the politically correct sell-out to American audiences to make an American buck or even an European euro. Still, folks go to see his movies for the different take on stories dealing with people on the edge of society. (No one is assuming that all Spaniards are bi/gay/bizarre just because Pedro is a famous director.) = Of course, everyone in the USA hard-core cinema land is awaiting this film. Luckily, I saw it in Paris where the audience consisted, not of bi/gay/bizarre folks, but of movie lovers. Unfortunately, using the HOT ...the IT actor...does not make a dull movie good...no matter what is the actor's state of 'dress' or undress.
= The story line goes all over the map along with the time line of the story. Confusing identities, confusing time lines (where and when are we), and confusing story lines, just do NOT make an arty movie.
= After, the ending, when the film all comes together, one is fuming mad over the true lack of punch of the story that one had just followed.
= Naked hot men, sexual seductions, cute boys, weird church behavior, scary sex change folks, horny church preachers, hot men kissing, a cameo by the director (he's the pool boy), homage to some homo erotic artistic paintings, switching identities, switching sexual identities, switching sex genders, switching time, switching forgiveness, switching who-done-it...it all amounts to WHO AND THE HELL CARES! = A BIG PASS ON THIS ONE...
Jigureul jikyeora! (2003)
fantastic thriller with an insanely cool twist
this was a hit at the SAN FRANCISCCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. almost a SILENCE OF THE LAMBS with an incredible insane twist that was so over the top cool that it would be a shame to disclose it! must say, i NEVER seen a film carry off the wild ass change of pace as this incredible film. 3/4's of the film is a serious study into the bizarre mental breakdown of a young business man who thinks his boss is a space alien who wants to take over the world...the acting on the part of main actor is incredible with the film exposing his breakdown bit-by-bit. one is on the edge of their seat seeing the steps spiraling downward into further madness and insanity....then the film shocks one into a different reality that as 'insane' as it seems, works so well....this is such a bizarre thriller, that is hard to see that there was not an audience for it in Korea...truey, concepts way way out there such as an early john waters film, or the early MAD MAX/ROAD WARRIOR series...that it will take awhile for it to create an audience...but, one will be deeply rewarded with a great incredible story....scarey...and fun...with a message even!
Ce jour-là (2003)
Wonderful 'who-done-it & why' Bunel-esque movie!
This wonderful 'who-done-it'& why' Bunel-esque movie is a hit at the 2004 SAN FRANCISCO International Film Festival!
Everyone in the audience loved this sureal quirky mystery about greed with the beautiful Elsa Zylberstein playing the 'insane' Livia who is tracked down by an escaped 'mental patient' Pointpoirot played wonderfully by Bernard Giraudeau.
The director is a master of story telling combining surealism, comedy, suspense and heartfelt moments.
After the movie, the beautiful Ms. Zylberstein provided a wonderful commentary about the film making process, the director, and her role . Especially pertinent was the explanation of the symbolism of the 'dinner party' to actual events during the military dictatorship in Chile.
Incredible film, which hopefully will be distributed and later available on DVD! (I want it in my DVD collection!)
