Lost in Translation (2003)
There are no words...
When I saw the preview for this movie I thought, "Oh how boring." But it received wild praise and won Oscars and what not, so I decided just to watch it for myself. Oh, boy. While the acting is well done, the plot left something to be desired. By the end of the movie I was left speechless. Not because it was so good, but not because it was really bad either. It was just a flatline, and while Bill Murray adds some much needed comedic relief, this movie just seemed to be lacking something for me. I understand the message, and once I watched it I finally understood the title of the film, but still...eh...this is just one of those movies where either you'll love it, or hate it. Watch for yourself.
The Riverman (2004)
Surprisingly chilling performance from Elwes as Bundy...
I didn't know what to expect when I began watching this movie. I was immediately intrigued once it began going, however. This is the true story of how Ted Bundy (Cary Elwes) actually helped to find the Green River Killer back in the early 80's in his attempts to get a lighter sentence and avoid the death penalty. Although this movie is not about Ted Bundy it does go into his crimes a little bit and you get to know a little bit more about Bundy's twisted psyche. The performances were great, but the one that stands out is Elwes portrayal of the serial killer Ted Bundy. I didn't know if he could pull it off, but he did an excellent job and was very believable and his performance was chilling. I give this movie a 9/10.
The Ring (2002)
A Classic Horror Film
This was one of the most tactful, good old fashioned horror films of my generation. I don't scare easily, so it's hard for me to say this was scary, but I can say it was definitely very eerie and suspenseful. The plot was very well done and mysterious, it kind of leaves you wondering, but not in a "the directors didn't cover it" kind of way. More of a "it's supposed to be like that" kind of way. The acting was great, especially from David Dorfman who played Aidan, Rachel's son. He was an aloof, mysterious young boy whom, I think brought a lot of the eerieness onto the film. I definitely would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good jolt in the night.
Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
Funny
**MINOR SPOILERS**
This was also recommended to me by a friend who found this movie "very scary" in their words. When I watched it on tape I found myself laughing my butt off. The ghosts were really cool, but I wish IN the movie they could have told their stories, some background on the ghosts a little bit. It wasn't too gory, otherwise it would have made this movie even cheesier, but all in all it was pretty good. I thought the ending to be a little weak, throwing Kriticos into the middle of the Eye of Hell, and then after that the ghosts just walking off and disappearing. I think it could have been a bit better than that. Over all it was not scary, mostly funny, the ghosts were awesome.
Queen of the Damned (2002)
Man oh man!
I am a die hard Anne Rice fan, especially of her Vampire Chronicles, so imagine my surprise when I realized that the movie was NOTHING like the book. First of all, I suggest that anyone who wants to read the book and watch the movie to WATCH the movie first, that way you'll get a better idea of why they couldn't put every aspect of the book into the movie. I am trying to appreciate Queen of the Damned as simple Vampire flick, and take it as it is, which is the only reason why I like it. But if you compare it at all to the book (written by Anne Rice) you will more than likely hate this movie with a passion. This is by far one of the worst transitions I've seen from book to movie however. And I don't nitpick at the many details that they left out of the movie or blatantly ignored because it just destroys the experience. As for the actors, I thought the accents to be awful, and Aaliyah did not do a very good job at playing the role of Akasha. I think Tom Cruise would have made a better Lestat, he was much more vampire like and didn't over exaggerate the role of Lestat. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good vampire flick.
