The Defenders (2017)
The Writing is Terrible and The Defenders is Super BLAND!
6/10 that's right. Only a 6? See for yourself and make your own decision. The Defenders isn't horrible, it's not Ironfist bad but very close. The writing is terrible, huge gaps between even the most basic of conversation between two people almost feels like the actor forgot their next line. How Netflix took a well set up and established group of people and made them boring I'll never understand.
In a nutshell, Danny Rand (IronFist) is still a whining, moaning, frat boy. Yes yes Danny, we get it you're the Ironfist as you keep telling everyone. Luke Cage's does more damage to the world of acting and line delivery than any of his powers. Jessica was at least a little more interesting but she's a poor excuse for a hero. Her fighting and powers suck. Yes, she flips a table on occasion and lands the odd punch but her choreography is the worst of the bunch. Why is she even there. All she does is bitch and moan, adds nothing to the story and can't fight her way out of a wet paper bag. It's like the editors knew, the show very little of her fighting and when you see her punch it looks more like the stunt guy is selling it as Jessica's limp wrist makes contact.
The best of the bunch and the most interesting, the best fighting and dare (pun intended) I say it is Daredevil. Charlie Cox's acting is understated. You believe him when he delivers a line. His fighting is exciting and what you'd expect from a superhero.
Finally, The Hand. Have a bottle on Jack Daniels with you when you watch and every time someone says "The Hand" take a swig. You'll be plastered and through the bottle before the first half of the first episode. The Hand this, The Hand that.... What a bunch of boring villains. WHO CARES.... for the love of all that's holy, please bring back Kingpin... he was at least engaging and interesting. Instead we get mopey Sigourney Weaver (Who at least was the best acted villain) and we get little Chinese Madam Gau with her cane... so tired of seeing her boring ass in these Marvel Netflix TV shows.
The writing is poor, the acting is terrible or at least average and the story is predictable, not exciting and bland. Danny Bland should be his name. Flaccid Fist.
Sadly this series had great potential but it ended up being something that a superhero show should never ever be.... boring.
For comparison here is my Netflix Marvel series list from Awesome to Boring.. 1. Daredevil S1 FANTASTIC 2. Jessica Jones S1 Pretty Awesome 3. Luke Cage S1 pretty good but they had a weird boring lull during episodes 7-10 4. Daredevil S2 suffered boring episodes round 7-10 like Luke Cage 5. The Defenders (see above) 6. Ironfist.... should be Flaccid Fist. For a supposed martial arts master who spent all his time training with the best of the best and FOUGHT A DRAGON.... you have the body of a 12 year old girl and your fighting is garbage. For a show about fighting, it was the biggest disappointment.
Singularity (2015)
Great short film. Not boring and I wanted to see more at the end, which is a good sign.
Honest review....It was really well done. Compared to half the other tripe I've seen on YouTube this was one of the good ones. Well edited, well ADR'd, nice color grading and the acting wasn't OTT or hammy. The visual effects were really well done, subtle and not cheap looking. The editing had a great pace to it. The production value was really well done.
The story was nothing new or overly original but it was executed really nicely. I wanted to see more at the end. I see many have mentioned an over use of strobe. Not a big deal, It didn't bother me.... and I LOVE the fact you didn't use shaky cam to fake excitement. Kudos.
Darkwave: Edge of the Storm (2016)
Slight spoilery honest film review
Here is a spoilery honest review.. cinematography pretty good. Acting mostly really good.... mostly. Parents look NOTHING like the kid so that took me out of the story... it's like the directors were... well the kid has a unique look with his lips and curly hair.
Most visual effects were good. The Bird ship or whatever it was was a cool concept but the 3D model they used for the last shot was terrible. No textures, no lighting, it looked like a 3D model you purchase on Turbo Squid for $30.
The mom, best acting. Little hammy during the entire dad- daughter reunion piece. The dad pretty good. The fight between the half dead technician in the bunker was awful, AWFUL! pulling punches, terrible choreography... but the worst was the addition of the "slow motion" as he was electrocuted. *eye roll.
The story was intriguing. Although... there wasn't a defined beginning-middle-end. Even short stories are supposed to have those. The beginning was fine, intriguing... kept me watching... the middle grew bland with the Father-Daughter speech and the Dad in the bunker looking for supplies... then the ending was awful and fell apart. I get there was some sort of "twist" with the Bird plane you thought was gonna be bad but then ended up good, but as an audience member I didn't care by that stage.
Production value: 6/10 Acting 8/10 Production design 5/10 Visual Effects 7/10 Story... um, 7/10... started off good but fell flat.
