Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
One major flaw I can't unsee
I don't want to spoil this movie, I agree with some of the comments in the negative reviews but overall was really digging it for the first 30 minutes. It's not the best movie but it was enjoyable, and the first scene you see him in with the mask is honestly kind of frightening. They do a good job making the revenge seem like a horror, which strikes me as a very real way to approach that, it doesn't feel overly dramatic or anything it feels scary.
Thag being said, there's a scene maybe 30-40 minutes into it, where the bad dudes drive to the guy's house with a damn rifle, mess up the shot and hit their own guy, then drive off cowering in fear and let the person they came to shoot just continue to get away. They also know where he lives and do nothing else about it. This scene immediately killed the entire movie for me, it was the most like, it ruined any tension that was built up and seemed so ridiculously out of place for those characters - why would they cower and run away when they had a gun and the guy was standing there. Idk, I feel terrible knocking the whole movie but that one scene ruined the entire feel of it, it felt like all my cares went out the window.
El secreto de sus ojos (2009)
I don't understand
I've heard a lot about this film over the years but had never seen it. Last night I finally decided to watch it and I was genuinely excited going in. I had this kind of pleasant, relieved feeling like "hey this is gonna be smooth sailing, I get to watch a classic movie that's supposed to be engaging, most likely going to have a good experience"
I realize at the 30 minute mark that watching this movie is beginning to feel like a chore, and that never went away. I tried to not be overly critical and give it an honest shot, but the rest of the movie just never went anywhere for me. Some of the scenes wracked my brain with why that would be included at all (the whole weird face to face scene + the train scene did a number on me), and at the hour and 45 minute mark I felt legitimately that I had been tricked.
I guess I don't understand what's so great about this. I didn't find the story all that interesting, and the way that it's shot isn't particularly engaging. The pacing didn't do anything to help the movie, the characters themselves seem just kind of flat and uninteresting, I definitely didn't get any emotional acting, there wasn't a whole lot of style, it all just felt very bland. At the hour mark, or maybe somewhere around the train scene, I just felt like I was watching some generic made for TV movie.
