Better than The Playboy Club, not even close to Mad Men
11 June 2012
The 60's genre is always appealing. People always associate that time period with great fashion, good times, and free spirits. Although this show tries to portray all the glitz and glam of this era, it ends up being a poor mans Mad Men in all senses. You'll see right through the bells and whistles, leaving only weak story telling at the most.

I really wanted to like this show but unfortunately, it doesn't have what it takes to be a great show. I don't see this one going passed 2 seasons but I'll give it a chance again if it does.

I gave it a 6 because of the genre and attention to detail in that sense but other than that, it'd get a 4 from me.

Think Fubar in the ghetto on coke
11 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This film is basically a mocumentary of what life in the ghetto is really like. It follows a drug dealer/robber who steals a camera off some college kids and gets one of his boys to film his life. Like Fubar, the stupidity rating is off the charts but you can't help but watch more. Unlike Fubar, this one doesn't have any laughs (unless you're laughing at them). It's more of a "how i'm hustlin/livin kinda deal.

It's disturbing to see how pathetic the lives of actual human beings can be but here you have it. Random baby having, going to jail, drug dealing/robbing, alcoholism, never go anywhere attitude, shoot each other in the streets and an embarrassing take on what 'flexin' should look like are just a few things you'll get to experience with this flick.

LOL The most ghetto cities in Canada have nothing on this hood.

Worse than garbage
11 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When I was in junior high, we had to put on a play about a terrorist hijacking of a plane (weird because it was pre 9/11). That piece of crap my class and I put together in 20 minutes was better than this movie. I mean I'd hire any of the actors in my school production over the actors in this film.

LOL the script is even worse. They must've gathered every single person who ever failed out of a script writing class and asked them all to produce this single script.

I know Kilmer has been in a lot of bad movies lately but this one definitely takes the cake.

LMAO watch the first 30 minutes to see how bad a film can actually be. Other than that, don't even re-gift this DVD to your worst enemy. You'd be a better person for taking a dump in a box and wrapping it up.

Bored to Death (2009–2011)

My favourite comedy in recent years
11 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This show was just awesome. I'll start out by saying that if you know Steven Chow and like his work, you'll really enjoy this show. It's the closest thing to a Steven Chow film Hollywood has had to offer to date.

I can't believe this show wasn't picked up for at least another 2 or 3 seasons. Too bad. This style of comedy is never seen on T.V.(not this caliber) and it's going to be a while until something like it comes around again.

I'll admit the first season was a little rough around the edges but it had some of the most memorable scenes (LMAO the skateboard stealing scene when Galifinakis reacts to Shwartzman not being able to get into the car HAHAHA GENIUS).

The writers are very creative in their story lines. I loved seeing the always elegant Isla Fischer guest staring in the third season. She fit right in. All 3 of the leads are brilliant. Every episode is a howl and if you enjoy a little 420, this show is right up your alley.

Pot or not, Bored to Death has got to be the most under rated comedy this decade. No jokes.

Watch it, you'll zip through 3 seasons before the end of the week.

Think Payback on speed in a Mexican prison
10 June 2012
From beginning to end, you won't stop. This movie doesn't take breaks nor does it give the viewer time to think. From scene one, the car is in drive and pedal is to the floor.

Mel Gibson knows how to make a film and this one delivers endlessly. Every character is likable/watchable and every scene captivates. The dialogue was on par with the feel of the movie.

Mel Gibson is great in the lead as always. It's great to see that the supporting roll (the kid) wasn't annoying and cheesy like the way most punk kids are portrayed.

The story line isn't dragged out and the plot is thrown at you in a easily receivable fashion.

Justified (2010–2015)

Best crime drama on TV right now
10 June 2012
I say the best and I mean the best. The writers of this show certainly know how to create suspense. From the beginning to the end of every season, you NEVER know how things will turn out. That's what I love the most about this show.

If you're put off by the whole hillbilly thing, consider this. I'm a Chinese guy who grew up in the city. This show isn't brought down by the red neck element but rather enhanced. Everything from the language and even to the life style are strangely interesting.

If you've seen 'The Wire' then you know what I mean when each season is set up with one major crime syndicate which revolves around the daily lives of the characters. This style of show is great because things are really thought out and it presents itself as more of a mini-series every season.

Set in rural(Harlan County)/urban(Mainly Lexington) Kentucky, this show revolves around the life of Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens. A cowboy hat wearing, fast drawing, gentleman with deep roots in Harlan County itself(this becomes particularly interesting in the second season). He's sent back to Harlan from Miami because of events that unfold in the first 5 minutes of the pilot. The fact that he grew up in Harlan County and how he knows most of the characters sometimes plays in his favour and sometimes not but regardless, it is ALWAYS entertaining to watch.

The characters are some of the most interesting on t.v., Boyd Crowder being my favourite. Here's a character that's been brilliantly created and even more brilliantly portrayed by Walton Goggins. You'll love him when he's evil, you'll respect him deeply when he's just. The highly well spoken and intelligent super racist that you can't help but root for.

Even some of the small reoccurring characters are more entertaining than a lot of leads on other shows. Duey Crow comes to mind first LOL. Here's a guy you'll look forward to seeing. His path crosses with many of the main characters on a regular basis.

There aren't many shows of this caliber on T.V., let alone FX. If you're looking for a new show to watch, this is the one.

Longmire (2012–2017)

Looks promising
10 June 2012
I'll admit I only gave this show a chance because it premiered at a time when a lot of shows are on break. I'm glad that I did because this might just turn out to be the next great law show (Justified being the most recent). Have to wait and see how the season turns out.

After watching the first episode, you can immediately tell the producers and writers are keen on character development. With the only about half the episode devoted to the first case itself, you'll learn a lot about Sheriff Longmire quickly. That's not to say you won't enjoy it though. This show is VERY watchable. I actually went back and watched it again the next day. A&E hasn't produced a lot of shows I've enjoyed but I'm looking forward to the episode.

Set in Wyoming, viewers can expect to see beautiful scenery and the pilot certainly did not disappoint in that sense. Native Americans play a major roll in this show and it seems the hostilities will progress throughout the season. The show focuses on old school methods of law enforcement rather than the recent trend of C.S.I. semen under the fridge kinds that have been dominating in recent years.

Give this the show a chance.

The Dictator (2012)
7/10
Actually funny
9 June 2012
For those who are offended by this movie, you have no business watching a Sasha Baren Cohen movie. You're probably the same type who thinks Tarantino's movies are just about violence. Sasha Baren Cohen is a Jew playing an Islamic dictator; what were you expecting?

I didn't really like Borat and I hated Bruno but this movie was genuinely funny. Sasha once again shows how he can be so offensively funny. Yes, he pushes the boundaries with his comedy and he does go over board a lot of the time but this one was actually done well.

This is the type of movie where you'll need to listen to every line spoken because so many jokes are thrown at you at times, it's hard to recognize all of them. Definitely 10 times better than I thought it'd be. LOL even the music is done hilariously.

Surprisingly funny
7 June 2012
Considering how bad Jonah Hill's last movie (the sitter) was, combined with the HORRIBLE acting of Mr Tatum, I expected a flop but I was pleasantly surprised.

This film has genuine laughs through-out that aren't cliché and are actually . Jonah does what he does best, play the funny student. Even Channing and his horrible acting were tolerable. Ice Cube gets a special mention for stealing every scene he was in and giving viewers a few lines to recite randomly with friends for days after.

You'll definitely find this one funny if you liked films like Superbad and more recently Horrible Bosses.

Braveheart (1995)
Magic
7 June 2012
Some say this film is just Mel Gibson's way of glorifying himself, those people are talentless hacks. This is easily one of the best films of all time. I don't say that lightly. This is THE film that sparked my interest in cinema.

An amazing story of love, betrayal, war, revolution, oppression and quite simply, it's a true hero's tale. The story is so well told and so engrossing it pulls the viewer into the movie.

This film will make you feel the anger and betrayal the characters feel in a way that very few films are capable of(the way you felt in Saving Private Ryan when Mellish had a bayonet SLOWLY shoved into his heart while Upham hid in fear) over and over. It can and will make a grown man cry.

The acting is far above par. An amazing cast that really didn't get the recognition they deserved(all went to Mel really). The beautiful Sophie Marceau made her Hollywood debut in this film.

Something few people mention is that this is the first film in which the violence was actually realistic although the background fighters were less than convincing at times.

If you are a TRUE fan of cinema, this is a must watch. A real classic unlike other so-called-amazing films such as Citizen Kane. It's the full package and represents what Hollywood really does best.

Anyone who says this movie isn't good most definitely thinks the Twilight films are masterpieces.

Could've been great but ended
7 June 2012
This movie would be great if it's concepts were original. The script is basically a mash up of several Hollywood concepts/twists which are by the way, very apparent to the viewer. The film felt dragged out a lot of the time.

Kevin Spacey does what he does best. He's a well trained actor and it shows in his work. I think Daniel Wu did alright considering who his supporting actor was.

There are ways to answer questions clearly and ways to answer them subtly (something the show 'Mad Men' does very well). This movie went for the latter and didn't do a very good job of it. It was confusing in a bad way, especially with how Daniel Wu's wife was portrayed.

I will give a kudos to Spacey for stepping into the Chinese market before the rest of Hollywood's actors realize what early exposure there now could do for their global careers in the future.
