Close Encounters... of the worst kind (contains spoilers)
6 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I love Steven's movies and brought this for £3 at the store today, simply because his name was attached to it and figured "hey if it's not great, it'll at least be fun"... unfortunately I was wrong.

Me and my fiancée sat watching it, but the film never really seems to grip you in any shape or form. I really enjoyed the character development in the film, showing excellent emotion and the lead character was quite amusing with his crazy moments.

My disappointment was down to the fact we were never really given anything to sink our teeth into... then the ending resulting in a bunch of song playing between ships and a keyboard with little lights?.... then more ships come to play a song... followed by a really BIG ship who out plays the musician..... it just seemed something and a whole lot of nothing in the end.

They fly light years to return a bunch of people and old planes, to kidnap a child for a couple of days and then take a guy, breaking his family up on the sole purpose of seeing some lights and hearing them play five keys of music? The end?....

Now I'm not bashing those who like it and don't want a flame war on here, at the end of the day it's just my opinion, but it really felt like two hours of nothing, with the opening ten minutes being the best part of the movie. A real shame as the opening ten mins seemed to be building up to an interesting movie.

Double Team (1997)

Re-writes aren't always for the best...
28 December 2005
This is one of many movies that was originally a fantastic script, but the excellence was sacrificed for "hopeful" buys by allowing Dennis Rodman more screen time.

Van Damme mentioned in an interview how the original script was amazing and how Yaz (Rodman) was originally just a one time appearance character. But after a number if re-writes, the script had changed from a dark action flick into a more cartoon like action flick and this is clearly seen in the movie.

Mickey Rourke and Van Damme set the pace for a very thrilling film in the first 30 minutes until Dennis Rodman rears his ugly head and destroys the movie. Rodman's character is very over the top and comes complete with more corny lines than all of Rocky Balboa's jokes combined and on top of that brings so many unrealistic scenes to the movie including with where a coke machine holds back a giant explosion!? The movie had SO much potential and if you see this movie without the stupidness and corny lines of Rodman and keep the movie on the track it began, you can see it would have been an action classic.

Overall the finished product is an average action flick, but could have been so much more.

Octopus (2000 Video)
Predictable but Not Bad...
9 May 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this would be a stinker and instantly turned to my girlfriend and said exactly what cliches we'd see in the casting.. and yes I was right. We get Rookie Cop who happens to know everything in Roy Turner.. Evil Non-American Villian in Casper... Manly yet cool bad ass in Jack Shaw.. Pretty blonde who's a doctor and not from the area in Dr. Lisa.. and the tough black guy in Brickman.

Now the film started off cheesily and very predictable but picked up once on the sub where Jack Shaw, Lisa and Brickman came into it... the open scene with Brickman and Lisa was funny and the two weren't bad actors. Roy (the lead) however is horrible and Jack Shaw is trying to much to be Brad Pitt in my opinion.

The CGI to this is somewhat flawed yet still fairly good.. some bits confused me like how the Octopus is around the same size as the Sub, yet around 5 times bigger than a Cruise Liner which happens to be bigger than the sub?

**SPOILERS**

When the sub is on the bottom of the ocean and the Octopus is smashing through it and the water is coming it, how come it seemily stops coming in and the sub remains un-full and not even half-full for another 15 minutes. When in reality a slight tear and the pressure would have torn it in half.. yet this stopped letting water in?

Another is they find Anthrax has infected the water outside the sub, yet the same water thats got into the ship is harmless enough to swim in?

And the ending where Roy gets out of a mini sub about one second before a huge bomb blows up, so he's still very deep underwater... yet escapes and is fine, when in reality the Concussion Shock of the blast recieved underwater would have killed him on a bomb half the size as the one used.

****

So other than these obviously un-intelligent parts of the script, the movie is actually fun if you just view it as a Monster/Action Movie.. I liked it looking at it in that light.. but if you try and question any of it like I did above, you'll be as confused as me. So if you like the type of film you can still follow when drunk with friends and want some cliches on a cheap price DVD.. this is your movie.. otherwise avoid as the lack of good acting along with so many un-intelligent script flaws.. the film is awful.

I give it *1/2 out of *****

Crocodile (2000 Video)
Cheap but Enjoyable...
9 May 2004
I brought this for 6 bucks and it came with two other cheapo budget movies Spiders and Octopus (such creative names). But Crocodile which I expected to be the lamest one, shocked me as being the more enjoyable one. Although the CGI is horrible and a few of the characters are so boring that you don't notice they're eaten, there are some plus points.

Duncan is without a doubt every womans nightmare and the coolest guy in the movie, he's funny and a typical guy.. very believable because he even looks the type that he plays.

Brandy is the typical pretty boy star of the film, but one thing that stunned me.. he COULD act, he stole the film for me and really impressed me. I'm quite surprised to see he's had no roles in any slightly big movies. He's a good actor, plays the character well and is a very believable teenager.

The rest of the cast are not so great, Claire is the best actress in the movie but Sunny has more of a character to her.

The plot is what you'd expect and although the Croc Hunter (who's name escapes me) is a poor actor and made me laugh out of lack of ability to do his totally 20 lines well, just remember.. he's just an extra meal and u won't mind him.

Overall an enjoyable film which I'm glad I brought at an average of 2 bucks :) Props out to Duncan and Brandy.. I'll give this film a *** out of *****
