Black Mirror: USS Callister (2017)
A fun episode that ultimately means more or less nothing
I like the premise and the whole idea behind the episode. A loner programmer remakes his favorite show in a playable game where the cast are people from his real life that he struggles to talk to. He's a brilliant mind who can't interact with people, cool, I'm on board with this.
There's just no punch to it. He's a bitter ass who vents his frustration through a game. In the end the 'hero' are free lines of code in an online game. Not really the same sort of gut punch as the other episodes.
Overall I still do think it's a good one to open a season with, it eases you back into Black Mirror so that the upcoming episodes have a stronger punch to them
Black Mirror: Crocodile (2017)
Great premise, just poor execution
The first 20 minutes or so I really enjoyed. It was plausible that in the heat of the moment she could kill him. The fact she is an architect was an interesting plot point. Also the idea of being able to screen memories was nice and for the first few interviews it was a cool idea.
After that I started to have some issues
Firstly the receptionist implying she watched an adult film seemed a bit forced. Then her killing the insurance lady just seemed out of character. A successful architect with a family killing a woman in such a way doesn't seem right. But then I don't know what other way the story should go. Seems like something that should have been left at the writers table. A clear example of this is her killing the baby and the hamster being a witness. Even if the baby could see how good is the memory? It seems to keep changing the rules of the world to suit the plot which just left me lost and kind of bored at the end.
Black Mirror: Metalhead (2017)
Very Tense
Probably one of my favorite episodes to date. Not enough people talking about the soundtrack, perfect classic horror. While it doesn't feel like a Black Mirror episode it does feel like a well written short horror film
One More Time with Feeling (2016)
Excellent film, worth a watch for any Nick Cave fan
I enjoyed most of this film. My only gripe was having to watch it in 3D which slightly killed it for me at times. Apart form that I really related to the first half when he was talking about songwriting and the entire creative process. The second half about his son was very touching and was a great insight into the event without getting too personal. The scenes with Earl and Suzi are very raw and I thought it was very interesting to get an insight on them. In past films such as 20,000 days on earth you never really saw either of them apart from a short scene here or there. 20,000 made him seem larger than life and I would say was inspiring to watch. This film makes him seem human and much more of a raw film.
Overall I'm looking forward to re watching this when it comes out but probably in 2D this time.
