Streets of Fire (1984)
Amazing, underrated movie
This is a great film. It's not the most thought provoking film ever made but it never pretends to be either. The set designs are terrific, Michael Pare is a great hero and the direction is pacey. Diane Lane is quite possibly the most fantastically sexy leading lady ever in this movie, the concert scenes are incredible, especially the opening song. There's a lot of atmosphere in this flick, the '50's styling with '8o's music works well - the neon drenched, rain soaked streets are a joy to behold in the DVD transfer of the film. Streets of Fire is a much underrated film, and in my opinion much the best thing Walter Hill ever made. Everyone who had a hand in making it should be proud. It should take pride of place in any movie buff's collection
Chelmsford 123 (1988)
Brilliance.
Absolutely brilliant comedy, well written and superbly performed. A terrible shame no more than the two seasons were made, an even bigger shame that when trite rubbish like "Absolutely Fabulous" gets famous this gets virtually ignored. I just wish that Hat Trick would get the two series of Chelmsford 123 released on DVD. I contacted them a year ago to ask if it was in the works and was told they had no plans to do so. What a missed opportunity. Anyone remember in the first episode the cameo toilet stop for a well known British sci-fi character? Genius. The first episode set the tone for the rest of the story, with very very funny, sarcastic and dark humour interspersed between the slapstick. A real gem of a show that should have carried on for a lot longer, it really deserves to be given a chance again on DVD at least, to give those of us that loved it a chance to see it again. Come on Hat Trick, get on to it...you know you want to.
Still Crazy (1998)
Perfect
Forget mindless Hollywood "blockbusters", this is a truly brilliant movie. Anyone who has not seen it has missed out on one of the best examples of cinema in the last 20 years. Extremely funny whilst still able to blend poignancy and a smart script without ever slipping into schmaltz or stupidity, it builds throughout the movie to an exceptional ending, made all the more excellent for the song "The Flame Still Burns", (in my mind a song that if this was a fair universe would be remembered along with classics such as Layla, or Alright Now). A script by the superb Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. Incomparable acting by their long-time Auf Wiedersehn,Pet collaborators Jimmy Nail and Timothy Spall, amongst a cast of British stars such as Bill Nighy and Juliet Aubrey, what more could you ask for?
One Crazy Summer (1986)
Underrated gem
A very funny, warm hearted movie, it never fails to make me laugh when watching it. A shame it was never a bigger hit considering so many absolutely awful films did better. All the actors were brilliant in their roles. John Cusack, among a few of the others, has gone on to bigger films but for my mind, this is one of his best, along with Grosse Pointe Blank and Better Off Dead. Some great scenes, terrific lines and an explosively funny finale. The commentary on the DVD by Savage Steve Holland, Bobcat Goldthwaite and Curtis Armstrong is terrific as well. There's not many films you enjoy in your teens that you still love in your thirties and onwards, but this is one of them for me. A true gem.
