Forces spéciales (2011)
Plot is much similar to Special Forces (2003)
Plot is much similar to Special Forces (2003). It is based on US special forces in a former soviet country trying to rescue a journalist. This movie is likely to be a remake of Special Forces (2003). Actors are well suited to portray the roles of Special Force soldiers, specially with the beard, as many armies allow their special forces to keep their beard unshaven.
White Ghost (1988)
Bad gunfights
In this movie like many other Vietnam war films, Vietnam army is shown as weaker that US army. But everybody know that US lost this war. Vietnam officer tells this to Thi "We fought them and won". But in movie, Vietnamese soldiers can't shoot an American standing exposing his body in a short distance. Entire Vietnamese squad could not kill one American. Can any special force commando expose his body and destroy an entire army camp? This is an insult to Vietnam army who crashed the US forces very cleverly in Vietnam war. An army as shown in this film can be defeated by any person who can operate a gun. No special force training is needed. Apart from this weaknesses, it gives good hand to hand fight scenes. What is the purpose of Lt Steve's stay in the jungle? Was he on an undercover mission and later the connection with US army or CIA was lost? Major Cross states something about such operation and Steve says to a mercenary about his commanding officer is holding a woman and child. What is Thi? Is she working for US? Or did Steve stay in Vietnam to live with Thi? Walker and his bald sidekick are the most villains who kills the members of their platoon too. Movie would be more realistic if the war scenes were presented not making Steve a bulletproof superman. The love of Thi to Steve is very emotionally presented. Rosalind's acting as a woman bearing any pain to protect her man is appreciable.
Marana Simhasanam (1999)
Unrealistic execution
Film describes the society's real face in the following aspects. 1) when the coconut thief is caught red handed, people enjoy bullying him by hanging coconuts and baby coconuts on his body. 2) police imposes all outstanding unsolved crimes (murders etc)on coconut thief and gets rid of their duty of investigation. 3) Politicians fight for execution by electric chair. They don't fight for justice. Socialists start a fast to death for this purpose. 3) Thief's wife is well happy about what she gains because he is the first person electrocuted. She is not sad even at the time of thief's death and even after that when she sees his monument. 4) At last, background voice says that the thief became a great man by being the first person who was electrocuted. Director subjects these human nature to humour. Exceution is just like a natural death. Director would watch world famous documentary films "FACES OF DEATH" and get an idea on electrocution.
Ammawarune (2006)
Extremely bad art direction
Lester James Peiris is a world recognized director. But his desire to wrap the main female characters in sari makes the films unrealistic. We could see this weakness in Awaragira, Ammawarune, Giraya etc which he directed and in Sakman Maluwa which he wrote the script. Foreigners may not see anything unrealistic on this as they might think about Sri Lankan society is similar to Indian society. But as Sri Lankans we see that is not realistic. Unfortunately, Sri Lankan critics are not paying attention to bad art direction. Specially they seem to be scared of criticizing the films of well recognized directors such as Lester and his wife Sumithra. The story of the film is contemporary to the civil war (After 1983). The family of Sumanawathie is very poor. Sumanawathie's casual dress (which she wear at home) is not suiting the family background. Premalatha's Dress is not the dress of woman at her age at this period. Apart of that, Sunanda is riding a ladies bicycle. Area at which this story is based seems like north central province. People in this area don't waste money on ladies bikes. Both men and women ride mens bikes (Bike with a horizontal bar between handle and the seat, on which a person can travel other than rider). It is very sad about the juries which give awards for these unrealistic creations, and the critics who don't criticize these. The reason for these unrealistic creations is that the directors, art directors, script writers, critics and juries of award ceremonies are based on Colombo. They are not aware of the rural life. They imagine that the rural life has not been changed for decades. Never placed their foot in a real village, they do their creations. This film shows an imaginary rural life which doesn't exist in real world. Good acting and direction and other creations have been spoiled with bad art direction. Lester should keep this art director away from his future films.
Inainda Kaigal (1990)
One hero is a Muscle man, but the other is not.
I watched the Tamil film "Ineinda Kigali (Fixed hands)" at the theater. When I got to watch "Aakhri sangran"(final battle) {the name should be corrected), I realized that this is the Hindi dubbed version of the above Tamil film. Same actors, same scenes, different language and different character names (Sathish in Tamil: Prathab in Hindi). Absolutely this is an action packed adventure. But in two hero movie the director must avoid the exhibition of one actor's weakness over other. Leading hero Ramki, as many other Tamil actors, is not a man with perfect muscle built body. The supporting hero Arun Pandian, is a strong tough guy with muscle filled physique. There are very little number of strong men in Tamil films such as Arjun, Sarath Kumar, etc. In the scenes with bare arms, we see the difference of these two men. in the scene that two men catch their hands with friendship in the train, Arun's jerkin sleeve is stretched as his muscles stretch. Nothing happens to Ramki's sleeve. Director should avoid such incidents when south Asian fans are appreciating well built strong heroes. (such as Hindi and Hollywood films) Acting is well done. Ramki's actions when he steals the statue is super. The story is nicely managed. The villain amputates his own leg to save the life. In the combat scenes, it is again shown that Arun is a good fighter with martial art skills than Ramki. In the scene of cliff climb, Arun takes the lead. It is reasonable up to some extent because Arun (David) is a well trained army major while Ramki (Prathab) is a bandit. This is a very good film. If this weakness was not there, it would be better.
