The Sixth (2024)
10/10
Superb documentary on January 6th riot, told through the eyes of six people who were there.
6 May 2024
Every American should see this movie! A 'close-up' of what happened at the U. S. Capitol on January 6th, supported with an excellent map of where everyone was situated, and what was happening, minute by minute. You feel such tremendous respect for the police officers, the Chief of the MPD, and others who worked to keep the rioters from entering the Capitol or harming any members of Congress.

The photographer, Mel D. Cole, took photos right in the midst of the crowd, although he was scared to death at the end.

Right now it's available on Amazon Prime, but only for sale at $19.99. And rumors are that Prime is going to remove it.

Watching this small band of police officers battle the crowd, the question has remained - What took the Army so damn long to sign off on support from the National Guard??

Painkiller (2023)
10/10
Awesome drama/documentary
26 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As soon as I started the first episode of Painkiller and saw "Crazy Eyes" (from Orange is the New Black) in it, I knew I could be hooked. And hooked I was!!! The acting was superb, but Adu really carried the show.

And Painkiller does Americans the favor of showing just how Perdue and the Sackler family became the biggest drug dealers in America, and just how that affected individual families of their victims. After all, your average street dealer just wants you to keep coming back for your hits, and doesn't care if you buy more of the product....but for Perdue it was always more, more, more.

Netflix also does society the favor of making the Sackler family pariahs forever. No surprise that they were the company that also formulated the original Valium.

Amsterdam (2022)
7/10
Playful movie, great acting, marvelous cast!
11 October 2022
I approached "Amsterdam" with foreboding because of its many negative reviews, but it turned out to be fun, suspenseful, and with great acting performances by all. And along the way the movie highlighted the difficult path of WWI veterans after the war, and brought up a now little-know plot against Roosevelt by some big businessmen.

The period clothing, cars, and etc. Were superb. As another reviewer stated, Christian Bale was awesome, but Zoe Saldana and David Washington, along with DeNiro, made the movie special.

There were shots depicting the horrible injuries incurred in WWII, and the suffering vets continued to have when they arrived back in the States.

Altogether a surprisingly coherent movie, despite what most reviewers had said.

Great story - right on the mark.
23 January 2019
Surprising how many reviewers didn't get this movie - as the white mother of a black son, it certainly resonated for me. My son was the same age (in an area of Crips in Seattle in 1988) coming home in our neighborhood when he had an incident with the police (again, traffic), and a gun was also pulled on him. It was one of the few times he was alone in the car, without me or one of his friends. As a white parent, I had NO idea what it would be like to suddenly have police yelling and pounding on my front door in the middle of the night. My son was also one of only two black students when he went to a private middle school, and yes, I'll bet he could relate to that a bit, too. I thought the acting was great, particularly Mr. Hornsby, who played a heroic and protective father, and one whose life was changed for love of his family. And every parent of a black child has had those talks with their kids - "if you're on the street, don't run away - do what they say to do. If you're in the car, move very slowly and obey directions". For white people out there (some reviewers) who were upset about the portrayal of the police, keep in mind that the police are the ones who LIVE through these incidents, not the driver. Kudos for a movie based on reality, not some damn Marvel comics!

Nerd Bar Live: Mad Max Fury Road (2015)
Season 2, Episode 10
4/10
Lots of chase scenes, sand, and white people
24 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I guess people of color or ethnic groups other than white Euros don't make it to our polluted, resource-starved planet of the future, because this movie had 100% white people from what I could tell. I know it was filmed in Australia, but there were LOTS of extras - don't tell me there aren't Aussie East Indians, Vietnamese, indigenous Australians, Chinese and others around who couldn't have contributed to these scenes. And having one woman driving with a big gun and a willingness to fight doesn't make it a 'feminist' movie when the women she's protecting all look 18, are a size 6 and have just a slight amount of clothing attached to their bodies.

The big world out there is well over 50% non-white, Hollywood! Get with the program.
