Tenet (2020)
Interesting yet boring
Conceptually I think this movie is pretty clever. The execution was meh. Took me three tries to get through the whole thing. It's a convoluted mess. I think in trying to do something clever and new, PACING was never considered. At least not in the way it should have been.
The irony of the fact that I knew exactly how it was going to end from the first big reveal is not lost on me.
Stay Out of the F**king Attic (2020)
On the fence
I've never seen a movie with so many cliches that break the mold for movies of this subgenre. I wish I enjoyed it more but.
Parts of it were pure trope, and I ticked off many boxes on my horror movie bingo card. Then other parts went in a completely atypical path that left me actually impressed.
It's more gory than creepy, so if you're looking for a haunted house movie you can skip this. BUT if you want to see white supremacists get what they deserve, this movie is for you.
Last but not least, my number one problem with this movie is that they spent more time in the basement than the attic.
I See You (2019)
Not the movie you think it is
You go into a movie with expectations. Trailers, descriptions on streaming services, and reviews all contribute. And a third of the way in you're sure you know what's going on and this film flips to the other side and says "no, really I'm This kind of movie". So you settle in thinking you know the score. You don't. It's brilliant. The title says it all.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
Just terrible
I'm a horror fan so I expect movies like this to contain violence. But this was just ridiculous and over the top. Seeing how long it took to get this released down not surprise me a bit. It's really just a string of torture scenes, primarily violence against women and girls. The investigation parts almost felt tacked on.
The Prodigy (2019)
Predictable is an understatement
If you're not into horror, you may enjoy this movie. I felt like the acting and pacing was fine.
Unfortunately, if you've ever seen ANY other movie where someone is behaving oddly and their loved ones are trying to save them from something supernatural, you've seen this movie.
I personally found this movie to be super boring because every twist was on my checklist of what I expect from movies like this. Instead of exploring this trope and looking for a new angle on it... it felt like they went down a checklist of what has been done previously.
Domain (2016)
Wasn't what I expected
Slow but even though I saw the ending coming a mile off there were still some surprises. Very interesting concept / commentary on privatized prisons.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Fans of the original book should avoid at all costs
If this series had been made without claiming any relation to Shirley Jackson's novel OR the original movie I might have given it a higher rating. The acting was fine, the design was fine, but as a fan of the original I am highly disappointed.
Mainly because I feel as though the creators of this show had no understanding of the original material. This became clear as the show progressed and was more of a family drama than a ghost story.
However the very last line of the movie should be enough to make my case:
"Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there... walked together."
And on top of that, there is a book in the series named The Haunting of Hill House that is written by one of the main characters... a male character. I know this is fiction but seriously? Isn't that a little insulting to the memory of the woman who created the original work?
