Subject Two (2006)
Brilliant!!!
I watched this last night and was very impressed. From the opening of the film to the beautiful expansive shots of the cabin location, I would never have known it was shot on such a small budget. It is obvious this is someone's baby. I'm certain a great deal of gratis work went into it. I can only say well done!
This film is a treasure for anyone interested in a great character study! I watch low budget indie films a often. I know it was not an easy thing for the team that made a fine film! I highly recommend. When I first rated this, I gave it a 7. After seeing the micro budget, I happily raise it a point! Cheers!
Hush (2008)
87 Minutes of my life that I can never get back...
I read other reviews of this film and decided too give a "2" rather than "1". Simply because the arguments made are valid and I like to keep an open mind.
Generally, I love British thrillers. A poor budget or mediocre acting aside, the British usually do things better than the Americans (just my humble American opinion). However, this film takes all the bad things from American thrillers and gives them a British nuance. The film is as if C. Thomas Howell and Rutger Hauer, in "THE HITCHER" had a baby with LeeLee Sobieski and Paul Walker in "Joy Ride". The result is less than entertaining.
So my dear horror and thriller fans, give yourself a break. Pass on this one. It will only disappoint.
Pontypool (2008)
Wildly Intense,.. Original & Scarry!!!
It gets more and more difficult to find an original horror flick that does not conform to a canned recipe. This film delivers! Firstly, let me acknowledge and applaud the fact that no cgi was used. If it was, it was used with such a deft hand that it was not evident as with too many horror movies today.
The cast (albeit small except for many extras) did a superior job in their offerings. The portrayals were believable and sensitive. The director was masterful in setting a claustrophobic atmosphere. However all was done so subtly that I must give accolades.
Horror is my genre. I have been watching it all my life. This one rates very high! Check it out.
The Awakening (2011)
Mildly Entertaining,
Before watching, I had read other user reviews. My expectations were not through the roof, but I was indeed looking forward to something "Clever and Intelligent". This sadly turned out to be nothing more than another ghost tale. The cinematography does a great job in setting the dark mood for the story. And although the direction was excellent, accompanied with superb performances from the actors, the whole surprise of the story fall woefully short. Within the first half of the film, I had figured out the "mystery". Yes, some of the ending details were amusing, but thats is about it. I can only offer up a sad "6" for this effort. Call me old fashioned!
Triangle (2009)
"I promise."
I was unexpectedly pleased with this movie. I had been on a roll with dull, mindless stories, but this happily broke the trend! I generally prefer a bit more blood and violence in my horror/thriller choices (call me old fashioned!), but the director used such artistry in setting a dark and creepy tone from the start that the story never suffered visually. The acting was better than most films of this nature, but certainly no Oscar winners here. I did have some problems with some of the secondary cast and their relationship with our main character, but again, I am a staunch believer in not expecting too much from this genre. All in all, A Keeper!
