Killer Golf (2000)
Golf meets Avatar
This is the Avatar of TV Reality shows. Could be the best new idea I've seen in 20 years. Someone will make a fortune with this. The graphics, idea and design of this pilot will be the forerunner for reality show and game shows of the future. Combining celebrity players, pro players and 'everyday Joes" is smart. And the social networking possibilities are endless. Every network, sponsor and related business should be jumping in on this. Its a game show, sports show, and reality TV that is so compelling, I think it could take over from real outdoor golf. The idea of pitting competitors against each other in an indoor arena like gladiators and throwing out the usual etiquette brings in a whole new audience for this sport. If I were a social network related company I would bet on this being the next great TV wave.
The Path to 9/11 (2006)
Disney's 911 gets lost in Fantasyland
First of all I must say that the cameraman couldn't ever focus on anything. I think this serves as a microcosm for the whole movie since it appeared that nobody in this film seemed to be focused on anything but sugar coating the whole story. If anyone took the time to read the full 911 report or Richard Clarke's books regarding the attack and history of the event, one would see that Disney seemed to lose this film in Fantasyland. The time line also was so compacted that any chronology seemed absent. I did like the casting choice however for Condoleeza Rice. Using the villainous Sheri from 24 was actually a perfect depiction. Harvey Keitel seemed lost in translation and I think this production broke the record for most eye closeups ever. It seemed that when in doubt the director said cut to the eyes.
Gosford Park (2001)
A poor man's version of THE MANOR
Gosford Park attempts to craft a classic period piece murder mystery. Many of the performances are superb, yet one can't help but compare it to another similar picture in the same genre. THE MANOR done a couple of years earlier is more unique, with a more interesting plot, over all better acting and casting and is without question, much more beautifully shot. I think Gosford Park is certainly worth seeing but the suspense level of this earlier film, THE MANOR is achieved more effortlessly and with much better results.
