Reviews
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
A rare treat - sequel better than classic original
When I first saw James Whale's original 1931 FRANKENSTEIN movie I was totally blown away by it & over the years I have re-watched it countless times. But suprisingly it was only recently I watched Whale's 1935 sequel BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN which I avoided for a long time as I thought it would never equal the original & I didn't think that making Boris Karloff's creature talk would work - how very wrong I was!
Very rarely do we see a sequel to a classic movie which actually surpasses it (the only other I can think of is THE GODFATHER PART II). The characters in BRIDE are much more involving & I absolutly adored the scene with the creature and the blind man - so much was said about the two characters with so few words.
Whale also injects some welcome humour into the story which doesnt detract from the film at all. Elsa Lanchester as 'The Bride' (she also played Mary Shelley in the films opening scene) is a truly tragic & iconic figure - just like Karloff's creature.
James Whale created not just two of the best horror films ever - but two of the greatest movies ever made in any genre. Truly classic stuff!
The Goonies (1985)
Hey You Guys!
I remember watching The Goonies countless times as a child & I recently bought a DVD copy expecting that the film isn't actually as good as I remembered. How wrong I was!
Basically ,& I know its a cliché, but they don't make movies like this anymore. Its a typical lads fantasy movie & I'd put it up there with Rob Reiners Stand By Me (also released in 1985) as one of the greatest 'bonding' films ever made.
Surprisingly it comes from the director of the classic horror film The Omen, but not surprising is that a certain Mr Spielberg has put his stamp all over the film. The cast are all likable characters - especially the sensitive Mikey, the loud Mouth, the inventive Data, the lovable Chunk (who could forget 'The Truffle Shuffle'!), the clumsy Fratelli family (especially the brilliant Anne Ramsay - now sadly deceased) & the heroic Sloth ("Hey you guys!").
Some of the actors have continued their success - Corey Feldman (Mouth) went on to the aforementioned Stand By Me & Gremlins (then sadly made less successful films), Sean Astin (Mikey) has made himself immortal in the movies as he played Samwise in Peter Jackson's awesome Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Josh Brolin (Brad) has continued to work in films & Martha Plimpton has gained critical acclaim for her theatre work.
The movie has all you need for a couple of hours of pure escapism - a treasure map, an secret underground passage, booby traps, pirates and of course the good old "good vs evil".
The Goonies has stood the test of time 20 years later. If you remember this film from your childhood I urge you to re-visit it - you won't be disappointed. A bone-fide movie classic!
Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)
Worst sequel ever made?
Now I've always respected director John Boorman (The Emerald Forest, Excalibur & the classic Deliverance) so when I got to see his sequel to William Friedkins 1973 classic I was expecting something special. What I got is a horror film I will never forget - and all for the wrong reasons!
Exorcist II:The Heretic is just mad! I mean c'mon - swarms of locusts, Richard Burton hamming it up big time, James Earl Jones looking really confused & Regan (Linda Blair) having 'special powers'. Is this a sequel to one of the greatest horror films ever made? Shame on you Boorman!
This film REALLY is as bad as people say & deserves its status as the worst sequel ever made. Avoid, big time!
-10/10
La casa 3 (1988)
NO CLOWNING AROUND!
Recently I picked up this title as an absolute bargain on eBay for just 99p & to be honest I wasn't expecting much as I'm a huge horror movie buff but haven't heard much about this title.
The director is credited as Humphrey Humbert - but to my surprise this was a pseudonym for the legendary Umberto Lenzi (better known for the notorious Cannibal Ferox). But those of you expecting a cannibal gut-crunching movie will be disappointed. In fact the film doesn't really have much gore in it but for what it lacks in human entrails it certainly makes up for in creepy atmosphere & an unforgettable spooky soundtrack.
Now I don't know about you but clowns have always been sinister to me & Ghosthouse is basically about the spirit of a young girl who carries around this clown doll & when she appears in front of unsuspecting victims they are soon dispensed of. Its at these moments that the creepy 'nursery-rhyme-esque' theme tune kicks in & it'll play in your mind for days on end!
Don't get me wrong this aint no Exorcist or Dawn Of The Dead but its a little known movie which if you get the chance is definitely worth watching.
Maybe if the director had used his real name & billed it as 'From The Director Of Cannibal Ferox' then it would've done much better financially.
