Laserhawk (1997)
Save the buck, buy a cup of coffee
My brother has a tendency to buy DVD's of the $1.00 rack. Needless to say we've seen some real gems. "Laserhawk" is, and I think this is being kind here, the absolute worst piece of crap film I have ever seen, and I've sat through "Glen or Glenda"!! The acting was worse then awful, the special effects were completely lame (we actually thought this was from nineteen eighty something) and the story was every lame Sci-Fi Cliché that has ever been used. EVER!! "Dolemite" is better then this. And do you know what the worst part is? People on this site actually said it was GOOD!! For your own sake, and the betterment of humanity as a whole, save the buck, buy a cup of coffee.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Now that's more like it...
I have been huge Star Wars fans since I was a child and did not expect the new films to measure up. Good, but not great is what I expected. With "Revenge of the Sith" Lucas has given us a film that really dose measure up to the original. This is what we wanted to see when we heard the first rumors of Episode 1.
The film shows how Anikin Skywalker falls from grace and becomes Darth Vader. It is action packed, and very dark. (You may want to give it a look before taking the younglings) The films climax is the duel we've been waiting for, as Master and Apprentice square off on the volcanic world of Mustafar.
The acting is not bad. The best acting in the film is Ian McDiarmand's portrayal of Chancelor Palpatine. This is his first chance to shine in the series and he really dose a great job.
There are characters we know (Obi-Wan, Yoda, and even a brief appearance by Chewy) and characters we have yet to meet (General Grevious). The space battles are cool, the sword fighting is awesome and the effects are, of course, amazing.
This is what we've been waiting for, this is a "Star Wars" Movie!!
This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
This review goes to 11....
This is one of my favorite movies. It stars Michael McKean, Chistopher Guest, and Harry Shearer as Englands Legendary Spinal Tap and Rob Reiner as the "film maker" Marty DiBergi. Marty is out to make a documentary ("an, if you will, Rocumentary") about an aging metal band, chronicling their waning popularity on their latest tour.
The music is ridiculous yet somehow realistic, and the bands antics (includeing getting lost backstage) are truly hysterical. The cast is amazing and includes some unexpected and at the time unknown actors. (Look for Dana Carvey as a mime/waiter) This is an awesome film that everyone, specially Metal heads MUST see.
The Core (2003)
Just take it at face value, you'll enjoy it more
"The Core" is a corny borderline B Sci-fi movie that has everything needed for a good disaster movie. It has science with no seaming basis in reality, a cast of recognizable but lesser known actors, and the wanton destruction of recognizable land marks (the Colosium, the golden Gate Bridge, etc.).
In the movie the earths core has stopped spinning due to some super secret government earth quake machine with the dubious name of "Project Destiny". To fix the problem a group of scientists and astronauts must drill down to the earths core and "jump start" it with nuclear bombs. Characters are killed off one by one trying to save the mission and instill some drama.
The acting is not great, but then this isn't quite Shakespere. The effects are OK. They spend most of the movie drilling through the earth so there isn't a hole lot to see anyway.
If you can take it for what it is (corny sci-fi) then I think you'll find it's a descent way to spend a few hours. Just take it at face value, you'll enjoy it more.
The Boondock Saints (1999)
Definitely makes you think and extremely entertaining
I have several friends who have been talking this film up for years. I finally broke down and barrowed it from one of them and I LOVED it!! The film is about two Irish brothers who take it upon themselves to rid Boston of all "evil" men. Violence ensues. They are pursued by an FBI agent played by Willem Defoe. As Defoe's character starts to understand the motive of these fledgling vigilantes, he begins to wonder if maybe they're not really the bad guys. The film has a strong ending that leaves you asking yourself the same question. No mater how you answer it, this movie definitely makes you think while, at the same time being extremely entertaining. If you haven't seen it I definitely recommend it. If you have seen it you should probably go out and buy it. ...I know I'm gonna!
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
AVP is an awesome movie that stands alone
I just saw AVP last night (Aug 13). While it is not the best film in either series (those being the 1st in each series) I thought it brought them together well.
It sets the film in Antarctica, 2004. That ties in to Predator, which has always been a here and now series. It ties in with the Alien movies by using Lance Henriksen as Charles Bishop Weyland, owner of the Weyland Industries, which I thought was a nice tie in. It also answered for me how the company knew about the Alien to begin with.
Weyland hires a group of scientists and explorers to uncover an ancient pyramid buried in the ice of Antarctica. The pyramid ends up being, what else, a breeding ground for aliens. The predators come once every hundred years to Hunt the Aliens as a right of passage. The science team unwittingly become entangled in the hunt and have to fight to survive.
It had a good story, good characters, and the fights were just cool. The movie would stand better as a Predator 3 than it would in the Alien series, But in any case, AVP is an awesome movie that stands alone!!!
The Village (2004)
a good film with a poorly delivered ending
I just recently saw The Village. I got a little sucked in by the hype, So I didn't enjoy it as much as maybe I could have.
Shyamalan could have done better for him self if he had not mad such a big deal about a twist ending (you can all relax, I reveal nothing). After reading about the film in "Entertainment Weekly" I figured it out. They did not reveal any details about the film, except to say no one new much about it and there was a twist. I think I just kind of jumped to the next conclusion and happened to be right.
Not that it's a bad ending. Far from it, but I kind of felt that it was not delivered as well as I think it could of been. I think he left one clue that was unnecessary, and then revealed the end about 30 secs to soon.
My other complaint was that it is billed as a suspenseful thriller. Although there are a few scenes that made me jump, the movie really wasn't all that thrilling. The characters also have a lofty way of talking that seems to drag out some of the scenes.
The story is more a romance between Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Howard (Ron's kid, by the way) than the supernatural thriller we (my brother and I) expected to see.
On the whole it was a good film with a poorly delivered ending.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Great film with only one complaint
This is a superb ending to an awesome series. Anything that was changed or cut from the original book seams to me to have been in the spirit of Tolkien's work and helps further the film. Jackson's direction beautifully brings this story to life. The acting is great, even Elijah Wood, who, I must admit, I originally thought was rather oddly cast.
But I did have one problem (my only complaint from the whole trilogy)
Jackson just kind of breezes over Saruman's end. He is one of the principle villains of the first two films and they wrap him up with a line of dialog.
Gimli:"Lets have his head and be done with it."
Gandalf:"No, he has no power any more." So, OK, when did that happen?
After reading this in the book I was ready for a good wizard's showdown. I think (hope?) Jackson left the scene for the extended version. I feel he could have cut more later and left this in.
But like I say, this was my only complaint from the whole trilogy. I know it seams like I make a big deal here, but it is only a small complaint.
On the whole the film gets a 9 out of 10. An excellent adaptation.
