Poor Things (2023)
All critique valid, but take a different approach
I'll just say that I took my time reading negative reviews and a lot of them make very precise observations about the movie but, in my opinion, come to a wrong conclusion.
It is disgusting what the men do to her. It is disturbing. There is too much sex. But that's the whole point.
The way I see it, she's totally being taken advantage of, but she's ultimately the winner. The depravity is not something that is being shown to us bc the director let slip of his male gaze. The movie is absolutely aware of this absurd wickedness.
The two main points that taken into account together change the perspective were outwards spoken in the movie. "She is mentally ill" (everybody fully knows what's going on, including the director) and "men are beasts" (they are beasts and they do this s--t and that's why we're watching these not sexy sex scenes, so that we're also aware). And also the ideas like "we can't change anything" and it's always gonna be like it. And it's terrible.
However! Despite all this Bella is the one who gets the last laugh. She outgrows them, she gets what she wants, she drives all these disgusting men (don't even get me started on how they are shown exactly like what they are: pathetic and vile) insane and comes out a winner.
Is it implied that she emancipates through "sexual liberation"? I guess. I'll admit that it's def 90% of it. Is it possible in reality? Yes. Is it shown like that's the way it should be done? No! It's freaking dirty and sad, but does it actually humiliate a woman? Hell no, because she prevails!
In general it is icky that it was all done by men, but even wearing my feminist glasses I can't hate it. Highly enjoyable. All the good things people say are 100% true. The only issue I had was just weird inconsistency with her aging process, like even in a fantasy world like that there are some implied rules and logic and they were broken. The way she would hardly be able to talk but grasped complex concepts, or hardly was able to walk but could physically perform sexual actions, that just didn't add up to me personally.
Doctor Who: The Star Beast (2023)
Big oof
Just rewatched a bunch of Doctor Who, including last Donna Noble episodes, so I could have better context
I'm mostly sad. The story is practically non-existent, can be summarised in one paragraph. The monster designs could have been cool and nostalgic and endearing but fell flat in the overall childish simplistic vibe. I know it's a children show, but it always seemed to urge children to aspire to be smarter, rather than served everything on a silver platter.
Ridiculous, lowest grade deus-ex-machina explanations and conclusions. I'll even go as far to say -forced cringe-
The nostalgia served though. Love the comeback of the characters and got too little of the chemistry I was craving and expecting to see again. Can't wait for the next episode with amazing David and Catherine.
The Watcher (2022)
Done watching grade B Netflix shows below at least 7/10
I'm not going to give anything away, but there's something I wish I knew before I watched it; the show won't give you a good enough resolution.
Such a weird decision, to take you to the finish line and then just say "actually, forget all of that, the case was never solved". I would have been perfectly happy with the writers just taking their most prominent suspect and giving us some more details on it. Would have been worth a 7.
Acting, visuals were good. Had no problem with the teasing writing and endless turns, it was enjoyable. But the lack of at least some answers and the complete disregard for everything that was fed to us made those 7 hours of my life go to waste.
You can safely skip watching this show, unless there's nothing else left to enjoy. It's one of those you forget the next morning.
Off to read about the real incident in search of more satisfaction.
The North Water (2021)
It's alright, I guess?
It's pretty hard to rate this. I feel obliged to give it a high score because of great production and superior acting, but I just can't.
There's something lacking for sure. To be fair, it's not my kind of series, I'm not a fan of historic stuff and all tough male dominated stories, but I kept watching because it definetely seemed like high quality cinema. It's absolutely not a "detective" story, do not be mislead by that. I can't really call it drama either, I couldn't really empathize with any characters, if that's fair to say regarding drama. Has Jack London vibes.
The last two episodes can absolutely be turned into one, if any; after episode three the story completely loses it's appeal. I am most definetely into slow building, but this was just a slow uncompellimg story in itself.
To sum it up, well, yeah, human nature is disgusting sometimes, it's dark, yada-yada. Do we really want to watch dark human nature without a compelling story though? Might as well have been just a movie. The 6 stars all go to the overall production, it's absolutely top-notch, and a bit to the first couple of episodes that were passable, but I honestly don't think you're missing out.
PS Have not read the book, can't compare.
The Stranger: Episode 5 (2020)
Woah
THIS plot twist!
I was literally thinking to myself "ha, these characters are really quite three-dimensional for this type of show, I can't believe how likeable and sincere this Martin guy is!" Well GUESS WHAT. Massive! I like the character writing even more now.
McMillions (2020)
Absolutely captivating
Ignore the reviews that say it's too boring or stretched out. I wish everybody could appreciate the immense human touch to the story that might have made it "too long".
Absolutely loved the deep dive into all the characters' backgrounds, a rare case of it being implemented nicely and being a great contribution to the story. Some major drama involved too that made me love it. Amazing unique people were involved and it's exciting to get to know them, every single personality, starting from FBI agents and family members and up to the lawyers who had a small part in the story and an even smaller part of screen time. PS Doug Matthews my fav documentary personality from now on.
Very, very nicely put together. Even the intro was fascinating. An enjoyable watch 100%
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Ignore the bad reviews, worth watching
I don't understand where all the bad reviews are coming from. I ignored them and did not regret. Sure, the show is a bit dragged, 3 episodes max would have been fine, but I absolutely do not see the problem with web sleuths. They add so much to the story. It was an important part of the events and it adds a different side to everything, why would anybody want to omit that? Also, the sleuths are totally not cringy or insane, they don't give off many weird vibes at all, as other reviews have mentioned.
It's not the most captivating documentary I've seen by Netflix but if you feel like watching it, it's definetely worth it, so don't get repelled by negative reviews. I bet most of those who wrote them haven't made it to the end even. The doc featured a lot of people who actually took part in the events, witnessed things, people who have something to say; the visuals are good, and the story is compelling.
