The Pact (2012)
A Nice Surprise for Horror Buffs
THE PACT is a eerie supernatural thriller that offers creepy atmosphere, a strong lead actress and a clever script to deliver an effective little horror movie that stands above the pack. An independent young woman returns to the home of her troubled youth to lay her mother to rest, only to be ensnared in a web of ghostly intrigue and murderous mystery. As clue after clue sheds light on her dark family secret, the suspense mounts and the shocks hit with a punch. Relying more on story and character interaction that explicit gore and a high body count, THE PACT is a smart film that handles familiar horror tropes in a believable way and then mixes in a few nasty surprises at the climax. It's not a perfect film, as there are a couple plot pitfalls that beg the viewer to cling willingly to suspension of disbelief, but the well-orchestrated jolts and solid acting of the cast help to elevate this flick above most other hum-drum horror clunkers.
Paparazzi (2004)
a real hoot! I dug it!
This movie actually has the balls to paint the "hero" as an "anti-hero." I've seen plenty of reviews that slam this film for being "morally bankrupt." Whatever..... This is a fast-paced and admittedly twisted little film that never leaves you bored, with a gutsy ending that I thought was really satisfying. I for one don't need to be spoon-fed the same 'white hat versus black hat' formulaic crap over and over again, and this movie puts a rare spin on the thriller genre and makes the actions of the star be just as legally and morally questionable as the "bad guys," the paparazzi. It's a fun, exploitation movie with shades of gray. Life is full of shades of gray, but that's a rare commodity in so many Hollywood features. While some people may not like that aspect of the movie, I thought it was refreshing and made me find the film much more interesting than the run-of-the-mill Hollywood formula. 8 out of 10 if you ask me.
Rituals (1977)
Great deep-woods stalker film
I thought this was a very well-acted, believable and absorbing film. It's is a crime that there is not yet a DVD release of this title. It is very similar to DELIVERANCE in many respects, but with more of a horror-movie feel. Five doctors take their annual camping trip into the thick wilderness of "The Cauldron," a huge, basin-like spot in the forest which was formed, according to Native American legend, when the moon once bumped into the earth. Things go from bad to worse to horrifying for the doctors, as they're faced with a trip through hell brought upon by an unseen, unknown stalker. If you're a horror fan, this is a forgotten gem. Highly recommended for fans of backwoods slashers.
